How To Tell If You Have Pattern Hair Loss (In 15 Seconds)

- Pattern hair loss - or androgenic alopecia (AGA) - is one of the most common hair loss disorders.
AGA can be diagnosed by a medical professional. Having said that, we can also glean insights as to whether we might have AGA - all by looking at the hairs we shed, and determining if they have something known as hair diameter diversity.
Hair diameter diversity is a term that describes differences in thickness across hair strands. If hair diameter diversity of greater than 20% is present, that implies we probably have some degree of hair follicle miniaturization: one of the defining characteristics of AGA. This greatly increases our likelihood of getting diagnosed with pattern hair loss / AGA by a doctor or dermatologist.
In this video, we'll explain the steps we can take to identify if you might have pattern hair loss. Keep in mind that the quicker we receive clarity on our own hair loss type(s), the faster we can seek effective treatments, and the better our hair loss outcomes.

It could also be telogen effluvium cuz I had this same issue and I’ve been going thru it for 2 years already on my temples. Same hairline, no recession or nothing. The hair thickness came back but I got stressed again and then it came back again. Currently my hair is back to normal. It was a weird period of my life because my dad has a full head of hair, great hairline, and my brother has a juvenile hairline with fine hair naturally.

That’s me! I’ve been taking 1.25mg fin daily for years but now I’m getting increased shedding and miniaturization. Why is that? How can it lose effectiveness? I’m thinking of taking 1.25mg of oral minoxidil. I have diffused thinning. It would be great if you can do a video on oral minoxidil, dosage, efficacy and side effects compared to topical. Tellogen effluvium has more severe hair shedding and typically resolves after some time . Androgenetic alopecia is about follicle miniaturization and diameter reduction. The hairs become smaller and smaller until they are completely miniaturized

This could be the start of female pattern baldness or alopecia, which is essentially the same thing. Finasteride is your best bet for now. Also try massaging your scalp its said to help. If your hair thats falling out has a white bulb at the end you might have Telogen effluvium. Its been 6 months since your comment im assuming you may know what you have by now. gl!
@@moose9626 hey mine's kinda the same issue. i'm 20 and have been losing a lot of hair since 15. but the diameter and stuff seems to be the same for all hair, i see no difference at all, and oh yes there's a white bulb as well. plus i have hypothyroidism, could it be AGA or TE? my doctor doesn't know shit and sent me off prescribing iron meds alone though my hb is 13.5
@@nidailias Ahh hypothyroidism definitely causes hairloss so it most likely isn't AGA or TE (TE can happen if you experienced extreme levels of stress) but it would of stopped by now. Even if it were chronic TE it would of stopped by now, although there are a handful of rare cases that have lasted from 5-7 years.
But hyperthyroidism is going to be difficult to be adjusted too, when it comes to living with it you'll have to find the correct balance of medication to avoid hairloss due to the fact the meds itself could cause you hairloss, yet the downside of not taking meds is that it will still cause hair loss. I've seen people swap between meds and experienced great hair growth results.
The fact he put you on Iron meds is really good, if you have low iron intake, it'll cause low ferritin which is related to protein in your blood that is correlated to your hair growth/loss. So finding the right balance for you is the best way to combat it which would require blood tests to see what your Iron is at. If you are still experiencing issues with hair loss after finding the correct balance, the only real treatment I've found that has worked for people (which is pricy) is PRP treatments, although that is blood/plasma taken from you and put into your scalp. it can cost anywhere between 700-1300 USD depending where you are.
I hope I haven't discouraged you at all, sometimes people take the iron pills along with Biotin to also help with hair growth/thickness, you'll also want to be sure to not take too much biotin aswell.
@@moose9626 ah thank you so much, this was really helpful. being a med student i'm definitely under a lot of stress all the freakin time but yeah as you said i don't think it could be TE as well. nor do I think it's AGA bcs no one in my family has it. i don't have any bald spots yet but it's depressing nonetheless bcs i've lost so much volume and the texture of my hair has changed a lot as well. taking a head bath makes me wanna die bcs of how much hair i lose. i haven't really worked on my thyroid bcs i seem to have no other symptoms of it. i really hope the meds help with my hair loss bcs it's giving me so much anxiety. and speaking of PRP, is it effective? i'd honestly sprint to get it done if it actually works

Theoretically, yes, as far as I know, men who can't grow beards and don't have a lot of body hair are less likely to be bald, while men with a shit ton of beard and body hair are most likely to go bald, however it is not defining really, hell, my stepdad has a shit ton of beard and it grows really quickly but he's not bald at all

Here in Brazil, it's the famous finasteride and Minoxidil, is there anything new there? Is topical finasteride effective? It's not talked about much here. I've been taking finasteride for a year, before that I applied topical Minoxidil, then I stopped and started taking oral Minoxidil 2.5 mg because it's more practical, but I don't know if the results are the same as the topical. I'm thinking of going back to using the topical along with everything else I take to see if it helps. I am 17 years old and I already see my receding hairline with thin hair, and it bothers me. I did DHT tests and it's normal even taking the medication. Do you have any knowledge to pass on to me? Because here in Brazil, they are very limited, so I come looking here with you. @@EE-jn8kudepends on your haircut too, if you have shorter hair on the sides and back of your head not all hairs are 100% the same lenght. Also some level of miniaturization (10%) is normal in people with no androgenetic alopecia

You will only notice when your hair loss starts... Maybe you notice early, with a hair loss at sides, those "enters"( I dont know how to say it in english) but not big enters, a diferent hair line maybe can be the start of it.

My dad became bald probably since at age 20,me on other hand had full juvenile thick dense hair until age 23, later I learned I had pituitary problem which meant gonadotropin and hormones deficiency, as I went on trt my hair started falling on first week like crazy ,don't know if testosterone is only cause of this hairloss since I got many vitamins deficiency and thyroid disease

Yeah, if it had the bulb and u were losing tons of hair it would be Telogen effluvium which is somewhat reverseable, if it has a black bulb its you basically going bald. Best bet is taking Finasteride, Head massages, and Minox.

@@moose9626 how's a black bulb related to AGA? A black bulb means that the hair was shed before the telogen phase due to mishandling. In AGA you shed telogen vellus hairs with a bulb

If it doesn’t have a bulb then that means breakage and it’s not Falling out at the root and it’s breaking in half, which could mean the shafts of ur hair are weak and could be a deficiency
