@@jaydee6574 You said exactly what I was thinking. Each show's animation works in the context of the anime and the moment in the anime. Like with AOT, it was fast because Levi was fleeing for his life through a crowded city while he was the only target of a large group of people with similar gear who were hunting him down to kill him, so of course he was moving quickly. It was pretty much like an escape sequence in video game, you only have so much of a chance to escape before something in the environment or people in the environment kill you before you can make it out. MHA is slow because it shows Todoroki's focus and confidence with his final attack after spending years holding himself back due to inheriting part of his power from someone who abused him. Just because there are things that often work in animation as a whole, doesn't mean they'll always work, context is everything.
@@officialAlexisMaun not really. most of their scenes are slow paced scene to scene attacks with maybe a big final attack with good animation. the only scenes I can think of with pure sakuga is deku vs kaachan 2 and the first fight between the 2 villains in season 4.

both are impressive and complex in their own ways. Levi chase scene had different camera and dynamic use of the environment to emphasize chaos and tension. Deku vs todoroki had excellent use of buildup with different techniques blended so perfectly(the impact frames, smears and cross flares) an average animator would tear their hair off just to decipher how yutaka did it. considering the whole animation itself would've been a clusterfuck of mess if it was done even slightly off
True. Besides, I feel like it was meant to be as erratic and chaotic. It makes it feel like Levi was barely keeping up with the highly-trained assassins. That they're not giving him a break. And he still wiped the floor with them. I personally found it more intense than most of their battles against titans.

I love the talk of Todoroki’s animation so much. The reason that impact frame on Todoroki hits so bright when his hand sparks up rather than when it makes contact with Deku is because the biggest moment of this scene is not the physical fight between the two. While him fighting Deku is an important moment in the story, the more overwhelmingly important moment thats been lead up to is the fact that Todoroki is a person with 2 powers but absolutely refuses to use his left side’s power due to abuse from his father, who he gets that left side power from genetically. And the IMPACT of the scene is Todoroki accepting that he is not his father for simply having his genes, but rather that DESPITE his relation to the man that hospitalized his mother, that beat him as a child, and is all around a horrible human being... that despite all of that he is his own person and, to quote deku “IT’S [HIS] POWER” not his fathers. And the big burst on his hand is THE moment Todoroki accepts this reality and THAT is the game changing story changing moment worthy of its own absolutely massive flashy impact frame. Even if it may appear early in a fight to have such a large impact frame before any contact against an opponent has been made, its Nakamura using this, not just to make an important fight impactful, but to celebrate the story he’s working on directly in his visual work that goes beyond just “I’m the best of the best lemme show my stuff in this important scene.” Its him knowing the scene inside and out and how to best use his skills to make a fight not just look good, but also make sure each important moment in that fight gets its moment to shine.
Great content. You should do more animator analysis from legends like Ohira, Inoue, Itano,YohYoshinari, Muraki, shinji Hashimoto, Norio Matsumoto, Okiura, Yoshinari Kanada, Ando, Koji Morimoto, Kameda,Obari etc etc for some video. Going through their top sakugabooru posts etc.. I would love to see maybe a breakdown of some things certain ones are famous for. Like Itano's circuses and introduction of 3 dimentionality in air combat, Anno's explosions or Kanada's effects and how they influenced everyone
@@nrdnation in general the entire trigger yoh Yoshinari, imaishi style and school of animation that is basically a love letter to Yoshinari Kanada's animation and legacy would be a great video
It's nice to hear the perspective of a person that isn't biased, however, there are a few things that -if you had had context- you would've known why they did it the way the did.
If you plan on doing a lot of these reactions, you might want to break them down into shorter or one-series videos; it'll give you more content to space out, and minimize the chance that a bad day of copyright claims takes out one big video you did on multiple animations.
It's funny because "reactors" get away with just watching the video and not even putting in any decent commentary get away with it but videos like these will get copyrighted
I really like seeing those roughs, like at 10:47. There's something pleasing about that roughness that is lost in the final images, and I sometimes feel like all that cleaning up doesn't really add much to the whole thing. If the roughs were cleaned up just a _tiny_ bit (like fill in the blank frames that are probably there for timing purposes) as well as having added some rough coloring, I feel like I'd like the end result way better than the actual finished anime.
To give a different recommendation For me, personally, Hajime no Ippo's fights scenes are the best hand to hand fight scenes I've ever seen, especially in "overselling" the impact and effect of each punch. Sadly I don't have the technical know how to explain WHY I love those scenes and what they do to get that reaction from me.
Man, here I was hyped because that scene from Wolf Children is also my favorite scene, from my favorite anime movie... And the copyright ruins it. At least we got to hear some of your thoughts on it. I understand how making these videos can be annoying, but I really appreciated this one. Your insight is very interesting.
I just watched your Vimeo. sad to see things being cut out. I love your new camera it looks very professional and I also like the mini advice aka the mini look into smearing. It felt a bit long/prolonged but that's fine by me, I'm just thinking with people and attention span. Overall great video and I'm excited to see your video next week!
@9:54 the impact frames are used there due to how the quirk works, which is called "flash fire" where puts all the energy of the fire to into a single area creating a strong combustion flame
Loved your output on Wolf Children, that scene is also one of my favorites and that's why that film is one of my favorite animated films of all-time. 👍
Animation styles definitely have their technical aspects. But they also serve the tone of the story being told. So in Attack on Titan, the frenetic animation is meant to reflect how the protagonists feel. Nervous, unsure, jittery. The camera or the effects don't calm down, because this is war, nothing ever calms down. Whereas in MHA, time and care is taken to carefully show Todoroki using his fire side for the first time. That is the point of that arc - what everything was building up to. This is a celebration of someone embracing his own identity, for the first time. That's why there's buildup, things slow down, and when he finally uses fire, it's pure awe. Neither of these scenes / animations are superior or inferior to each other. They serve different storytelling purposes.
So interesting to see your input on this I never thought someone would complain about AoT legs and say so much good stuff and My Hero Academia's explosions lol, really new opinions to consider. It shows a bit of the Oscar's effect where experts really see things different from normal people, I'm so surprised that you prefered Wolf Children over AoT sexy daddy Levi, but you still give your reasons that I don't share but make sense
nice video... i really hope u can cover naotoshi shida's animation pieces...there is something about how fluid it is that i wanna know more about... keep it up
Hey Howard, awesome video! I'd love to see you react to and break down the animation from Dragon Ball Super Broly. In particular, the Vegeta vs Broly and Gogeta vs Broly fights respectively. That film might have some of the most beautiful animation ever created.
You need to look at several scenes from Attack on Titan season 3. Especially Levi vs the beast titan. They had a freelance animator come in to do some scenes. I can’t remember his name, but he does some astonishing work.
I think he dosn't make any choose respect color, this one is aded later in a computer program and there's people who is especifically in charge for the color of a show or movie.
SISAD GS this definitely maybe true, but whenever I see his work when compared to the rest of an anime, there’s a lot more contrast to the usually color scheme. So to rephrase, the color choices seem to be cranked to 12, I’m no professional it’s just how I see it lol
This is so cool! It really gives a new perspective. I actually kinda want to hear your thoughts on Blue Exorcist. Mainly because of all the flames and demons present. I want to see how you'd do that.
I'd love to see your breakdown of fight scenes in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I like the animation in the show, but the show as a whole has no Ma.
Omg yeeees! A video about Mononoke would be epic... An incredible way of using 3d and 2d animation... It has a very unique visual style... Beautiful anime 👍
I'd love to see you react to some of Kyoto Animation's character animation, while I love the flashy hype type of animation in this video, kyoani's ability to impress with characters having a normal conversation is something special.
Not gonna lie, kinda disappointed you didn't talk about Weilin Zhang, Chengxi Huang, and Spancer Wan. That team of 3 are fucking incredible. Zhang's recent combat work on Hitori no Shita and Boruto last year really just put him at my top 2, maybe top 1. But maybe it could also be Chengxi Huang's direction behind his work that is pushing him to #1.
When you were reviewing the first one and you said the smoke coming from his back looked nice. That came from something called ODM gear and the smoke is coming from something that make you go faster mid air to help you speed up when your like grappling onto a wall.

Like Itano's circuses and introduction of 3 dimentionality in air combat, Anno's explosions or Kanada's effects and how they influenced everyone
yes!! i would love to see some Yoshinari breakdowns, mans a genius.
@@nrdnation in general the entire trigger yoh Yoshinari, imaishi style and school of animation that is basically a love letter to Yoshinari Kanada's animation and legacy would be a great video
He made some
@@mathieutdf5446 I know he made a few and they are great, that's why I said "you should do more of this"
@@gkalaitza2183 i meant he made some of the one you named
Loved this, thank you so much for your input
I love so many of these scenes
They always get me so hype
It's nice to hear the perspective of a person that isn't biased, however, there are a few things that -if you had had context- you would've known why they did it the way the did.
I love that i share my favourite scene in ALL of 2d animation with you! Its just such a fun scene with a lot of energy and aghhh
yutaka's work is absolutley stunning
If you plan on doing a lot of these reactions, you might want to break them down into shorter or one-series videos; it'll give you more content to space out, and minimize the chance that a bad day of copyright claims takes out one big video you did on multiple animations.
great idea - thank you!!
If the roughs were cleaned up just a _tiny_ bit (like fill in the blank frames that are probably there for timing purposes) as well as having added some rough coloring, I feel like I'd like the end result way better than the actual finished anime.
i've never been more glad of clicking on my recomended. Thanks for the video.
so good, loved the my hero sequence so much the contrast was amazing as you pointed out
tbh.. I love Howard Wimshurst "fangirl "ing
The heck are you doing here lol.
Love your animation (Domics inspired).
To give a different recommendation
For me, personally, Hajime no Ippo's fights scenes are the best hand to hand fight scenes I've ever seen, especially in "overselling" the impact and effect of each punch.
This was a really informative watch. Thanks for the great content, homie
You should react to & breakdown the Genos vs Saitama fight in One Punch Man S01! Some of the best animation I've ever seen *-*
This was such a great video! I would love to see you react to the fight scenes in the monogatari series.
@9:54 the impact frames are used there due to how the quirk works, which is called "flash fire" where puts all the energy of the fire to into a single area creating a strong combustion flame
I was waiting for Howard to react to that Todoroki scene
Loved your output on Wolf Children, that scene is also one of my favorites and that's why that film is one of my favorite animated films of all-time. 👍
Yutaka and his work are one of the best animators in Japanese animation industry
That fire scene with Shoto is one of my favourite animation-scenes ever
Wow! Glad to see appreciation of a Wolf Children cut. I also love that sequence, the animation, music, everything creates a great moment.
I’d be so pissed if UA-cam removes this for “copyright”
This comment didn't age well. 💀 He already made a comment saying some of the footage was flagged for copyright and your comment is right under it
b o o m holy shit
1:07 he was so scared so it make sens
Wow really cool and interesting breakdown of the different techniques
So interesting to see your input on this I never thought someone would complain about AoT legs and say so much good stuff and My Hero Academia's explosions lol, really new opinions to consider.
It shows a bit of the Oscar's effect where experts really see things different from normal people, I'm so surprised that you prefered Wolf Children over AoT sexy daddy Levi, but you still give your reasons that I don't share but make sense
The dopest thing about anime is that their last medium of 2D animation that tell full, fleshed out stories
nice video... i really hope u can cover naotoshi shida's animation pieces...there is something about how fluid it is that i wanna know more about... keep it up
Must make more of these, using shows and scenes we have seen before and breaking them down is really useful for a amateur as myself
Hope this will become a series😊😊
Oh man didn't know I needed this
Hey Howard, awesome video! I'd love to see you react to and break down the animation from Dragon Ball Super Broly. In particular, the Vegeta vs Broly and Gogeta vs Broly fights respectively. That film might have some of the most beautiful animation ever created.
really great breakdown! Learned a lot
I’m not only interested in the square effect, but also with the whole animation process and the animation industry as a whole
Your channels underrated
You need to look at several scenes from Attack on Titan season 3. Especially Levi vs the beast titan. They had a freelance animator come in to do some scenes. I can’t remember his name, but he does some astonishing work.
Nakamura has honestly just become one my favorites in the past year, his use of color and momentum is just mind boggling
I wish I could also watch attack on titan as casually as that, without gasping and saying omg unlimited times
Please react to the animation in the One Punch Man "Genos vs Saitama" scene
great vid, i would really like to see you talk about Fog hill of the five element
just got the course i am looking forward to starting it , bit intimidated but i am ready for it .
awesome!
Man your shirt is awesome, where did you get it ?
hey thanks! I'm really sorry I can't remember the name of the site if I think of it i'll try to find you
Nice breakdown 👍
I'd love to see your breakdown of fight scenes in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I like the animation in the show, but the show as a whole has no Ma.
Question. Is most modern anime handdrawn (like 2D animation) or is it done with computers
It was a cool easter egg to find out that some of the detailed titan designs were modeled after real people
You 100% need to look at the animation of Space Dandy. It has some of the most interesting and unique animation I’ve ever seen in anime.
Very knowledgeable, thanks for the video.
Just curious is you've seen Nakamura's work in the latest mha movie "Heroes Rising" because the final fight scene is just a visual spectacle.
This was actually a great video. You explained a lot of cool stuff here. Its a like and a sub from me.
Yutaka Nakamura is the absolute best, his control of movement in the fight in the finale of the first episode of Kekkai Sensen.
when you start animating you watch these differently some nice work
Does using a anime charcater for animation vid on yt give copyright claim or stirke??
This. Is. BRILLIANT.
Just watching this guy being a passionate expert on animation is interesting
You should see mononoke the medicine seller it is very visually appealing
Yes!
Love your channel bro and also do you support arsenal?
hahaha I haven't watched a football game in years! the last time i did was the world cup and I supported England! (they lost) hahaha
@@HowardWimshurst I thought you were an arsenal fan being from London
What is the best software for animation?
When you were reviewing the first one and you said the smoke coming from his back looked nice. That came from something called ODM gear and the smoke is coming from something that make you go faster mid air to help you speed up when your like grappling onto a wall.
pilipino fun here i waiting of all your video
and i love your animation
and im otaku anime fun
