  • @magnusm4

I had to teach myself an insane amount of things to learn to learn.
1: Epiphany: Stressing about using your time on a useless task instead of something practical. We spend more time doing nothing than we actually do doing something. So I wanted to try some origami, but I thought that I could spend it on more important things. What? youtube? news? appetizer cooking. Nah you waste your time all the time.
2: Nothing: Doing nothing is harder than doing anything. Spend time to not think about anything, no schedule or timed work.
Getting a moment to empty your head and not have to worry about anything.
3: Self degradation: This is actually just my friends and class mates but I just feel people need to understand. Maturing and getting older DOES NOT MEAN BEING BUSY ALL THE GOD DAMN TIME!
Oh I have dinner to cook, go to work, study, go out with friends, go to this meeting with my friends, travel to this place etc.
It pisses me off that everybody intentionally try to make their entire life empty of free time and lie.
Some say to me they don't have time to stretch, meditate or do yoga. SO you're telling me you don't have 10 fucking minutes to do anything at all. Do you also have a planned schedule of when to go fuck yourself or when you're gonna die?
Oh no I can't, in 54 years i'm gonna be on my death bed so no I can't meet you then maybe some other time.
If you don't have at least 2 hours free then you're doing everything wrong.
4: Motivation: My mother was a teacher until she had a stroke, so she knows how to teach and she told me:
Even if you don't have any practical use in work for chemistry or advanced multiplication but it will sit in your subconscious and even when you're not using it, the way of thinking sticks and is used all the time and develop your way of thinking. It sticks in your head even if you don't directly do math. So learning anything means always gaining.
5: Vary and new things: You talk about habits and breaking cycles are a good way of getting better at your work. Do something new, play a new sport, do a new exercise, play a game of solitaire or something you haven't done before like my Origami. Doing the same thing over and over without varying isn't as efficient.
6: I have vacation days?! You mean I can leave anytime I want and not get yelled at over the phone?:
Another thing my mother taught me was a trick to prepare for tests. Don't study or work at all about it the day before the test.
If you leave it then you let your studies sink in and your brain will organize and memorize it. You knew jackshit during the tests and during lessons, but a year later you can recite the entire chapter at the back of your hand.
People study all the time before a test and stress over it. But it's better to not do anything than try to learn more. If college students were taught to do this it would be like the second coming of christ all over universities and colleges.
7: A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body "Soul Eater": As you said, exercise, and as I said, self degradation. When working it's best to have a calm mind and state, not interfering with any other thought and be in control of your self and your actions. By exercising you get your blood pumping, this in turn release adrenaline in the brain and makes the brain work. Same with food. eating good and feeling well promote productive mind set and a positive mind for thinking and thought.
Keeping yourself healthy and active promotes nothing but positive results. And if you are too busy to exercise or stretch as I said, then you're doing life wrong and must start over cause you messed up big time

Hmm so if I want to break the habit of procrastinating, should I start with reading Hard Work, the Power of Habit or the Productivity Project?

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  7 років тому +28

Deep Work is much more specific about STAYING focused, so if that's your problem, read that first. If you have other procrastination problems, then maybe start with The Productivity Project.

Great book list, but I'd usually prefer to watch your synopses. I get bogged down by too much detail. People talk way too fucking much. I'd like to believe those authors don't, but I sincerely doubt it.

Funny how none of the books you propose can serve a student of real life insight or culture. These books are a result of someone's OPINION about a certain THEORY that treats just SOME aspects of PRODUCTIVE LIFE. How about you use your reach and power to promote real culture through books that can infuse people with emotions, dilemmas, opinions, a critical vision of the world or a sense of never conforming for just anything? There are literally thousands of real books waiting out there to be read and teach us lessons and you propose self-help trash. Sometimes I wonder what kind of culture American people really have.

Your recommandations are so cool. I discovered your channel yesterday when I seeked about some motivational videoclips. I found your work here and I was astonished. Now I have another books that I really want to read which is awesome because I only read fiction. You are such an intelligent guy because your confident speech in front of camera made me wanted to try another sort of books. Keep up the smarter, not harder work!
