Such a great song. The entirety of White Ladder was the soundtrack of my life in 1999, splitting up with a girlfriend after a long relationship and moving to a different county and being alone. I played White Ladder in the car, in the house constantly and I still play it now. Thanks for the music and all of these little lessons you are giving.
Hi David Gray, my father and I saw you play this song on late night TV years and years ago. It felt like we were both hearing a new favorite song for the first time, and that's a rare moment of connection between any humans, let alone a father and son. Anyways, I just scored a decent console electric piano and this was the first song I set as a goal for myself. I was quite pleased to find this. Hope you are well, and thank you for your gifts to the world.
White Ladder is one of my all time favorite albums. Every time I’m feeling down, it’s my go to comfort music. Thank you, David. These lessons mean so much to this mediocre little musician. 🥰
Brilliant series of lessons and such a great down to earth guy. Thanks David 👍😀 I'm another one who used to play White Ladder album constantly and still listen regularly. 😊 Another big favourite is Lost Songs.
I love these videos. Please keep it going! White Ladder is a masterpiece, but does anyone else think “Draw the Line” is the most under-appreciated album ever?? Hint hint...
I play C Em/B Am G/B for the verses, and F F C G F F for the choruses. That C, B, A, B pattern on the root is very distinctive, so I think it's important to accent it if your strum/pick skills are up to it. I played this song hundreds of times in my younger days, and no one ever complained about it. Just play along to the original recording, and you'll have it in no time.
If you wish to be more accurate than my version, you could scan down to "American Composer's" comment. Just take his chords and move them all down a half-step (to the key of C). I'll probably be giving that Sus and those other funky chords a try some time. But I can vouch for my version as effective, if not entirely accurate: I was understating things when I said "no one ever complained!" ;)
Last comment: whether you try it my way or with the extended chords, I really think the bass notes are super important, so try to get them to follow that C, B, A, B pattern if you can.
@@visitur4914 Thanks for the shout out! For a pretty faithful reproduction of the song on guitar, use capo 1 and play these chords: C(9): x32030 Em7: 022030 (you could do 020000, but the other one is a better voicing) Am11: x02530 (if that's too hard, you can play regular Am7 x02010 or A7sus x02040 instead) Em7 F: 133211 C: x032010 Gsus: 3x0013 Have fun!
Thank you for this song and tutorial, David. This is the defining song of my marriage and I am learning it so that I might play and sing it to my wife at a significant anniversary sometime in our future.
Thanks man.. really appreciate you doing this, as it nice to see people play from the heart and soul...I use to think that just because I didn't know my music theory as much as I just love to play I was not gonna be able to make great Music.. but then after years of being inspired from artist like you . You made be understand that aslong as you can play from the soul and it feels/ sounds good what you play then the rest is secondary. It's being able to hear and feel the music means so much more. 😎✌🏼
I just love you, anyway... and after 31 years from my purchase of "A Century Ends", in vinyl, i am here today since i want to learn how to sing this song I just love you all the way, big hug! I am not going to ask you about the Waiting for Deffo thing, I promise :)
Would anyone be kind enough to list the chords hes using here as i cant find them anywhere. Or even better do a slower tutorial 😊😊. Absolutely love David . Ive seen him live 12 times now and will continue to every time he visits ireland.
So I've had it right all these years if not for a transposing during recording lol I have the recorded version basically then not the intended key. Can sort that out
Love the way you play great sounding chords, but don't know what they are called, and in fact, don't even care. Exactly how I play guitar. If it sounds great to me, and i can play it, I don't give a sh*t what the chord is called, I can transcribe it to TAB if I need to write it down.
What a lovely man.
100%

It's mad how easy music and specifically albums or songs can do that. They're like a time travel device
@Beat Orphan it was the reverse bongos
@Beat Orphan well, this is it
David, you’re one my favorite artists of all time, and you’re blushing about your “lack of music terminology”? You’re aces, mate.
Love Him💖
I listened to this song for 5 hours straight coming from Bend Oregon to my home one nice summer day. Thanks

"No barking dogs in this one...
Quiet please!" 😅🤣😂
I love this whole series. ❤️
This was my first song of yours I heard. I fell in love.

My favourite song from this album has to be Sail Away. Beautiful. Thanks for posting this video, David.
DAVE: Could you kindly post an arrangement of an acoustic guitar version of this? Thank you.
That's what i was looking for.
I play C Em Am G in a strum that goes D UUU D. Would like to see David doing this on guitar only.

This is awesome David. Thank you so much. Would you ever consider doing a run down of the equipment in your studio, the preamps etc?
I just love you, anyway... and after 31 years from my purchase of "A Century Ends", in vinyl, i am here today since i want to learn how to sing this song
I just love you all the way, big hug! I am not going to ask you about the Waiting for Deffo thing, I promise :)
I think David has just been "sussed" - by himself!

He's some boyo o tell yea.
01:22 _But it was correct to call it_ «sus» 🙂 _(being a beautiful suspended fourth!)_
Yeah, sis when it replaces the third 😉
Angus Robins _in fact, in this case it replaces and then resolves to the third major_
Thanks for posting this Mr Gray but it's not clear what notes to play.
david u are antimainstream i like ur faith
