Back in those days they used natural, not synthetic dye. Orange was obtained by mixing red ( madder root) and yellow ( turmeric or weld). Because the yellow was not as lightfast as the red, the colour would fade to red.
It feels very counterintuitive for me as a screen printer, because I’m used to having to protect anything we print in red for outside use with an extra layer of varnish, to delay the fading process. But since I never worked with natural dyes, I’ll take your word for it… interesting as well 🙂

The Dutch Royal House is the House of Oranje-Nassau.
The history of this House is from the 15th centery strong connected to the history of The Netherlands. Since that time The family of the Oranges brought us kings and queens and a historical inlfuence to the board of the Netherlands but at this moment its becoming more a traditional thing. The King has no political influence any more.
The colour ORANGE comes of this historical background, and is still strong connected to us Dutch ( and our national feeling). Our National flag is red, white blue, but often there's an orange pennant attached to it.

The Orange in the flag also was changed into Red because at sea Red was better visible than Orange. That's what we learned in NL.

Orange is the color of the royal family.
This is the first time I hear that the color oranje faded into red. I would think the other way around? What I’ve been told my whole life is that the color red was better visible while on sea, instead of the orange color. The red-white-blue was used for hundreds of years, but it was only made official in the 1930’s.
And also you wondered about the red-white-blue being simular to the French flag. The fact is that the French and also Russian flags are based on the Dutch red, white and blue. Those colors are very well visible from afar.
Our Royal family are called 'van Oranje Nassau' Our red, white and blue flag has an Orange bandana, the orange is only added to the flag when we're celebrating a Royal birthday.
I was taught that the orange was replaced by red because red was better visible during at sea. Especially important during battle.
During the 30s of last century, the NSB party (Dutch counter part of Hitler’s NSDAP) wanted to make the Prinsenvlag the official Dutch flag. Hence queen Wilhelmina signed the decree describing the exact colours of the flag as we currently know it.
"Van Oranje" was not his surname, but "Prince of Orange" was his title, or rather one of his titles. So he had inherited the rule over that city although he might have never been there. Those nobility titles were, and still are, a remnant of the middle ages. A current example is the Prince of Wales: the title was worn by Charles III until his coronation, now it's worn by William.
But we claimed the colour completely when we made (bred) carrots to be orange.
And yes our flag used to be like that and changed, but I always was told it was changed cause orange couldn't be seen so well at sea.
Mind you our soccer rivalry with Spain is not cause of the war. We still remember South Africa and that is why they are in our arch nemesis Soccer list, together with the Portugese and the Argentinians and our neighbour Germany though the last one is purely out of good sibling rivalry.

The colors of the Dutch flag have changed several times throughout history. Originally, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the flag of the Netherlands was the "Prince's Flag." This flag consisted of three horizontal stripes in the colors orange, white, and blue. The Prince's Flag was used primarily during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) against Spain and was named after William of Orange.
Over time, the colors changed. The orange in the Prince's Flag gradually shifted to red. By the mid-17th century, the red-white-blue flag became the dominant version, partly for practical reasons such as visibility at sea. Eventually, in 1937, a Royal Decree officially established that the colors of the Dutch flag are red, white, and blue.
In summary, the original colors of the Dutch flag were orange, white, and blue, but they were later changed to red, white, and blue.

It is very simple. It is the name of Willem of Orange, our father of the country and the name of the Royal Family.
Time stamp 8:16 first the flags where orange white blue bit the coulor orange where made from a root (whitch fermented for 12 jears make the coulor orange) but turned more red over time , so eventually they stop painting them orange instead of Luxembourg ofcourse
There is a painter that used this coulor and he has the same problem, the pigment for his oil paintings where made in a wind mill still exists to day

About Blackpool: I'm not an expert, but 'black' used to be referring to an open or bare something. So basically, the name Blackpool COULD refer to a pool, pond, or any body of water that was either dark (black) or a bare and barron landscape.
i would like to add to the video the reason why the Dutch Queen in 1937 decided to make the red-white-blue officially the Dutch flag and make it that the orange-white-blue one wouldn't be used to represent The Netherlands anymore. (up to that moment both were kinda accepted, but the red-white-blue had become the standard).
well is has to do with the N*zi's, the (hardcore) national socialists of The Netherlands started using the orange-white-blue as "their" flag.
and the Queen (and most of the Dutch) weren't the biggest fans of those people.
so to distance The Netherlands from that ideology it was decided to make the red-white-blue (finally) the only official flag of The Netherlands.
but we do use a orange "wimpel" (the small flag of orange that is added to the flagpole) like at 3:59 to represent the royals.
this is done on the birthday of a member of the royal family (only the direct family of the ruling royal, so right now the King, Queen and there 3 daughters get this honour).
on those days we raise the flag with the "wimpel", on other national important days we keep the "wimpel" in storage and only raise the flag itself.

It's kinda like a catch 22: The color oranje/orange once was known by a different name: Yellow-red, red-yellow [geel-rood, rood-geel]
Before orange (the fruit, that is) stormed Europe, yellow-red was called simply that: yellow-red, or even just red. While both red and yellow are terms derived from Proto-Indo-European words, the roots of the word “orange” come from the Sanskrit term for the orange tree: nāraṅga.

In Dutch an orange is called a sinaasappel/appelsien/sinasappel.
The fruit originally came from China -> Sina [China-apples]
It was through Netherlands at the 18th century that the sinaasappel got distributed across northern Europe.
Appelsien / Sinaasappel got taken over by the Germans [Apfelsine], Swedish [apelsin], Danish and Norwegian [appelsin].
Western-Europe got introduced to the fruit orange in the 10th century.

I see the link with the explanation of the city name.... But if the name originally was named after a Celtic water god, and this word was that similar it got switched... Arausio & Orange/Oranje = a Latin Woopsy.

That's why Stadtholder William III of Orange brought about 40,000 troops with him. He wasn't sure his father-in-law would simply hand him the throne. Yes, you read that correctly; William III was married to Mary II of England, the daughter of King James II, which he deposed. Both William and Mary were anointed as equal constitutional monarchs, subjects to parliament. When William was off chasing the Jacobites led by James II - ending in his victory at the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland - Mary ruled over the daily businesses of the country.
At the time the Dutch Republic didn't recognise a king, but had as a head of state the highest ranking civil servant known as a "Stadtholder", literally meaning place-holder (for a Monarch). As such William didn't fret when they offered him the crown as a constitutional Monarch - as opposed to King James II who considered himself still to be an absolute Monarch -, as that was effectively what William already was.
Funny though: in 1667 the Dutch led the Raid on the Medway during the Second Anglo-Dutch War making the Royal Navy suffer its largest defeat in history to date - damage calculated to be about 6 Billion Pounds Sterling in todays value - just for a Dutchman to ascend to the throne just 21 years later (1688 Glorious Revolution).

Dat is dus niet waar he. Als er al een ruil was dan was dat Suriname. De Engelsen hebben New York gewoon van Nederland afgepakt. Alleen tijdens een van de Nederlands Engelse oorlogen hebben wij New york gewoon weer terug gepakt. De WIC vond New york niet echt meer rendabel (winstgevend). En met de vredesonderhandelingen Hebben ze toen afgesproken. Dat de Engelsen New york terug kregen als wij Suriname mochten houden. Even kort samen gevat.

Suriname ligt gewoon op het vaste land van Zuid Amerika. Suriname is dus geen eiland. Dat was dus mijn corectie. Met wat extra info. Geschiedenis is toevallig mijn hobby. Speciaal de geschiedenis van Suriname en de Nederlandse invloeden In Amerika. Vandaar mijn reactie.

What is it that you teach? I don't think it is either History or Languages because you would have known vertain things you are asking.
Flag: The orange version. They didn't "fade to red" that is a stupid comment on his behalf. A color can not fade to a darker color. They made it red because red was better visible than orange.
And no, there is no debate on bringing the orange version back and there probably never will be. The "Oranje Blanje Blue" was tainted during WWII when the traitors of the NSB (the Dutch Na2i collaborators) addopted it as their own. The flag is only used by far right wingers and neo na2is.
Making it red was purely done for visibility reasons. It resulted in the Red/White/Blue becoming the flag we were most seen with so it became the default. As mentioned in the video, it actually is fairly recent that it became official. (which was mainly done due to the WWII issues with it). Fun fact.. the Red/White/Blue is the oldest tri-color flag still in use. Yes, the French stole our flag and took it sideways. Yes the Russuian flag is based on the Dutch (and with that every flag based on the Russian flag as well)
Surnames: Smith... originating from Proto Germanic Smithaz, called/named Schmied in German, Smid in Dutch, Smed in Danish. Dutch, German and English are sister languages. In fact the closest language to old English is Old Frisian. Dutch has a boatload of loanwords from English, it is the other way around as well. Many of your English words have Dutch or German origins. (cookie, boss, dollar and keelhauling are a few examples of Dutch loandwords)
Language: Fun fact, until 1995 the Netherlands acttually had no official language. Yes, we all spoke Dutch.. or rather modern Dutch, but when it comes to an official status set in stone/law it was only in 1995 it became the official language in schools, coomunications from government etc. This was purely a formality as it was already treated as the official language since forever. There have been times where the Elite/Nobles refused to speak Dietsch and would speak the "sophisticated language of French"
You probably noticed I used the word Dietsch... it is the etymological parent of Dutch and means "{of} the people" ("Het volk" in Dutch). In our anthem we have the confusing line "Ben ik van Duitsen Bloed" (I am of German Blood). In old Dutch this line is "Ben ik van Dietschen bloed" (my blood is that of the people)
In fact... don't let me get started about our Anthem, even most of the Dutch don't realise what they are actually singing/saying. They will complain how they are "not of German blood and never have honored the king of Spain"... yeah.. they are correct in that.... but that is not what the Anthem is saying. No,no,no,no,no!! Our flag with the orange band instead of the red was the "Prinsjesdag flag" which was used by the NSB, the political party who worked with the Nazis during the war!! We use red, white and blue with a orange, euh, I dont know how it's called in English but it's called Wimpel in Dutch.

BS, when kids graduate we hang the Dutch flag. On the 4th of may is half post on the 5 of may we hang the flag in celebration of our freedom. On kings Day there are flags everywhere. It has nothing to do with the far right.

Orange will return to the flag as a pennant
For example, to commemorate victims of an (inter)national disaster. On King's Day and the birthdays of the Princess of Orange, Queen Máxima and Princess Beatrix, the flag is flown with an orange pennant. On all other occasions the flag flies without an orange pennant.

Truth is, nobody knows why the flag changed in the 17th century (and not in 1937, that only made it official). The most popular take on it is that the country was divided into two mainstream political groups. The group supporting the house of orange and the group supporting an independent state from the house of orange (a true republic). The first group waved the orange white blue flag, the second waved the red white blue flag. This makes the flag far older than the French one. The truth why the flag changed is unknown. By the way William of Orange Nassau came from Nassau. I doubt he ever set foot in Orange. Fun fact: Our father of the fatherland did not speak Netherlandic. He spoke Dutch as Dutch was then all languages north of the alps until Denmark until Germany became a thing. The English just never changed our language from Dutch to Netherlandic, but did change the German language from Dutch to German.
