  • After 44 years, it's hard to imagine that there are still mysteries to be uncovered in Star Wars, but today marks yet another fascinating discovery! We've finally decoded the text inside the iconic TIE fighter cockpit computer displays!
    Special thanks to Ender Smith, for providing his amazing research skills as well as reconstructing the font used in this video, available here:

    This font is going to be in every other Star Wars fan film from here to eternity, or at least it should be. It appears to instantly imbue that feeling of 70s futurism to anything it’s pasted on, in a way that isn’t at all overused or cliche.

      I hope not. If the Star Wars humanoids are anything like us, then they would change and evolve their fonts for the same reasons we do: Technology improvements, better readability (ergonomically), efficiency, boredom, desire to be unique and recognizable as a brand (Empire vs. Alliance), etc. So as the stories move forward in time, I would hope their surrounding aesthetic would do the same.

    “VELOS” in aviation (and probably other areas as well) VLOS stands for “Visual Line Of Sight” maybe the “E” between the V and L means “Electronic”. I know when we verbally say “VLOS” it does phonetically sound like VELOS ( Vee-Loss).

    QATech sounds like a manufacturer's name, I'd guess the targeting module is the "Velos" type. Warning at the end is probably the computer noting an alert that the "QATech Velos" has detected, like maybe the sensor specifically reads the targets shields, and the warning was saying "the enemy ship has changed it's shield power" or something.

      'Vehicular Engagement Line-Of-Sight' - a targeting mode where the computer tracks fast-moving targets and needs to be ready to calculate leads for the pilot's lasers, as opposed to optimizing for ground-attack profiles with other munitions, maybe.
      ...Not that we see regular TIE fighters carry anything other than their pair of built-in lasers until the Squadrons game came out, but it wouldn't surprise me if Sienar just standardized the targeting computer across all its TIE variants.

      Velo for velocity. S for S foil, as in the "Strike Foils" that are the wings of an x-wing.
      "QATech" meaning Quad Acceleration Technology (on the back of the targetted XWing).
      What was the last part? EDIT: The last part was just "Warning" which could mean it's warning that you may lose targeting lock at any time due to the maneuverability of the x-wing, meaning you may be firing into allies if it moves away, or something.

    One of the issues with Letraset is that after you have used the letters you need, you are left with sheets of random letters that are left over. So the designers may also just be using up spares. We used to label cassette tapes in the 80's and we had boxes of left over letters, numbers symbols and shapes. Some time a letter wouldn't transfer and you would look for a matching line of curve in a surplus unused letter to go over and fill in any partial transfers. Letraset was awesome

  • @Chalor.
    @Chalor. 2 роки тому +7

    I just thought all of that was done by the art department on a PC. But all fluid curves of the symbols should've been a giveaway that they weren't created on no 1970's computer lol.

    This video just popped up in my recommended, and I'm glad it did. It's pretty cool that you guys were able to figure this out and recreate the font for others to use. I could see using this font for something like magic runes (which isn't too far off from how it was used in Star Wars, honestly); it has a very distinctive style that would offer a lot of contrast with other fonts that could also be used in a similar way. That way, you could have multiple types of runes, each with their own distinctive style. It's stylized enough that at a glance it would appear as random symbols, but you could hide Easter eggs in the text for those who look closely and notice that they're actually just heavily stylized Latin letters.

    when darth vader lines up his TIE with luke's x-wing, he says "i have you now" and shoots. but thats the thing: he shoots while his fighter is lined up and luke doesnt die or react to it.

      Luke’s shields were still strong at that point. With Biggs and Wedge having taking the hits, Luke’s fighter still had enough energy to protect its engines. Not a lot, seeing how R2 was heavily damaged, but it could still hold for a few more seconds. Without the last minute intervention of Han, Luke would’ve immediately get blown up
