@Ryanrobi I have been outside in the real world, I touch grass if that pleases your little ego. This world is overpopulated as is, and if the current generation is, do not learn from their own mistakes, and the mistakes of their predecessors, Then we should not be repopulating as much, or just pretend we've gone sterile, it's best not to bring new life into this world where there are more issues to deal with and adding more mouths to feed will only enhance that. The cost of living and the cost of even having a kid these days is rising, it's hard to afford, you might as well go broke at that point. I say it's best to let the population decline and the birth rate decline as well.
You won’t think it’s good news when you can’t find a doctor, repairman, police officer because there aren’t enough people, and the structures around you are falling apart because there isn’t enough tax revenue for the government to pay to fix it.
@Samuel-vw2wy You can blame the educational system across the USA for not pushing towards trade job education and blue collar opportunities, along with the wreckless spending of government funds, primarily for the US military bases and operations over seas. We need to focus on our own country and also get our people in line. The constant complaining and weakness of the focus groups, social justice "warriors," cancel culture groups, liberals, and other flawed idealists and groups are also to blame. Perhaps that's the wake up call the USA, along with other countries need to get their people to properly WAKE UP, stop with the stubbornness, lies, selfishness, lack of awareness and coherence, greed and complete idiocy that has been plaguing society. If the failures and depletions of our society doesn't help to educate and properly motivate our citizens to take action that benefits all and ensures our country's future well being, then we're doomed to fall hard and possibly die off. Interesting that she didn’t use the US as a country with minimal family support infrastructure. We have a crisis of dysfunctional children raised by dysfunctional families.
If a woman devotes her time and energy to work, she will have an income, be respected, and have no worries about food and clothing. But if she spends her time and energy on having and raising a child, what can she get? Is there financial compensation? No. Can she get respect from people around her? No. It will also damage her health and delay her career development. Only a fool would have a child and raise a child under such circumstances.
The people that will suffer for their government's greedy policies? the people who worked hard all their lives and deserve family time and rest... Why would I bring any children into a world where the only point is to make other people rich for 70-80 years?
Congratulations Dr. Jennifer Sciubba. I agree 100% with the idea that population decline is not a problem and can be the solution for the social and environmental progress of countries and the world....
We're still adding more than 80 million people every year. This is not a problem yet. Most places are suffering from too many people. See the air pollution in China, India, Pakistan, etc.
No one has realized the problem is simple: seniority. Once you educate women they get into careers. Have a child, though, and in almost all countries, your job goes poof. Your accumulated seniority? Gone. Here in Canada I observe a mini baby boom among the one group that does keep their job and their career: teachers. If Japan or Korea want to fix birth rates they have to mandate companies to guarantee the jobs and seniority of women who leave to have children. Nothing they are currently doing will work.
So, in basic terms, job security. No good or secure job = No house/rent even after years = I will not have a child because we can become homeless at any moment

The planet can sustain 6 billion people, we’re currently at 8 billion. There no danger in humanity dying out. This is about rich people wanting more wage slaves.
I get really tired of this conversation always focusing on women and their education. The simple reason is this: women need financial security to feel confident to have children. No financial security = No kids. Of all the women I know, only a couple do not want to have children. All the others want to have kids, but no partners or low finances acted as blockers.
It's creepy. Why do they have to tell us that we can't get a job and an education before we have kids? How do you think we're going to feed and house those kids without an income and understanding on the world around us?
The only people worried about population decline are the people hoarding money. The wealthy thrive off the working population. They would rather do everything to fix this "problem" except adjust their business structures or policies to include the working people in on the profits they produce. Children are expensive. They like to target the education of women as the problem when it's so much more than that. Most families cannot live off the income of one parent. Women have no choice but to work. Why don't we take a look at capitalism and historical rapid industrialization. I believe this is where we should start and make adjustments.
The reason why it is a crisis is because a burgeoning population is good for the portfolios of the 1%. It's not a crisis for all the other forms of life.
Governments don't pay for anything the people pay for everything. So if you want your government to pay you twice as much you need to make places much money can pay in taxes. The best way to reform it is to pay people based upon how many children they created, who are currently paying into the system. I’m 34 with three kids so far, and several of my cousins are choosing to not have kids. They also have much higher incomes than I do because they’ve chosen to not directly invest in the next generation. You can see the unfairness of watching peers go on more vacations, retire earlier, AND get larger payouts from social security, right?
It’s not unfair. It’s a result of your choices. Your cousins are already paying taxes to fund your children’s education and all other programs that benefit other people’s children.

Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor. Why import fossil fuels when wind and solar energy can be produced locally and solar energy can power electric vehicles. We need solutions not just sympathy.

One of the sad parts about everybody having far fewer family members is how small family gatherings are getting. I’m 34 and I am only child. Luckily, I got married and have three kids (we are hoping for 5-6 kids, eventually) but we are stuck doing holidays with cousins instead of siblings because none of my cousins has more than one sibling. It’s wild to think our children are distantly related enough (despite growing up together) they can technically get married .
Haven't you enforced birth upon your children. And also you have burdened them forcefully to live a HUMAN life. It is a burden they never asked for in the first place. Will you be suffering their physical or emotional sufferings?? It is them and only them all because of your foolish idea of existence.
What governments can do about this crisis? Actually make progress on all the things that seem to portend the end of the world as we know it. If governments worked to create a world that felt sustainable (wrangling matters of climate, technology, war and oppression, etc.), maybe people of child-bearing age would feel confident enough that there would be a worthy world left for their children to actually have them. Right now, it seems like a lot of those people aren't confident the world will last long enough for them to grow old much less to inspire bringing in a new generation. In the meantime, we need to recognize the current structure as the Ponzi scheme it is and find a new path forward...pronto!
I am a baby boomer, and I work as a software developer. I hope to work for another 20 years. Working, the act of getting up in the morning, getting ready for work, gets the blood flowing and the mind, active. Working in the older years is a life-saver for older people. Keep your skill sets sharp, keep your education relevant. Since employers are crying for employees, older people have more opportunities. For me, retirement is like signing my death-warrant .
That needs to happen is incentivized having children and families. Like reduce the cost of schooling for women with kids. Require companies to have babies at work sites, promote women who have kids. Make being married with kids an important career advancement issue in the work place. This going to have to be a culture change pushed by the government.
This woman talks a lot but says nothing. By immediately taking women's rights off the table but putting nothing else on it, she just puts the spotlight on the elephant in the room.

Big business still relies on growth in sales. If businesses don't grow, investors don't buy shares, or sell their shares. Any business that is in a mature market, how are they going to grow? Especially when you consider there're competitors in the same market space.
Institute artificial wombs to produce babies. Lots of women die in childbirth and have other complications. Low sperm counts from endocrine disruptions and visa versa for women. Women raise the kids, loose their jobs, financial security , and do the bulk of housework , cooking, dr visits, school events, stay home with sick kids if working, and basically are doing two jobs. Why would a woman choose this? No affordable childcare, no baby care until child age 2, and limited social security due to lost work years while raising kids. People can’t even afford to support themselves at this given moment and it’s been like this for years. There’s lots of talk on this topic, but nothing is ever done. It all comes down to. It’s your duty to your government or your nation. Guilt tripping women . They even refuse to sterilize women but will readily do a vasectomy on a man. So you can see this entire picture is out of balance . People are not dating, having sex, nor getting married and these are young people from like age 20-30. There are multiple stats on this. Now they are refusing abortions to bring the population numbers up. The technology sector could do this if they are doing it with premature babies at this point . Something to look at if this is a crisis.
According to UN data, the number of babies being born outside Africa peaked in 1990. These guys will hit retirement in the 2050s but by then a bigger problem could be mass crop failures in S. Asia due to climate change.
Only the people at the top complaining because a small population gives us more power, value and a better quality of life. In India theres so many people that despite putting loads of barriers in place (more qualification requirements), thousands apply for just 1 position. This surpresses wages. When there are fewer people for a job, like in the west, the same job positions pay more (in relation to living) and dont require the same qualifications, just evidence that you are able to do the job (and my experience with Indian colleagues is that they have many degrees and certificates but are not good at actually doing the job - this is from software engineer perspective)
I've listened to quite a few sociological, economic arguments to explain why people are having fewer kids. Toxins in our environment (plastics, phthalates etc ..) have been building up for decades and reducing sperm counts drastically.
I don't think you've ever been to a poor or developing country lol They have drastically more toxins and environmental pollution. Furthermore you Don't need millions of sperm to impregnate You just need one.
The systems we've created has made us sick and unhealthy. The FDA has been approving neurotoxins for decades that cause infertility. There's many other toxic chemicals we come into contact with every day that ruins our health. The corporations don't care, they're raking in record profits.

In 1983 UNICEF staff left a television behind in one of the villages by accident. Upon returning. Birth rates had already dropped by half. Everyone has had a little TV in thier hands now for almost 20 years.
Change culture and society view. For example: if my friends are not marrying (having children), why should I? If my parents had 1-2 children, why I should have more? What is it for me? If there were incentives to take on the responsibility and uncertainty of having kids... more people would do it... In the Agricultural age...we needed kids to work on the farm...natural incentive. Where is the incentive now that we are no longer in the Agricultural age? I predict this will be a bigger problem for women since they tend to live longer than men. Fast forward 100 years and the world will be one of millions of post menopausal...childless...never married women suffering any number of burdens due to fewer women choosing to work in the trades and infrastructure jobs. ..while the older men who did do those jobs..dying off and not being replaced because so few women decoded to get married and have kids.
When kindergarten spaces are empty but senior care spaces are in high demand, a logical choice is to appreciate older generations of their talents, skills and knowledge .... eliminate the cultural discrimination of ageism of hiring retirees so to replace the low population of young workers, and definitely offer the highest financial supports in parenting families so they can have babies.
Responsible governments will accept that degrowth will be positive for workers and the ecology generally, and that population contraction should be managed by incentivizing later retirement and better health overall.
She mentions Singapore. In Singapore the gov regulates housing and only married couples can apply for gov subsidized housing for affordable price. They prevent ppl from selling properties for a huge profit and keep a lid on housing prices.
You will never get old people to vote for later retirement and less medical care from the government, therefore the only way in a democracy is to have more kids at about replacement level. Seriously is their any country that has had old people vote against their personal interests?
It’s an evolutionary biology issue. Women globally have shifted from indirect resource production through their husbands to direct resource production. Both men and women prioritize survival through accumulation of resources, and as long as women directed that through a man, families formed and children were born. The Industrial Revolution began decreasing the value of children to the male as children became net costs instead of net assets. Moving the male’s work to a factory in exchange for a paycheck eliminated the female’s ability to support the male’s resource production. That collapsed the value of the female in the coupling, which then in turn collapsed cooperative coupling between men and women, which then reduces birth rate. Women working is a response to the underlying issue. But the headline here is this: the human species may not reproduce when the male and the female are both individually pursuing resource production instead of the female indirectly pursing through the male. It’s an evolutionary biology issue. The female has never in the history of humanity sought and achieved direct resource production as they are doing today, and as a result, cooperative coupling is collapsing. We can’t fix it.
If there is woman who has 8 kids, and 3 people who have none, when the 4 retire they each will take their share of the payroll taxes of the now adult children which maybe is 20% each (so 20% x 8 is 160%/4 is 40% of current wages paid as retirement). The mother who did the work should get 160%.. . .. . I admit everyone pays property taxes for schools and families do get some tax breaks, but its the $100,000 a year of unpaid labor of wiping butts and yelling at kids that is the main contribution the parent makes. We should say childless people do not get social security and medicare. Anything else is robbing from parents.
If you provide the economic benefits of childbearing to women, fewer men will marry. That is what is happening now. And if men don’t marry, fewer children get conceived and born. The fundamental problem is that children ceased being an economic benefit TO THE MALE of the species, and then as the female sought “partnership” model marriages, it further depressed the value of the female in the union TO THE MALE as the “partnership” model requires the male to shift from resource production to support of the female. That is the crux of the problem. There is no basis in human evolutionary history for the male supporting the female’s direct resource production. You can shift all sorts of public funds to women all you want, but that will not create any marriages. In fact, there is a ton of evidence that state handouts to women INCREASE divorce rates. Finland tracks this quite well. Paying women for their role in childcare would be a catastrophe as that would result in no additional children, while increasing divorces. The fundamental problem is that women shift to resource production when they are not able to rely on male resource production, and since the value of children collapsed, the male is disincentivized to cooperate. This puts women in a bad spot, having lost their ability to align their reproductive strategy with their resource strategy through the male, they are seeking to achieve it directly. And in doing so, marriages collapse as there is no incentive for males to marry.
There is a way ...stop having woman do direct accumulation. It doesn't work well for woman anyways they are all very anxious and depressed because of the stress it takes. My wife never has to work unless she wants to much happier because of the lower stress.
@@RyanrobiWomen can’t just stop. They are switching to direct resource accumulation because the value of the children they create to the male has collapsed, and so the risk to them of the cooperative model is too high. Additionally, too many males are refusing to enter the deal since the bargain to them has historically been the children and the wife’s participating in his resource production, which no longer works. As a result, some women are attempting to create synthetic value through overt sexualization and others are switching to direct resource production (or using sexualization to create resources, unfortunately). We may be able to put social/cultural norms in place that push the female to prioritize the cooperative model, but we cannot solve for the underlying problem that the children and her labors are no longer additive to the male. Eventually, however, the institutions required to support female direct resource production will degrade and collapse as a result of female participation in them (see, e.g, the ongoing collapse of education), which will result in a massive imbalance.
People always bring women’s education and access to family planning into this topic… Let’s imagine we will ban abortion and the education for women and change nothing else. Will the men be happy to support women and all the children? Don’t see many young men dreaming of becoming a head and supporter of large family nowadays. What’s in it for men apart from regular sex life, that women are unable to support themselves and cannot help with financially supporting the children. Back in the feudal days women brought dowry’s and majority of the population lived rurally. Birthrates are dropping not because of women’s access to education but because because majority of people live in big cities. Calhoun’s experiment with rodents illustrates well that population will not grow if space is limited, even if all other needs are met.

If this happens, so be it, humanity can be seen as an infectious cancer anyways.

You're absolutely right
Wealth is too concentrated at the top, those people can only have so many kids. You want growth you are going to have to tax the sheet out of corporations and the wealthy and provide massive support to the poor.
@@sumdude4281 It's not money for the 1 million time, poorest people have the most kids by far the people who have the fewest are the top 20% income only when you get to the .001% do you see fertility rate go back up. Almost 20 years ago (back when i was still in middle school) I read a book about this by Mark Steyn called "America Alone". People have been talking openly talking about this for decades. These population decisions were made 40 years ago now. We've had all the Data to show this coming population collapse since the 1990s. It's INSANE how behind our media and politicians are that they are JUST NOW talking about this.
To be fair, they've known it long enough re the West with its feminism and all that. The assumption was that the rest of the world would keep growing....
But things come up all the time. It's easy to talk about things when hindsight is on your side. You don't also remember talks about overpopulation in the 90s? Y2K? Imagine if that were happening right now, you'd be saying the same thing, "Why haven't we been doing anything about this we've been talking about it for decades!" lol. Well lets see. People get paid $3000 barely surviving and then houses are $300-500k each. College is 100k for 4 years. Daycare is $2000 per mth. How are the younger generation going to have kids? Work to their bone for $3000 and barely surviving to pay bills and debts. No one in their right mind say yes, lets bring more kids to repeat this hamster life.

The problem is that there will be far to many old people in the future are not producing but consuming vast amounts of resources and our social safety nets are paying as you go systems that require more younger people than older people.
Totally agree with csizzle. Also women fed up with being left to deal with it all.

Interesting 🤔 since western woman by far do the least child care of any society in history and have the fewest kids.
Yup, the capitalist class needs more consumers and workers it's a problem for them. Except they don't want to pay the taxes to support growth

The reason why it is a crisis is because a burgeoning population is good for the portfolios of the 1%. It's not a crisis for all the other forms of life.

Having children is a job. Goverments need to pay 2 full salaries. If they want children. Otherwise we are wise!
Governments don't pay for anything the people pay for everything. So if you want your government to pay you twice as much you need to make places much money can pay in taxes. If governments worked to create a world that felt sustainable (wrangling matters of climate, technology, war and oppression, etc.), maybe people of child-bearing age would feel confident enough that there would be a worthy world left for their children to actually have them. @@julianeyhart6219 at some point, that will go out of the window because the whole world is not having kids
@@amyself6678exactly correct, childless people figured out how to game the system to pay out more than they put in.
Why would men want children when the laws can just rip your children from the fathers during divorce which women initiate 70-90% of the time
If the planet is not overpopulated, then why am Iiving in an overpriced shoebox?
People always bring women’s education and access to family planning into this topic…
Let’s imagine we will ban abortion and the education for women and change nothing else.
