Since you've been touting, bought and are recommending the Mazda 3, l'm giving that Hatch a second look. And since l'm getting older and don't challenge those "apexes" as l did in years past, the Torsion Beam Rear Suspension has lost its significance. So, that puts the Maz 3, the Prius and the Corolla Hatchback at the top of the list. (The HR-V Hybrid gets scratched).
    Thank you for your guidance.🙏

Picked up a Mazda3 in February and loving it. I wanted AWD so corolla wasn't an option, if I lived in a warmer climate I would have considered it. The Prius is fantastic as well but with demand/dealer markups it just wasn't worth it to me.

The 2024 Tesla Model Y received the "top safety pick +" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) after scoring near perfect in crash tests. The IIHS made the tests more stringent this year, but the Model Y still earned the highest possible score. The Model Y also has the highest IIHS rating for pedestrian safety.
The Model Y scored near-perfect results in the Adult Occupant Protection category, with an outstanding score of 97%. The highest score of any vehicle tested in this protocol.
Model Y received a leading score of 98 percent in Euro NCAP's Safety Assist category. This was thanks to Tesla Vision, the camera vision and neural net processing system that comes standard in all Tesla vehicles in North America and Europe.
In another win for Tesla, a test track video released by the voluntary car safety performance assessment program Euro NCAP showed that the Model Y outperformed all other cars tested in the safety assist category.

Vehicles can actually get a top safety pick award while failing one of the subcategories. It’s a little more stringent to get the top safety pick plus award. The CRV did great in most areas but super poorly in rear passenger safety (presumably a major concern for folks buying a CRV). There is a lot to parse with these awards. I don’t think reviewers generally do a very good job really explaining how it all works. I’m glad that C.H.C is at least highlighting the safety issue, which does seem to fall by the wayside altogether for most reviewers.

I use the Insurance Losses data and the Death Rate in Cars, both available from links on iihs site. Nothing wrong with looking at crash test data, but the real world is what we live in and hopefully don't die in before we have to. I suggest one looks at Korean cars real world data. Mazda is good, but look at Subaru's history, especially the Outback. It is very safe in the real world. In regard to electric cars, I don't want my house to burn-down, nor being trapped in a car which explodes --- no thanks!

    • @julesv2914

Good point. I heard someone tell once that there is a correlation of safety and the number of seats a car has. In other words, the more seats a car has the more likely driver will be in an accident. This may be skewed by younger drivers and that’s who I’m shopping for right now. I’m looking to find that data too.

There are numerous vehicle manufacturers that aren't mentioned in this review based on criticism and not including Euro NCAP which have vehicles that are also being sold in USA & Canada. In the aforementioned list he highlighted, I'd choose Toyota just because of the better reliability - but you have to stress w/the scandalous dealership sketchy sales tactics and learn to foot down say no to their ridiculous rip-off add-ons.

So Hyundai Elantra went from terrible ( real world death and injury rate ) to best in class? Interesting. Not impossible -- nothing is impossible. I will wait to judge the new entry once the real world data comes out for death rate in cars and insurance loss data before calling it a victory for Hyundai. It does sound promising -- we shall see if it holds true. So many cars fail in the real world, which show as safe when tested. Don't believe me, then look it up! Of course the modern day cars are all safer than those we drove decades ago --- We lived through that period, or I would not be typing this, and you would not be reading this.
