On that day, the plane back from Germany (the final was played in the South of Germany, quite far away from the Netherlands) did not arrive at Amsterdam airport (Schiphol) but rather at a regional airport (Eindhoven) and the bus with the players had to drive about 120km along a major highway, and it was lined with people all the way. That is also how they got to those 1.5 million viewers, these were obviously not along the canals.

I lived in Amsterdam at the time. It was a weird week.
At the time, I had an American friend staying with me. He was a black guy, he had dreadlocks, and he had an orange hoody.
He came home on the day of the semifinal against Germany in Cologne, and he was a little upset.
He was walking down the street, wondering why it was so quiet, when, all of a sudden, there was this huge roar, people came out into the street, lifted him on their shoulders, screaming Rudy! Rudy!

When people now see people dressed as Ruud Gullit with his thick rasta hair wig and brown face, it is not meant to be racist. We then simply imitate our Ruud Gullit. He is and was our hero at the time.
The Dutch team landed at Eindhoven Airport and they drove to Amsterdam with a few busses. When I saw that I immediatly went to the highway (A12) near Utrecht and stood on the bridge over the highway when they came. It was insane! Later I heard that Wesley Sneyder (also a young boy then) stood on the same bridge! He reached the final with the Dutch team in 2010.
That boat is what we call a ‘ woonboot’ . There are people that live in this kind of boats. But it is a houseboat, it has it’s own spot in the canal or ‘gracht’. It’s just a house to the family.
This ‘houseboat’ almost has sunk.

There was a lot of emotion that came out, ww2 and the lost World Cup final in '74 against Germany. I was 16 and never forget this.

The player with the dreadlocks is Ruud Gullit. The banner De finale was dinsdag refers to the match on Tuesday in which the Netherlands team beat the German team - some regarded that as revenge for the lost world championship final in 1974.
Semi final was on Tuesday but felt like the final (there still was some trauma from 1974 and 1978)

i was at the museumplein and since im 1.64 cm (5.4) i had to stand on a bench to not get suffocated because everybody was pushed together. thank God nothing bad happened (at my area) and it was an experience ill never forget.
I was in Amsterdam that day by car, parked my car along a canal. Unfortunately at the last moment they changed the route of the boat parade and my car was along the route. My roof was caved in, most likely because people climbed on top of it. Next to me was an old mini parked that was even in more worse condition.
Guess besides me a lot of people had property damage because of this.
I was in that crowd along the canal 5 minutes from our home, 14 years old standing on some street furniture but not a houseboat 🫣 good memories

Lot of living boats where people actually live in were sinking that day, thousands people stood on them. When we win this European Championship 2024 there well be at least 2 million people in Amsterdam 😅 Still goose bumps when I see this 😊

I was 14 and winnig against Germany was unbelievable. The final against the Soviets almost didn't matter. After thise games everyone was on the street celebrating. We even got free drinks at pubs. Still got all the newspaper's ands stuff. One of the best times of my life after the birth of my kids 😅
I missed all of it! 💔 At 10 years old, summercamp seemed more important... 🙈

I watched it live on TV. It was a insane time. Everybody wanted to get to Amsterdam. People sitting on the roof of Busses because there was no room. Amazing times. It's called a Woonboot. People who owned these where really mad and sued the city of Amsterdam.
I happend to see this very samenvideo a few months ago. I do not remember at which AirPort the footballteam landed, but I was looking for the bustour across the Netherlands. It was live on television with cars along the roads. People on the bridges over the highway.
I'm Dutch. The head coach / manager and assitand where players in 1988 Koeman Brothers!! Then i was only 12 years old, saw it on TV ! They landend in Einhoven ( shout part of the Neterlands) Bus trip too Amsterdam all live on TV for the first time. I was hooked on the TV, seen it never forgot it!!

I remember that my father was at a concert in Amsterdam at that time (he had a subscription for a series of saturday afternoon concerts), and after the match he would come back home by train and bus.
So I took the bike and went to the city center to see how that would go and if he could safely get off the train and on a bus back home.
It was absolute mayhem in the city center then... buses could barely run their normal route.
And of course this was on the day before when that video was made.
