N&W 611 on the Old Fort Loops

- On April 10th, 2016, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, NC Transportation Museum, and Norfolk Southern teamed up to operate an excursion train from Spencer to Asheville and back. The star of the show was N&W 611, which would lead NS 8099 and SOU 6133 on the trip.
Of course, the route would take the train through one of the most legendary railroad engineering feats in the east: The Old Fort Loops. Built between 1875 and 1879 by a predecessor of the Southern Railway, the unique track structure ascends the Blue Ridge Mountains at a steady 2.2% gradient. In a three mile long stretch, the tracks loop back on themselves three times to maintain the steady grade and fit in a compact area of less than 1 square mile.
611 performed beautifully on the ascent, and we were there to capture the climb through the loops with our drone. In addition to our loops sequence, you'll find clips from Asheville and Old Fort on the return trip east. Enjoy!

In 1960 I rode a passenger train from New York to Asheville which used the Old Fort Loops. The train conductor took me to the platform on the caboose where we could see the Old Fort Geyser shooting a water spout. He explained there was only one geyser, but we would see it six or seven times. Can't remember which number is correct. Billy Graham's home in Montreat was also visible from the train. I was only nine years old at the time, but still have wonderful memories of the trip.
Old Fort, grades and curves, she's pulling like she means business! Your view looks like an N Gauge railway I'd love to have.
I want the 611 to do more excursions on Asheville just so I can ride it
NS lowered the speed limit and they can’t make the round trip in time now.

Not 100% sure but I thought I heard talk of a #FireUp1218 campaign somewhere. But don't quote me. I saw both the 611 & 1218 along with the 2156 at the VMT in Sept 2015.
What is the grade here, does anyone know? reminds me of Horseshoe Curve...
