  • Water was not heating in the washing machine so replaced the heating element in an Indesit IWE81481 washing machine.
    Not changed the element on one of these machines before. All went well until it came time to take the element out, took a lot of persuading to get it out. Once out pretty straight forward.
    Any questions let me know and I will help if I can.
    I got the element from here;
    rover.ebay.com/...
    This one on Amazon looks exactly the same : amzn.to/2nXFq7U
    For anyone interested the tools I used for this job were;
    Wera Tool check - I have the older on but this is a great set to have and will help you get through most jobs
    amzn.to/2mmjrHh
    Draper Multimeter: Nothing fancy does what I need it to do at a reasonable cost. Had mine for about 6 years now and still working.
    amzn.to/2nUXZco
    Pliers - I think they stopped making the pliers I have about 30 years ago but these ones are bery similar and would be equally useful;
    amzn.to/2nfhVWG
    Facom Automatic Multi-Grip Pliers : I have the older type and have had them for more than 10 years and no sign of giving up. Expensive but a fantastic tool to have for general plumbing.

    This is excellent video. I couldn't pull out my heater but I managed to cut excess rubber with long peace of scalpel and then pull out somehow. My heater was measuring 30 ohms but it was deformed and caused sparking at contact and damage to electronics. One line was completely burned out and caused door interlock failure (not locking), but that was easy to fix by soldering wire and making bridge. it is smart do service this machine every 3-5 years by renewing heater and dorlock.

    Just done this for the first time ever and can give a MASSIVE improvement on how to get the old element out. The clamp on the inside of the machine at the rubber seal moves down the element as you pull it out. The improvement is pull it forward enough that you then push it back so the bolt pushes completely back through the rubber seal leaving the hole empty. That removes a lot of the compression on the seal and allows it to be pried out far, far easier. As long as there isnt too much limescale to stop the bracket moving down the element its quite easy. I worked this out after over an hour of struggling to get it out.
    EDIT: I also pulled out the temperature sensor which you need to move to the new element anyway.

    Mine was also a pain to get out. Without videos like this I might have been hesitant to persist. Taking the nut completely off was necessary to get reasonable purchase on the rubber seal. I put the machine on its front on some cushions and squirted some washing up liquid round the top of the rubber to lubricate. Thanks HCG 😀

      @@handymancraftglasgow My problem was the RCB cutting off the electricity in the house rather than no heating. The replacement element has just gone in. (No thanks to Royal Mail "24 hour" delivery service.) A test wash showed no leaks, electrical or water.

    I found a way.. sheer persistence! And a stubby flat-bladed screwdriver. Also took ages pulling the seal out, found that using long-nosed pliers to pull the seal out helped.

    The heater element on my Hotpoint Aquarius is fine, but the seal failed and water poured onto the floor, tried leadmate, silicone and last resort Stixall to cure the leak but no success. So have spent £25.99 on a new element tonight. Don't waste time folks if they seal fail, just buy a new element and save time mopping up, and starting again. Also, quite a few videos don't detail tightenting up. This one is quite clear to be fair. I have seen one where a guy says "just hand tight and then one turn and another where a guy winds the nut up with a cordless screwdriver!

      If you have a multi meter you can check if element is working. Make sure its wired up correctly - the wires are attached.

    try pushing it all the way in and the pry out one side first. this is how I was able to get it out. take care not to use leverage on the plastic case as you might crack it and you're done

  • @mm1979dk
    @mm1979dk Рік тому

    5:41 You are not supposed to unscrew that nut all the way!! That is why you lost the rubber with the bolt and had difficulties extracting it.
    Some heating elements come with the last bit of screw thread broken, so that the nut would not unscrew all the way.

    • @handymancraftglasgow

      The rubber was pretty much welded in. Doing this gave me a bit of play to break the seal and a little more purchase for getting the rubber out.

    Hi there! I replaced one of these and I didn't see any bracket inside the tub that is supposed to hold the front of the element in place, it was very very hard to remove the old element. Is it possible I broke the bracket removing the old element? But I shaked the machined and I Cant hear a broken bracket or anything rattling around inside. Thanks

    Just a question did it start leaking afterwards? Because it looks like you’ve over tighten it

    • @handymancraftglasgow
      @handymancraftglasgow  6 років тому

      No leaks. Pretty hard to over tighten with that tiny ratchet. You just want it tight enough to compress the rubber to give a good seal.
      Equally you don't want it too loose or you will get leaks and have to pull out your machine again.

    How did you get it from being flush against the drum at 5m8s then next time we see it at 5m40s the element is about an inch away from the drum? this is the tricky part (I've spent an hour trying to pull the element away from the drum and it's only budged by about a tenth of the distance you've managed.) Any tips?

    • @handymancraftglasgow
      @handymancraftglasgow  6 років тому +1

      You are right this is the tricky part. The problem is that the rubber almost welds itself to the plastic. What you have to do is break that seal without breaking the plastic.
      So what had happened was I had managed to lever the metal off so the actual old element was coming through the rubber and gave me access to the rubber seal and even with this access it still took a bit of getting out.
      You should be able to do this with a decent size flat head screwdriver, just be vert careful with what you lever against and try to spread the load to try and protect the drum housing.
      It took me a long time to do this but once you break that seal the whole lot just pops out. Just takes time but it will come out.
