611 Coming Home

- On May 30, 2015 the Norfolk and Western 611 triumphantly returned home under her own power to Roanoke, Virginia. Any rail fan that enjoys her sleek long tuscan red lines and bullet nose has been waiting for this moment for 20 years! Joining her on static display were 'The Big Three'. N&W Y6a 2156 and Class A 1218. This marks the first time in 56 years that these mechanical behemoths have been seen together.
It's wonderful to see this many people come out for this.
Great video. Obviously a joyous occasion.
isn't it amazing how the 611 can run on her own. yet the 2156 has to have a damned diesel push and pull it around

her new whistle sucks, the one back from 1992 is better, but at least now its a little like,GET OUT OF MY WAY but lets have a tea party first!

i like this whistle more, it has more blast and character to it, her other whistles sound wimpy compared to this
The whistle as it sounded in 1958 was best. There's a recording of it on You Tube. I don't think I'd go so far as to say the new one "sucks." Nothing about steam sucks!

From what I know the Claytor family still has her (original?) whistle; again from what I know they refused to put it back on 611 when there had to be changes done to 611. (changes that I may add were for safety reasons and to make the 611 FRA compliant)
I believe she wears a Hancock replica now.
