Over the 2017 Memorial Day weekend, Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 #611 pulled 3-days of excursions out of her hometown of Roanoke, VA. Operating over the original N&W mainline, #611 pulled 2 trips east to Lynchburg over the Blue Ridge grade, and 4 trips to Walton via the grueling Christiansburg Mountain grade. Here are a few highlights from the weekend, which were #611's last trips of the year.

Had the privilege of riding behind 611 on one of these trips. Such an amazing locomotive. Was kinda sad to ride past the VMT coming and going, seeing the 1218 sitting in the shed cold while the 611 ran free. Hope that one day they'll be able to run together again.

Shame 3 years later 611 stopped doing these mainline runs due to Amtrak. Maybe someday she'll be pulling mainline excursions once again

If I was born decades before my birth in 1966 I would have greatly enjoyed watching steam locomotives but I might have had some trouble with the smoke.
