I like almost all of the changes in the 1997 Special Edition. But the song in Jabba's Palace. 😑 Also at 13:30. The 1997 VHS versions are the only copies of Star Wars I can show at school (I teach Physics) since I don't have them on DVD and can't stream. I show over 100 kids those versions every year.
My least favorite special edition change is that god forsaken musical number in Return of the Jedi. It’s also probably the worst Star Wars scene of all time. I get embarrassed when I watch it with friends/family.
That's really a textbook example of how a poorly chosen piece of music can ruin a scene. Because I'd argue that the sequence itself (divorced from the song) actually improves on the original film, doing a better job of establishing the threat of the Rancor.
I like all the changes pretty much. They're the definitive way to watch the films. People forget there are no "original" versions. The ones that came out in theaters are different than the ones that came out on VHS.
Honestly, I think George Lucas would be the worlds best DM (guy who runs a DND game). No think about it, he's obsessed with world building and great at taking obscure, unimportant characters and building stories around them.
The changes I’m ok with are the minor things like fixing special effects that were outdated like the new dog fight scenes in ANH, and I’m ok with ROTJ having the expanded ending with the whole galaxy celebrating the fall of the Empire. The changes I don’t like are the ones that are more intrusive like all the CGI stuff added to Mos Eisley. Also Greedo shooting first, not because I think it violates Han’s character, but just for how petty Lucas is over this one scene changing it multiple times rather than just letting it be.
It's weird, but ROTJ has both my favorite and my least favorite changes in the same film. Victory Celebration? I love that. An epic, beautiful ending. The Jabba Palace song? Intolerably bad. The worst update in the history of updates.
It all depends on what was changed. For example I’m a big fan of Ian McDirmand in The Empire Strikes Back But Hate Vader’s “no!” In Return of the Jedi. Though the real issue is the lack of customization options. It would be cool if we could toggle the changes we do and don’t want
I really don't have an opinion about the OT movie versions, since I started my fandom w/ the Prequels. If I did have one about the movies in general tho, it would be that in hindsight the Ewoks defeating the Empire is super silly when you compare them to everything the stormtroopers fought before.
Least favourite special edition change ROTJ jabbas palace musical number. Favourite change is Emperor from TESB. Worst change to Episode over all is ANH, Moss Eisley there's to many added back ground characters & creatures walking across scene, Jabbas appearance & infamous Han shot first. Best change to Episode over all is TESB, Emperor, Wampa, Cloud City.
My least favorite change is the Blu Ray Krayt dragon call. Not only does it sound like a kidney stone scene from Seinfield, but also takes away nostalgia from the 2004 dvd version.
I'm in the middle of this topic, some scenes are needed edits others actively hurt the films. A good is the entire battle of Yavin 4, a bad one is Vader's no during the throne room scene.
Honestly, I don't really mind the changes in general. Some are silly, some are self indulgent, but they all come from the man who created this story. What I mean to say is, these aren't changes due to corporate mandate, this is an artist obsessively critiquing and modifying his own work. And honestly, that is why Lucas doesn't want to release the unaltered OT! He knows by now that the second he does that the SW fanbase will try to forget any of the special editions ever happened and they may some day be lost to time. Many people might consider the unaltered OT to be superior, but Lucas just doesn't. My point is, I like the special editions as a whole, not because of what they add or remove, but because of why they exist. Because Lucas is an artist. Oh and before you say it, Lucas had about a million ways to milk SW without the Special Editions (just look at the damn EU, you think Lucas didn't make bank off of letting every slightly talented nerd publish their SW fan fiction?), your not going to convince me he did it purely for profit without a direct quote from the man himself.
i like most of the changes, yes even vader's noooo, the added jabba scene and Maclunkey, I understand why George lucas put them in the first place, one of the only things that I don't like is the song in jabba's palace
I can tolerate any change (and even like some of them), except the Hayden ghost. I can not watch that movie, and let it end with that being the last thing I see. It leaves such a bad, bad, bad feeling about it, especially since it's the last thing you see in the movie, that I just can't do it. Give me any version that doesn't have that, and I'm happy. BTW I don't mind Hayden in the prequels. I just don't like that he's in ROJ. Just NO. Stay in the prequels my dude. You don't belong here.

Michael [Mandatory Last Name] The rancor additions I agree are good, but the CGI dancers...
@@bangobuck8722 Yeah, that's fair.
The thing is... that musical number was still in the original cut, and it was just as insufferable.

I've got Original Video released version of ANH & TESB on BetaMax but no video to play it on & ROTJ on VHS.

Glad I caught the stream!
I found the last pre-special edition release on VHS.
I have both 4K77 and 4K83 and they’re Incredible. Can’t wait for 4K80

I prefer Force Ghost Anakin change, to me it makes sense because it's when Anakin died...

Wow it’s empty
Maclunky. 🎤 drop.
Jedi Rocks is very very very very awful

I don't honestly care.
