      They have their own HD level scan just not 4K in the library of congress. Their scan came from a original deposit for the copyright a faded Eastman color print. If you go there they let you watch it on a monitor and on DVDs. They never got a low fade archival copy as even Lucasfilm never had one, Fox refused to pay for them according to Lucas. By the time they asked Lucasfilm again all they had was the 1997 version and Library of Congress would not accept it. The single backup copy of the negative that Fox did pay for and was struck in the 70s was unusable and was never checked. The whole 3 strip master was misaligned and a color layer was missing. Also it was dirty as hell. They printed extra grain onto it that was not on the Oneg.

      No, the version they should archive doesn't exist (yet). At least not completely.
      Search for Mike Verta Star Wars on UA-cam. His approach is by far the best due to the technique. Even better than Project 4K77.
      Unfortunately he has only done 85% of the movie so far, will not finish it and would only release it via official channels (Disney).
      For now though the best version probably really is 4K77.

      I got various versions of Star Wars on laserdisc, vhs and DVD. With all the faffing George did to his movies I was never really interested in buying the bluray. I could stream them from Sky or NowTV if I really wanted.
      I then heard about 4K77. So I went out and bought a Star Wars bluray boxset and then downloaded the 1080p (grainy) versions of 4K77, 4K83 and a grind house Empire. I dont have a 4K TV... Christmas time we watched these glorious originals on our wall using an xbox driven 1080p projector with the hifi on. I got to show my grown up kids a little bit of what is was like to see these movies when I was a kid.
      Even Empire looked great despite all the artifacts. It was good enough to fool me into thinking I was watching an actual film projection.

    George Lucas: all the negatives were destroyed in the making of the Special Editions, so we’ll never see the theatrical editions again. (Insert Sith cackle laughter here)
    4k77 crew: I am a Jedi, like my father before me.
    Seriously, thank you to all involved in this and Harmy’s Despecialized. The fact that these keep happening is proof how bad the fans want it. And the fact that Lucas refuses rubs salt and lemon juice in a 23 year old wound that will never close as long as they keep insisting that the Not So Special Editions are the only way to watch Star Wars. Han will always shoot first for me.

    • @meneerjansen00

      How can negatives destroyed when making another cut or remaster of a movie? I simply refuse to believe that, even if Lucas says that. I think it's a non-destructive process.

    • @matthewgaudet4064
      @matthewgaudet4064 4 роки тому +3

      The negative was disassembled washed in a special chemical bath to remove dirt, and reassembled. But all the color reversal stock of things like optical effects, wipes and dissolves had to be redone from scratch from the original film pieces and recombined. And they literally printed onto film the new cgi effects and altered shots and cut them into the negative. I'm not an expert but i think they would need a later generation copy away from the Original negative. Which has the original cut intact. Something like what was used to strike release prints. But we were told by Lucasfilm that those had been used so many time that they were degraded too. The problem is the more popular the film and the more prints that were struck off the negative the worse shape a film is in. Not a problem today because films are finished digitally and remain perfect as long as they keep updating the servers and have retention of data.

    • @ShamanMcLamie
      @ShamanMcLamie 4 роки тому +5

      There are a lot of issues with that, especially for a company. Whenever you change the definition, you're changing the format. It means you always have to go back to the Original reals then clean up, edit and change them slightly to work on the new format. No VHS, DVD, or Blueray is actually a theatrical release. Slight changes were made to every home release of the Star Wars movies. Actually multiple versions of the Original 1977 release of Star Wars was put out do to the release being rushed by fox. They still weren't done editing. The voice of Aunt Beru was different depending on the theater and time you saw the movie.
      Now what your proposing is to spend all the time, effort and money to make it work in 4K for two different versions of the movie and then create a system where the audience member can further edit it. That is pretty ridiculous. Having multiple versions can create marketing confusion as well. If you're really desperate to cut out parts you don't like just get your own video editor and mix and match scenes.

    Yes, these are killer! They have also done an amazing series of versions called D+77, D+80 and D+83 (which will be released soon) which use the UHD Disney+ versions as the main source material, but which use footage from the 4K film scans to replace scenes changed in the special editions. You get a little dip in visual quality from time to time due to this, but for me they have become my favourite versions. It's worth going through the sign-up process to get there, believe me! I was shocked by how emotional my response was to seeing these films in such high quality without the special edition changes. Not having to squint my eyes through scenes like Han meeting Jabba in Ep IV, Vader's 'Noooooo!' and Jedi Rocks was such a joy. It really brought the magic back for me.

      Negative one is right there is not 8K of information on a release print. I would be surprised if there was more than 2k. You do 4k so when you compress you don't lose quality or so i've heard. Now if you had access to the Original negative only the Vistavision stuff would be possible for 8k scanning. But you would noway near get that kind of quality. It is not 65mm neg. Only 35mm. 8k is too costly and few films are done in that. The only i can think of is the Wizard of OZ. We were lucky just to get the Special Edition in 4k res when its an original shot, but when its a 2K shot it is uprezzed. That is an official 4K release and every cgi new shot is 2K res. The optical effects, the visual effects on the originals had so many passes to get a final shot they probably are closer to 1080P at best. With 5 levels of grain that are not in the live action shots.

Imagine my confusion when "episode lV" was added years later. I'd really like to see that original release again. Years later when they started filming the first episode, I came across some info on the internet that Lucas had split the story into 9 parts and I'd argue with a friend who was a Star Wars nut that the last 3 parts would eventually be filmed because Lucas was constantly tinkering with the original trilogy. He just couldn't help himself. Eventually George proved me right. lol

    • @matthewgaudet4064

      Lucas third trilogy never happened. Because he cut down the number of episodes to VI. Even though during pre-production of the Phantom Menace Rick McCallum was talking about Lucas working on the prequels and sequels. Lucas just had no desire to do more Luke stories. He spent nearly ten years doing the prequels and another 6 years on Clone Wars. He spent almost two decades doing Anakin Skywalker stories. And he wanted to do even more prequel stories in an abandoned series called Star Wars underworld. In the 30 some old years since Return of the Jedi he had more than enough time to write a sequel after return of the jedi, focusing on Luke. He could have even handed it off to another director. He just was not interested.

    The latest 4K release and the version that's streaming in a lower bitrate on Disney+ is a closer match to the colour timing of the original release than the Blu-ray, which was an abomination. The Mike Verta 4K restoration took multiple 35mm prints and custom software to overlay and compare each and remove anomalies in dirt and grain to restore fine detail. It's a better technique than restoring a single print because there will always be some degree of interpretation when data is restored using interpolation by resampling a single source. That being said, this still looks like a great release and it's always good to have options.

    4k77 is great, but honestly I prefer the recent D+77 by oohteedee. The reason I personally want the original 1977 version is simply because I think it's a better film, not because I have any nostalgia for "authentic theatrical experience" (I'm only 20 years old). 4k77 is an amazing transfer, but the inconsistencies in the colors just bother me way too much for me to fully enjoy.
    Even though it's not a perfect 1977 version, I think D+77 is the version with the best colors so it's my go to version. You can find it on the same page as 4k77 if you're interested.

      That's only because you are way too used to revisionist transfers that scrub grain, make more 'consistent' colors and are artificially sharpened. That version looks washed out with at times a smeary picture and muted colors. 4K77 however is AMAZING with a very lively transfer with nice vivid 70s color and no scrubbing of grain. If you want to see literally the original 1977 version, 4K77 is the only one.

      Every home video release of every movie is "revisionist" and fixes inconsistencies because film is an inherently inconsistent format. It's all up to personal preference, and my personal preference is D+77 because I'm not looking for EXACTLY what was on screen in the 70's with the EXACT technicolor grade because I have no nostalgia for it. 4K77 (by Team Negative 1) and Harmy’s Despecialized Edition are Fan RESTORATIONS, they are not fan edits. Fan restorations seek to restore the film as close as possible to the original version of the film as it was seen in its original theatrical release. Adywan’s “Star Wars: Revisited” is a fan edit. He added and changed things within the film that he, personally, thought could’ve been done better or weren’t done correctly in the original theatrical 1977 version of the film. There’s a huge difference between a “fan edit” and a “fan restoration”.

      You can download a "Digital Noise Reduction - DNR" version of 4K77 that has reduced film grain. They released it alongside the normal 4K77 version. You can find similar ones for ROTJ.

      @@j.k4150 It is a little less sharp in some scenes but it looks really nice. But there is a catch. The DNR version only exists for 4k77 v1.0. The newest version of 4k77 is v1.4. The newer versions have much better color correction and some other fixes. TN1 said that they would have to redo the DNR for the new CC so they didn't bother. But this summer SkyDude is coming out with his "4k77 Skymasters Technicolor Edition" that has a better CC and custom DNR and it looks amazing (there are already 2 beta versions out). And later there is a new 4k77 v2.0 coming out.

    2:03 This sort of highlights an argument I've always made. The Blu-Ray looks more natural and that's fine, and the 4K77 looks like a movie from 1976 should. I wouldn't want to watch Gone with the Wind all made to look natural and modern. Half of the fun of vintage films is being transported back to the time when that movie came from.
    Think of it as a vintage car with a modern engine, transmission, drivetrain, seats, wheels, brakes. Sure.... it RESEMBLES a vintage car and it works like a car should. But it's nothing like experiencing an ALL ORIGINAL vintage car. 8-track player and all.

    This is exciting! The oldest version I've seen is a VHS Special Edition, but I've mostly watched them on DVD. I'd like to see someone combine this with some of the actual improvements that were made.

      We’ll wait until there actually are improvements.

    The one VHS tape I have held onto is my 1993 Widescreen edition of Star Wars (YES Star Wars, that's what it was called when I saw it back in 1977 aged 6) which I have used only once or twice.
