WOW, When i looked up "sail away with me on guitar " I was never expecting David to be giving the lesson. Amazing. Such a beautiful song. I walked down the aisle to this song. Thank you David for your music.
Am I really getting to text David gray. I lost my son 3 years ago. And most of my best memories are of him singing in his room along to your songs and me standing outside his door listening. Thanks David for the music
Annmarie Ohara a man around my area was stabbed by his own brother and killed. The bloke was known to sing “Babylon” in the pub. My aunt sent a letter to David Gray telling him about the bloke and David actually wrote back with a heartfelt response.
A great memory one of my friends and I have, sat on the grass on a warm sunny day, beer in hand, enjoying a smoke, listening to you on the Other Stage at Glasto. We often reminisce about that moment in time where there is no place we would rather be, just absolute bliss!
These videos are a pure gift. Doesn’t the guitar sound amazing ? I wonder what strings he’s using. Just brilliant. Comes across as an extremely humble guy.
Thank You David !! what a lovely surprise and a real privilege to get a really sound lesson from the man himself !! ... How can 27 folk NOT like this ????? They have zero taste !! .....
Always likes your hits, but when Wife took me to your show in Denver a couple of summer's ago, I was hooked, one of the best concerts ever...and those hardcore fans there that night, showed their love. What a tight band you have. Thanks...I'll learn a few of these songs for her.
David,as a fellow musician,I must commend you. Thank you for bringing your beautiful music free to UA-cam. Not only do you write such fantastic songs but now you come onto UA-cam with an acoustic guitar showing people how to play them. What a sound guy is David..God bless
David I love you, My mum got the white ladder album for me when I was 14 and I still play it to this day (I'm 33 now) You're the reason why I play guitar! Thank you for everything :)
How does anyone give a thumbs down to David Gray? Especially when he has taken the time out to teach us!! Classic song that never gets old!! Thank you for this.
Quite apart from the usefulness of a very clear tutorial, I was quite moved by this video. I've been listening to your very poignant music for many years and play a few of your songs in an approximate fashion on guitar. This is the first time I've stumbled across you explaining how you play one. Sail Away takes me back to my 20s and the life and love I had then was very different. But your songs stay the course and travel along with us as faithful companions somehow. Great to see you in fine fettle and thanks for a great vid 👍
Been living in a cave and had no idea who DG was. Stumbled on this tutorial and as it progressed, was thinking "wow this guy can sing." 😂 Found live performance of song and was blown away. Talk about a master class. Thank you!!
Spent 3 hours with Mr. Gray at the Orpheum Theatre ( third row center ) a couple of weeks ago in Phoenix. Very fortunate to be the first ( my wife actually, I was photographer ) to greet him as he exited the stage door headed to his bus. He spent a few minutes talking with us and signing a copy of his Anniversary Edition White Ladder. Our fourth time we have seen him live. After a short break in the concert, he came out ( all in white ) and played Tainted Love - Soft Cell and brought the house down! The first time I had ever heard him cover a song ( except of course Say Hello Wave Goodbye ). Then followed 3 David Bowie songs ( my wife’s favorite in her youth )White Ladder is our favorite CD of all time and Sail Away is my favorite D.G. Song. What a night! What memories…. Thank you David Gray. Now I’m currently learning to play Sail Away and somehow I missed this video until now…. 8 years until 30th anniversary White Ladder tour?
This song has been one of my favorites for many years now. It means a lot to me. I keep coming back to it, feeling and singing along with you. Thank you so much for creating it, David.
I used my Yamahas FG-150 that I bought in 1972 which is a very good copy of your Martin, to play along with this video. Once I heard 'Babylon' and saw Mr Gray at Glastonbury, when I think he replaced someone who had withdrawn, my wife and I spent many happy Summer evenings (and others) listening to White Ladder. Never imagined that I would be able to be taught any of those songs by the man himself. Thank you so much
I play most of these With a Martin 000-X2E About $650 and has the same sound and seems to be the David's Guitar minus the DG Custom stuff on his custom model line that runs thousands of dollars up the bill
Absoloutly bloody wonderful David. Always loved your music since the days of white ladder. But now I am 3 years into playing guitar and I have you teaching me one of your songs.... Well life is just solo fine.. Love it.
I woke up with this song in my head after not hearing it for years. So I decided to look up the tab. Then I saw a video tutorial and thought that I'd much prefer that than ultimate guitar. After a couple of minutes I thought this guy even bobs his head like David Gray. It took me a while to realise that it was actually him. This is by far the coolest guitar tutorial I've ever stumbled across. Thank you so much David.
I think this man is a fantastic artist. I'm not sure I can say underrated as such, but when you consider some of the other so called "artists" out there now with millions of subscribers, I guess he is. Brilliant, unique voice, excellent songwriting, strong guitar. I came across him by accident many years ago and still play his albums regularly. Decided I sound best when I'm in the shower...my poor neighbours.
I'm thrilled to discover you've done some tutorials for your songs. They're beautiful. I can't wait to try my hand at the way they're supposed to be played. Saw your show at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley last Friday (7/29/22). Brilliant. I can still feel the good energy I took from it days later. Thank you!
Anybody else get to the end of the video and realise you didn’t take any of the instruction in because you were in shock and disbelief that it was the man himself! This has got to be the coolest guitar tutorial I’ve ever seen!! Top man for doing this 👍
great stuff david gray. so unselfish to do this.. and I love how david proves he is human by struggling at one stage to hit the high notes... hope for us all!!!
Saw you many years ago at V festival and I must admit, I was amazed at your stage presence and how you filled the souls of 80,000 people that day, nice to see you 👍
I've been playing this ok for so long but at the same time I've missed those lovely intonations. Back to practice and get it right from now on. Thank you DG.
Thanks David! I fell in love with this album when it came out in ‘98 and still listen to it to this day. So many memories that these songs are tied to. Please keep the tutorials coming! Would love one for every song on the album. Especially Babylon. Cheers.
Oh My This Is Amazing! I love this (White Ladder) whole album to it’s core....to see you teach these phenomenal songs is something so special. Thank You! 10000x
You've heard it from the man... 👍 Only a handful of celeb guitarist song writers treat us bedroom guitarist's every now and then. Authentic original Christmas gift for us ☺ Merry Christmas
Man, i thought i had learnt that song long long ago. Now i see David playing it i realise it is nothing like he ACTUALLY plays it. Best of all, and quite surprising he gave the proper cave man description.."pinky on 8th frt on 3rd".....absolutely love ya for this David...i am now going to your song properly...Peace brother.
Wow. I remember sitting in a dirty factory office, after hours, working alone and far from home. Listened to ‘Lost Songs’ and cried wondering what the fuck I was doing with my life. That moment brought me closer to realising what was important. Thanks David for the music.
The very fact that you have shared the song's secrets on this humble video is very endearing - no doubt will lead to an even more loyal fan base, who can share your music in a much more engaged way than by just listening. Its a beautiful song. Gonna be a while before my thumb can wrap like that though :-) Respect brother
Something so very special about a person like David , it shines out whenever they take the time and have the understanding that others will benefit so much from a personal tutorial. What an absolutely lovely thing to do, showing others exactly how you play this song will make a difference to a lot of people. Many thanks David , such a lovely thing to do. 🌌💕🌠
Amazing David. Love your music and always wanted to learn how to play the songs in White Ladder. I echo the plaudits below. To have the privilege of your tuition is simply wonderful. Thank you. Thank you.
Wow. Thank you for making these tutorial videos! Getting a lesson from the main man himself is just an incredible gift.
How can someone so famous and accomplished also be so approachable and down to earth? David is an amazing soul..
So sorry for your loss :-( must be bitter sweet listening to to songs like this..
I’m so sorry for your loss. My Heart goes out to you, ...
Annmarie Ohara a man around my area was stabbed by his own brother and killed. The bloke was known to sing “Babylon” in the pub. My aunt sent a letter to David Gray telling him about the bloke and David actually wrote back with a heartfelt response.
Thanks for that much appreciated
@@Womble1252 thanks for your reply yeah it is heartbreaking I'm keeping my chin up
What a treat to see the actual artist give the lesson. What a great song, to boot. Thank you, DG!
Best thing with this is you won't get someone coming on saying its not played like that.
Hahaha you clearly have never played a gig. 100% there will be some one telling you “that was the wrong chord in the chorus”
@@michaelpietrangelo664 You're right as the reply above proves lol.
@@michaelwood3099 Hahahahah!
Oh yeah?
Oh there will be
Love the fact that it’s actual David Gray teaching this. Amazing ❤

Stunning piece of songwriting topped off by the artist giving us a personal lesson...respect and love for DG
These videos are a pure gift. Doesn’t the guitar sound amazing ? I wonder what strings he’s using. Just brilliant. Comes across as an extremely humble guy.
I can't believe its been over 20 years. Fond memories of first hearing this great song. Thanks, David!
David thank you so very much. What a special performer to show us how you played your song. Wonderful.
Thank You David !! what a lovely surprise and a real privilege to get a really sound lesson from the man himself !! ... How can 27 folk NOT like this ????? They have zero taste !! .....
Great to see the actual songwriter being kind enough to give his time to explain how to play it. Much respect David.
A truly magnificent album. helped me through some pretty tough times.
Thank you David.
Massively! under-rated singer, song writer.
It is an absolute privilege to be able to listen to such a great musician. To be taught to play, by the man himself, truly awesome...
Legend!
Oh sail away . My favourite love song ever. My late husband and I would listen to this together. Thank you 😍
If that’s not sharing the music I don’t know what is!!! What a gift for the artist of such an amazing hit to share this!!
Always likes your hits, but when Wife took me to your show in Denver a couple of summer's ago, I was hooked, one of the best concerts ever...and those hardcore fans there that night, showed their love. What a tight band you have. Thanks...I'll learn a few of these songs for her.
Love how it's actually him doing the lesson. White Ladder means so much to me it was a huge part of my teenage years. What a talented songwriter he is
David,as a fellow musician,I must commend you. Thank you for bringing your beautiful music free to UA-cam.
Not only do you write such fantastic songs but now you come onto UA-cam with an acoustic guitar showing people how to play them.

This series of instructional videos on White Ladder is killing my productivity today. KILLING IT. I'm all day with this.
David I love you,
My mum got the white ladder album for me when I was 14 and I still play it to this day (I'm 33 now)
You're the reason why I play guitar!
Thank you for everything :)
Amazing how things come together in this universe. :) I love it!
God bless you, your mum and David Gray.
How does anyone give a thumbs down to David Gray? Especially when he has taken the time out to teach us!! Classic song that never gets old!! Thank you for this.
steve mecc fair comment but you realise he’s re released that album? So not really taking time out....more like a job of work

I love you David!! I can't wait to see you play in Wellington, NZ. X Thank you for White Ladder - an album that has spoken to me for many years.
Remember when this song came out, it had a big impact on me. Absolutely love this song.

An artist who happens to be a popular person. That voice! Great guitar playing.

Just got back from White Ladder tour Bournmouth, headed as fast as I could to my guitar - this is amazing!

Amazing. Dude is a genius and artist and a gentleman. All at once. Love him.
Always loved this song but didn't have a Scooby about the chords, so cool to see you laying them out, I wish more artists would do this.
Marvelous. Wonderful. Superb. Thank you for this series of beautiful lessons. Possibly my best ever discovery on UA-cam.
David Gray, one of the music industry's true gentlemen
David has got it all the way.. great and fantastic musician song writer.
Fantastic. What better way to make sure your song is played correctly than to teach it yourself. Thank you sir.
Every artist should do this.
I hope this is the start of more uploads............thanks David and all the gang.
thank you sharing all your gifts all these years!

Where else would you get a personal intimate lesson from the actual artist. Man David your voice is still so amazing as well is this song.
Incredibly beautiful song.
To notch. Don’t know how many artists would show their tricks. Best way to get your tunes played. Respect. Now a classic.
