LYRICS
Tell your friends not to think aloud
Until they swallow
Whisper things into my brain
Your voice sounds so hollow
I am not a leader of men
Since I prefer to follow
Do you think I could have a drink
Since it's so hard to swallow
So hard to swallow
So turn the television off
and I will sing a song
And if you suddenly have the urge
You can sing along
I touch your hand, I touch your face
I think the fruit is rotten
Give me lessons on how to breathe
'cause I think I've forgotten
I think I've forgotten
One day, up to a cliff
That overlooks the water
I jumped in to save a girl
It was somebody's daughter
And now the ring that's on my hand
It was given to me by her
And to this day we all sit around
And dream of ways to get higher
To get much higher
who's listening to this banger in 2024 ?
Me
Too
I saw them at the Usana Amplitheatre years ago!
They were awesome!
❤❤❤❤❤
🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Don't understand the hate of Nickelback... I think it's more people just doing it because it's trendy cause this song is freaking awesome.
They have become more generic and formulaic after All The Right Reasons. I don't think they deserve the hate they get though. That being said, their first 2-3 were good, especially The State.
Comparing this style against anything in their last few albums is why the hate exists. I used to proudly declare Nickelback was my favorite band, even in a sea of hate. Today, I can’t defend them, nor do I keep up with their work. Their newer, modern, radio-friendly, cookie cutter, copy-and-paste jobs dont hold a flame to their older, post-grunge angst and emotional songs of yesteryear's work.
Everyone hates them, but somehow they sell records. Strange indeed. Always but an unashamedly fan.
P.s. pretty sure in an interview they spoke of how this song was either written on boomers, or about being on boomers. Can't recall which.
Some genuine dislike, some just copying others, some scared to have their own opinion and disagree with the consensus.
@@nthomas87 You put it perfectly. Their first album, The State was real rock. Everything else put out is bitch rock. The same goes for Creed. Their first album, My Own Prison, was perfect. Everything after that is once again, bitch rock.
The best nickleback song out there.
thats really sad lol
Definitely!
You got that right...
There are several off this album that are far better than their later, more commercial stuff. Most notably, this one, Worthy to Say and Breathe.
great song.
Post grunge Nickelback is the best Nickelback
Fight me.
Isn't all Nickelback post grunge? I guess you mean that they've softened up compared to their early days when they actually knew how to rock hard.
danman6669 **eye twitches**
*hell yea, man*
Your No.1 with that one No.5
Your not wrong
One of the best songs ever. It doesn't matter what fragile egos and groups think.
I wouldn’t go that far, but it’s pretty good. Nickelback on their first two albums were fantastic. “The Long Road” was also pretty great.
@@yaboi2500Yeah, before they started writing frat boy rock songs
@@unclephil3902 can u please explain what a frat boy rock song is lolol
@@unclephil3902 im getting deftone vibes from this song ngl😭 idk if thats frat boy rock or if u mean like, nickelback saw it, thought itd be cool and did it if thats wha u mean lol
@@unclephil3902 Chad Kroeger became happier. So what?
I don't like Nickleback, but there is no denying THIS is an absolutely spectacular song. Top notch!
I agree this whole album is great and silver side up is good too
you should like nickelback
They do have a few good ones.
And why you don't like nickleback .Reason please
@@machoman1139 why should he
This was the first nickelback song i ever heard. It just resonates deeper than the rest for me
How many people listening to this song 2024?😊
This whole album was awesome. Post grunge but new sounding. Regardless of how you feel about this band, it healed the wounds of the loss of Cobain and made us love rock n roll again
Nailed it...
... this single came out like 6 years after Kurt passed. There were plenty more bands who helped with the transition much sooner and better
Others did it much sooner and much better. Yep. Nailed it haha
actually i think i read an article once that kurt had a time machine and he went into the future and saw what terrible bands were going to exist so he decide to end it all. he was really ahead of his time on that one ha ha ha
@@amasterofbation Dude... c'mon, be real...
*Kurt could've just used his time machine to keep those bands from existing*
I have listened to Nickelback for over 25 years
I don't care what anyone says, I LOVE NICKELBACK!
This was the first song I heard by them. And its still there best pure rock song
Their only one
@@seangarner2687 You clearly haven't heard all of their first three albums
Same here. I always thought it was called Hard to Swallow!
*their
And also, definitely not their best pure rock song. You’re taste is dog shit at least
Still the best NB song
Always will be. My anthem since 2001.
the only one thats not cringy,,,
@@zero..the..hero. The State is their only album I will listen to. They should have followed their rock roots vs their money grabbing issues.
I was 18 years old and a stripper danced to this song. Manhood hit me that night
I'm on vacation in tokyo. Laying in bed. Thinking, what's that one nickelback song i like? I went through about 17 songs and thought that's a great song, but it's not it.. 17 songs.. they were all great. Then i saw this one and said YES!!!!!!!! THIS IS IT.
maybe I'll sing it at Karaoke. Ha ha
these old nickelback songs were crazy good, songs like this and breathe I think was one of the other ones...back when they were really good in the beginning
Exactly
I agree
Epic voices and rock that sound...epic
Still Jammin NB in 2024 💪🏼
Here with you brother !!!!!
Always❤
No other Nickelback song can beat this! Their best so far!
Nickelback has always slapped!! There i said it!!
This is my favorite song from them, even though it did not hit #1. Something about the harmony and how it goes from slow to really fast.
I love this song, and not the least be ashamed to admit it.
I bought the cd as soon as I heard it. And still own it.
I think he made this song about his fbi agent. Or when he was channeling his inner female sigma. I wonder if they read these things 🤔. These bands must hate me 🤗
I'm not a Nickelback hater...altho I'll admit I'm not a big fan of them, I don't trash them...just not my cup of tea most of the time...to each his own...but THIS song is simply incredible imho...I remember hearing this when it came out & I still love it today. Like another commenter said you just can't deny how good & well written it is.
I just find it really impressive how these bands from "our time" got famous without help from youtube or facebook to share their music. It was purely radio and word of mouth. I wonder if musicians now are making more money, or if it's still amounting to the same, because of the costs of things and value of the dollar? Like this video only has 9,000 views, but we know nickleback is still rich.
What the fuck happened?! This is so good.
Charm wore off.
With early albums, bands have much less money to produce and you get more creative recording and writing techniques.
Once the money comes in, they can afford more equipment to experiment with sounds and that usually takes away from the actual song writing
Still is an absolute fantastic song. It’s like seether’s fine again. No one can say
My favorite song (fine again). Need more songs like em
Never understood why there are so many Nickleback haters. Saw them in concert last summer and they rocked. This is their best song!
Cos they suck
They wrote Rockstar and just getting writing it again and again, that's probably why
the first three nickelback songs hit like a hammer, and had songs like this, figured you out, and how you remind me that came off their second, third and fourth albums that we're awesome. then basically they pulled a metallica and went super mainstream and started sucking.
@@jedismasher If they would’ve stuck with what they were doing on “The Long Road”, they could’ve had artistic vision *and* a commercial product.
They’re still awesome!! It’s called evolving. Haters are ignorant.
i feel like a lot of ppl don't even know about this album
Netflix Doc brought me here. And made me realize the only reason NB was hated is because they became the Martyr of rock music. Grunge Music was done, Rock was fading and the new music was pop, electro, Hip-hop. And while I respect all those genres, the public decided heavy Rock was done, and decided to use Nickelback as the group to hate, because they were the band loved most. Their music was amazing, and still is. It was unfair why their downfall was the way it was, it could have been any other band if they were #1 at the time... But hey, I'm glad to see their comeback now.
The State was my introduction to Nickelback and I'll forever cherish this album.
Nothing groundbreaking, but how many groundbreaking artists can there really be? I can say for sure that Nickelback (surprise surprise) is not without talent. Solid track.
Love nickelback majority of their songs are good and still very heavy today
This is a great song, it was like almost forgotten bc it was such an early song
Many years ago I heard this on the radio very late one night but couldn't find out who it was. About 5 or 6 years later I stumbled across it again and it was even more bad ass than I remembered! These guys put out some really fine music early on but for some reason got a reputation that they really don't deserve.
I went through the same thing with a Massive Attack song called Protection. I heard it late one night and spent ten years looking for it. When I found it I played it constantly.
One of my all-time favorite songs that they made
I believe this song is about the pitfalls of social media. I am not a leader of men because I spend so much time following other people on social media. I'm not living my own life.
ummmm when this song was released there was no social media...
Do you guys openly admit to be nickel back fans?? I fucking loved them since day one. This is the song that I was introduced to them for the first time
The lyrics are an amalgam of experiences frontman Chad Kroeger has had. He describes what it’s like being on magic mushrooms, but also one time when he had to save a friend from drowning.
İ love nickleback.... Wish they would do a 2000 throwback style album again with no ballads though.. As much as I love a nickleback ballad, I want to hear that country style rock and roll again. 😉🤘
This is the first song I heard by nickleback and I was floored
LISTEN! THIS IS IN MY TOP 3! I’m sorry I didn’t comment when I originally found it but it must’ve been damn near 5 or 6 years ago
This deserves more views than most of their mainstream material since 2001. This to me is way better than most of their break-up anthems or their wannabe a rockstar someday songs.
By far their best song.
The only Nickelback song i like.
Same
The whole Dark horse album was a masterpiece; i mean sure I don’t like all their songs. But compared to dark horse, this song is mediocre
I love this song because it doesn't sound like the most popular Nickleback songs
I think he was talking about his fbi agent. That or he was channeling his inner female sigma personality type or something
I"m old enough to be their mother. Old school musicians. Hooked me. So talented. Fantasy is to see them live at least once.
Yeah my mother liked them too. They found their audience I guess.
They're touring USA 2023
how can you dislike anything made by nickelback... c'mon jesus sings in this band and it has a voice of a true god
easily their best song, it's not even close.
like. it's just not a close call.
Such a powerful song! Just remembered this banger ❤️
What a video,what a song,what a BAND!!!!
Soon as the heavy guitar happens at 1:42 I get instant chills
Music chills are the fucking best
That's the time when you crank it as loud as the stereo will go and just break shit!!
This Song Years Later HELPED me appreciate their Name in Music, this a song that used to Drink to very Often.. crazy thing is our thoughts are not personal anymore.
1st Nickelback song I heard in the USA
This Is The ONLY Nickelback Song I ACTUALLY Like.
& The Only One I'll Admit To.
Same here!!! They should reperform this song.
Play this album through once, you'll find a few more I bet
This song is the best out of all Nickleback songs
Never understood the hate towards Nickelback. I have an eclectic music appreciation, and Nickelback has some great songs. Figured you out would be my second fav after Leader of Men
The first song that I heard from Nickelback
This song is their pinnacle!! Never gets old.
Killer song yes a black man said that!!!
Yo man, I dig those cats myself.
Much love brother. I had a good friend in high school that loved green day. I had to burn my dookie CD twice for him. Yes he was black. Lol. Look up seven dust
I used to drive cabs and one the black guys I took to work was getting into my Chevelle album pretty good. I wish I was more impressed but I've always liked thug rap despite being big metal head. I don't care what anybody thinks. I'll listen to either, and love it all. Fuck the dumb shit.
Me too!!
oh wait nevermind
Doesn't matter what your color, ethnicity, gender, etc... If you like the song, that's awesome.
I dont know, but this song take me to a past that I never live before , something nostalgic, I dont know. I'm only 31. I knew this song only in 2018. Its crazy. Today It's one of my favorite Nickelback song.🇧🇷
I can’t believe I am only watching the video for the first time!! This is one of my fav Nickelback songs!
This is the Nickelback I remember. Where is the old Nickelback now? :/
Ana Kulić back with a new hit, that's where
Dimitri Michael lol right. if they continue the path of how their new song is they will have a comeback.
They grew as a band and their sound matured, that's what happens with band as they get older.
all you nickelback lovers are right they are epic and always will be!!!
First two CD's ROCKED! They got too soft for me after that.
I love the table flip!
First song I heard from Nickelback, and its my favorite!
My 1st Nickelback song too 😅
My buddy and I listened to this album together in the early 2000’s together in high school. Love these guys
Good ole days were you’d get pumped to buy a new CD and go cruising around
This is the song that got me to like nickelback when it came out
This song kicks serious ass
My favorite Nickelback song by far.
Brilliant song .. Grunge sound really works for them
I puzzled by the lower view counts on early Nickelback songs
If only Nickleback stuck with this kinda jam. I strongly dislike this band, but goddammit this song kicks ass! Wannabe a Rockstar ain't so bad either.
The State and Curb are my personally favorite Nickelback albums🤘
Personally, their best song and my favorite of theirs.
This is the song that hooked me
In days like that, we don't need a chosen one, but a superior one. Not just a king of mankind, but a leader of mankind.
This is their best song by far!
I got to say Early Nickelback was pretty good, lot of memories to this ONe.
I Remember Seeing Nickelback Opening For CREED In Edmonton, Canada, 6 Mths Later They Exploded With How You....Well I'm Sure You Know, Let The Haters Hate But Nickelback ROCKS!, Alberta Boys!, Always \m/\m/
Omg such a great tune🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
This is not their first record, only the first record that hit america. They had another record before this called curb. It was originally released and only available in canada but soon was rereleased in america when nickelback hit it big with silver side up and the long road. The curb is a terrific album and had a music video of the song fly (should be a vid on youtube somewhere). It was originally released in 1996. If you like the state and silver side up I definitely advise to check out the curb.
curb is my third favourite nickelback album, the state is by far their best grunge album...their more recent records are more hard rock
Nickelback's origins trace back when it was a cover band covering nirvana songs. But when they released the curb and the state they are considered post grunge band, that eventually turned into a pop/rock band over time....especially with their most recent record no fixed address. But I see what you mean it sounds very much like grunge. I pefer the curb myself but the state was a great record as well. Very overlooked in their discography since they hit it big in america.
Have you heard their first self-made record Hesher? it's really raw...I myself prefer Curb as it is the first majorly good grunge album the guys did and it's all self inspired music that they made and most of it's about their experiences as a new band in a small town in canada with nothing much happening but negative stuff
Yes I have heard the hesher ep. Very rough demos. That when polished became good songs on curb. From my understanding chad wasn't a fan of the hesher ep from a statement he made a long time ago.
Pitchfork Matt Curb was legit. And the State. I never understood the major joke/hate on the band. And I’m pretty picky musically. But I can see not liking it. But hating on it. I mean listening to whiny blink182. Ehhhh not for me. But I won’t hate on people for liking it.
I really MISS Chad Kroeger's hair in this video. Grunge is NOT dead!!!
I really wish he would grow it back. It kind of made Chad himself.
@@ky6517 ; I agree!!!
I like the song and Grunge is my favorite music....but this is definitely not Grunge....
@@corryburton2660; I totally was joking! It's more like hard rock. I don't know why they used to categoize having long hair as "grunge"?
He looks good with both short and long on him.
But yes
LOVED his long hair. Help him who he is with the band
They took some heat latter...but their roots are in pure rock. Hate on Chad if you want, he's a bona fide rockstar...
Nickelback haters just can’t handle this level of rock 🤟🏼
Anybody in 2019? Still love the old! The original
💯
The only Nickelback I like and I love it.
Still a legit song in 2023. I was fan for this album and then backed out. Still don’t get the hate they get though. If you don’t like it don’t listen.
I agree with an earlier comment from some dude, they did sell out to corporate industry........can you blame them? Money and fame........hmmmm..........tough decision..... But, thanks to modern technology, I can listen to this song over and over to remind me how good these boys really are. Cheers...
corbrashi nah bud I think people don't like them because they use similar tunes and rythms but I like it
honestly at one time I could compare them to foo fighters...
I think they sold out, the devil got them, signed in blood lololololol.
I LOVE Nickelback~ this was my first album at 7 or 8 years old, and I became a lifelong Nickelback fan! Of course,
" Silver Side Album" catapulted them to fame, and was a departure from their previous " grunge" sound here... "All the Right Reasons" was around the time they fired drummer Mike Vikedal, and after that I was so mad I stopped listening. So I really haven't heard their "new" stuff. But I will always go back to this song, and " How You Remind me" ...
Daniel Adair is a better drummer than Vikedal. But in fact, in the beginning they were groundbreaking, and I say that being a fan of almost all their albums( No Fixed Address is shit only in my opinion)
My favorite album of theirs is Long Road and a few songs from Silver Side. But I’d have to agree their earliest stuff is objectively better. But anything after the Long Road album I just can’t stand to listen to anymore since I’ve heard them all a million times from the radio lol.
Ya. I love Nickleback. Always have always will. You'll just have to make up your own mind for yourself.
My best friend and I were 90’s teens. Growing up, I liked country music, he liked alternative rock. He introduced me to this song, Cumbersome, Champagne Supernova, a lot of the good ones.
I remember hearing some of their more chill songs and I was like “Yeah whatever” being a Metallica fan I was fully into heavy and loud, and then when my mum chucked this on I fell in love, even if I’m in the mood I’ll listen to their more mellow calm songs
Best Nickelback song ever!!!!
The only nickleback song I like
Come on man, stop worrying about being mainstream and just admit not just this song, they are a spectacular band that put out good full albums, cds whatever over and over again!great live too,!

Nice!
First song I ever heard by Nickelback and definitely a favorite.
I hated EVERYTHING after this. Which is disappointing, because this is a certifiable banger!
This song was written when they were still underground and trying to "make it" in the music world and you can really tell a difference with how much better and more enjoyable a listen it is than their material from 2001 and beyond.
Tough to believe how far these guys went. They were just another small band on CFOX in 1996 played with all of the now forgotten ones like Age of Electric, Pluto, Limblifter, Pure, Jar, and the Odds... along with staple Canadian favourites like Big Sugar, Matthew Good Band, 5440, and I Mother Earth. I saw them for free in 1999... but didn't care too much because The Headstones were the headliners.
And of all of those... these were the guys who 'made it' with songs like Rock Star and Too Bad? Makes me wonder if I would have wound up hating any of those other bands had they kept going?
