      Charles Akpan its totally worth it! going to the sallon! I was living a lie and didnt even know it! My locs made a 180 turn after going to a professional! To be fair though im carribean and "hang around " alot of carribean" so it wasnt hard to find a verry good loctician ( affordable, patient, passionate).
      i pay around 40 dollars every 2 months! Style and wash included when i see her ! I made my own locs , took care of them the first year and felt tdamn proud but if i could start over id let my loctician do the pattern decide the right size etc lol

      I pay $100 every 6 weeks for wash, retwist, and style. Everything is OD expensive in Manhattan so I'm just used to it now. Lol.

    The main reason I maintain my hair myself is that I am very sensitive to negativity and do not want negative people touching my head...or any part of me for that matter.

    The day I figured out that I could maintain my own locs I cried. I was so overwhelmed with joy, freedom, and empowerment. All of the sadness and frustration that I encountered with my hair was now gone. No products, no high costs, or misrepresentation. I love it and I love this video

    For me, it's everything you said plus 'vibes'. Some people have negative aura about them. They put their hands into your hair and it starts to break and/or thin out afterwards.

    So true! My locs were started by a stylist. When I went to the stylist I explained exactly what I want it when I was looking for. The stylist didn't follow any of the directions that I gave. Although I have learned to love the locks that I've grown I don't trust hairstylist with my locks. It is highly overpriced and expensive and I like the freedom of doing my own hair and being in control of what happens to my hair!....Great video❤️

    I hate wasting my day on beauticians with poor time management skills. I have very thick locs and usually it takes me 2 hours to interlock my hair. I made one appointment to get my hair done at 9 a.m. I got there at 830 so that we could get it over with. The stylist came strolling in at 1045. I sat in her chair and she had the audacity to tell me her 11 o'clock client was there and she could take me after. So that was the end of that.

      Tyffies Universe that's how my mom's friend was that used to do our hair when I was in middle school and had a relaxer. I frikkin hated getting my hair done. We were the the whole frikkin day. For two people. But everyone else working there is getting done with like 5 -7 clients in that time. She's running back out to the car to get nutrilizer shampoo while I'm sitting in the chair with my scalp burning. I almost always had a chemical burn patch in my head cuz of her but my mom insisted on going to her. I had was sick of her sh** and learned to do my perm myself then I went natural when I went to college. Been natural and doing my hair myself since 2009. I'm bout ready to loc it now. I pretty much just wear Marley twists now. I only take them down to retwist

    I have over 200 locs. When I was moving from NY to MA, my original hair stylist (that was interlocking my small locs) was also sister loc certified and suggested I find a new stylist that is also sisterlock certified. It worked out! I don't go to a salon to get it done, but that's where I met her. Now I just go to her house. It worked out for me because there is no way im doing my interlocked locs. Growing up being raised by my Haitian mother, getting hair done was a treat. But now, I'm grown woman...I do what I want 😄.

    I go to someone for my loc maintenance every 6 weeks and I do my own shampoos and styles in between. When I was relaxed and a loose natural, I almost never went to a salon. (I would go for cornrows and then come home and put in crochet weave.) I like going to someone to save time- some people with Sisterlocks who self maintain say they spend a few hours each day for 2-4 days to retie. No thanks! I have a special needs child- I pay for the convenience of getting in/out of an actual scheduled-no-one-in-the-chair-but-me appointment. That being said, I applaud you for maintaining your own hair and that does generate a wonderful sense of pride and autonomy! Thanks for sharing your perspective!

    I agree with all your reasons, Joyce! I started my locs basically on my own (a friend of mine helped with parting and twisting in the back) and have maintained them ever since. Not only is taking care of my own hair something I enjoy, but I like being able to say that my hair is my own work. it's like a self-love project

  • @peaches5216
    @peaches5216 7 років тому +3

    Thank you Joyce! I've had "hair autonomy" for decades now. Salon visits are a treat for sure. I just started my loc journey 3 weeks ago and I started my locs myself after months of research and years of wanting to have locs. I love the empowerment of being in control of me and doing it myself. I have 108 baby locs...started on 17 inch long hair. I started with 2 strand twists that I braided at the top and bottom to keep them secure. I love this journey...I know its just begun, but Im truly enjoying this experience. Thank you for being such a wonderful inspiration. You are so encouraging, knowledgable, and generous with your knowledge. Ive been watching your vids for a few months now and always look forward to hearing your offerings. Thank you Joyce!

    Wow, you articulated that really well. I think this is also true for me. I cut my first set locks thinking I'd wear my hair in a teeny weeny fro for the rest of my life, but I enjoy tapered cuts. My hair grows fast. I did not feel coordinated enough to cut my own hair and hated going to the barber shop every two weeks. I hated having to go to the shop and trying to make them understand what I wanted, and being frustrated whether it was my fault or theirs when I didn't get what I wanted. I missed being fully autonomous. I also hated fighting my hair which wants to be long with the frequent cutting. My hair is locked again and I couldn't be happier.

    Once my locs mature I'm saving my coins and retwisting my own hair, but I definitely want the stylist who started to lay a foundation down for me. I just want to go to a stylist by choice for styles in the later future. Hating hair salon, especially black hair salon culture is one of the biggest factors that pushed me to going natural.

    I agree with all your reasons, but I'll add one, time. I don't have time to wait to be next. They always double book and don't respect your time. I started my locs and I love doing my own hair! I'm 21 months in and I love the journey. I love your videos!!

  • @CrizzX

    I'm enjoying these walk and talk vids 😁 So I appreciate your reasons but don't forget, some people go to the salon/barbershop for the community experience. I truly do miss barbershop talk from when I used to get hair cuts!
    I, like you, also self maintain my locs. I do it because of money and the quality time spent with my hair. I feel like it's a therapeutic process when I interlock my hair. I go see my stylist once or twice a year to freshen my parts 😄

    • @Bindi_Marc

    Hair autonomy was such a freeing experience for me, during my first set while in college even with still unpacking my own self loathing of having texture. Even now being essentially free form and not touching up my locs in a traditional way since December is another level of freedom. I see a salon visit as a treat now, or something I would do to get a check up like an annual check up. I also love that I'm not completely dependent on the "products" that I use. I love Dr. Bronners but if I ever moved to a place that didn't have it or I couldn't get it mailed to me I could make it work and still have healthy hair

    When my hair was relaxed I remember explaining to my husband that going to the "shop" was a bill. Not a "treat". I can say I really miss the salon. I liked the care and the pampering. I like my low maintenance locs, and wish I could find someone who can do my hair now, but like you the cost, and fear of someone messing up all of my hard work is just terrifying.

  • @missnelle922
    @missnelle922 7 років тому +7

    I can totally relate. I started doing my own relaxers at 17 and almost every time I would treat myself to going to a salon, I had a bad experience. One of those bad experiences eventually was the reason I went natural. Plus, I always could do my own hair so I didn't believe in paying someone to do what I could do myself. Now I have sisterlocks and it has been hard for me to let go of those dollaz when it is time for retightenings, just for the simple fact I know I can do it myself. I just don't want to make the commitment to the time it takes doing it yet. Also, it's hard relinquishing control to someone knowing my past experiences... Already my FIRST reti resulted in my parting getting messed up! Eventually, I will def start self retightening. And lastly, I've heard of salons only retightening the outer areas of the head and styling the locs, so the client doesn't realize the middle was never done smh. It's hard to find beauticians you can really trust.

    • @ToLovelyJesus
      @ToLovelyJesus 7 років тому +4

      PhoeJay123 I also went natural because of a bad salon experience. The stylist burned my scalp with the relaxer, and then she cut my hair waaay too short. I was like, "I'm done, natural it is..."

  • @coolbreeze730

    I completely agree with you. I went to a salon to start and maintain my locs but when I re twisted it myself for the first time, I never went back. It feels great to see the growth and health in something you cultivated, you take pride in it. However, I will still go to the salon to color my hair. I've never done it before so I'd rather go to a pro I know.

    Great vid. I agree with all of it. I got sisterlocks...317 locs to be exact...after the first retightening with my loctician I was over having to depend on anyone to do my hair. Plus you sometimes have to put up with judgement and bad attitudes from people in your hair. I learned how to do it online....have never looked back since. I love my hair. I don't want anyone in my hair except for me.

  • @ibokeshola2502
    @ibokeshola2502 7 років тому +1

    I love watching your videos cos they're so down to earth.
    The 3 reasons you gave are part of my reasons too which also is from past experience. Added to this I try to keep my locs as natural as possible which is my #1 reason. I t4 don't even palm roll my locs but separate and keep them tidy. And I use only as near natural oils as poss. This has made my locs really blossom over the last 5 yrs (I've been locking over 7). Considering I almost lost quite a few locs due to palm rolling. I also colour my locs with 100% natural henna which is a 2 day process and can't be done at most loc salons which are probably far from where I live. And I don't always plan in advance to wash or colour my locs which again I can't do at a salon.
    I'll t4 say keep up whatever works for you without feeling the need to justify it (I don't think you did anyway). Afterall locs are suppose to be natural which is near impossible to achieve at a salon!

  • @wearesibz
    @wearesibz 7 років тому +10

    I've never heard of salons doing that to their clients. Thats flat out incredible that someone would have the guts to cheat people out like that..
    For me I grew up with three aunts who were all hair stylists, so the only people who ever did my hair was family. So my main reason for not going to a salon is that someone I don't know is touching my hair, even if they are skilled. However, in a couple days I am going to Yannie the Locologist which is super exciting. She's not a salon but she seems very knowledgeable and I put my trust in what she can do!

    I agree with all of your reasons. Hair autonomy is the biggest reason for me. There's such a freedom in having my hair in my own hands. I love the accountability and self sufficiency that comes with it. Before I went natural, I could count on one hand how many times I'd washed my own hair. I was on the every two weeks, wash, set routine. I actually don't mind spending money on salons but it becomes a different story when you become a slave to the salon.

  • @Chellesokawaii
    @Chellesokawaii 7 років тому +5

    Agreed. I have over 200 locs now and my hair is getting a lot longer so it will cost way more in salons to maintain. I also have trust issues. I always do my own hair even before the locs. I always go by the maxim: If I mess up my own hair, at least I did it for free instead of spending money for someone else to mess it up LOL

  • @jamiliahbowen1342
    @jamiliahbowen1342 7 років тому +4

    I agree with all three reasons but the last one hit the nail on the head. I'm mixed. I'm brown but I don't have afro-centric hair. My curl patterns vary between a 2A and a 3B across my head. So at first no one bat an eye at my locs because they were still messy and new. But now (six months in), everyone is telling me to go to a shop because they are comparing my locs with someone with kinky, coily hair. I've taken pride in my hair, taken pride in letting it do it's own thing. But people are so hung up on them being perfect and uniform when my hair wasn't even uniform in the first place lol. Great video, I feel a lot better about doing my own hair and sticking with it.

    We must do what makes us happy. I'm so over the hair conversation of what is appropriate or not. It's hair out of my scalp deal with it. I'm now loc'ed (sisterlocks) and will have to go to a salon until I learn to reti myself especially once they are mature.
    Love your vlogs.

    I myself do not go to salons. A year ago a chopped off my hair and promised myself I would embrace my natural hair and be responsible for the care and maintenance of it no matter how challenging. The first year I fell in love with my natural 4c hair with all of its kinks,coils and knots. Yes!!!! Then one year to the day of my big chop I interloced my hair by myself. It took three days. And I absolutely love it. I have close to 525 locs. This past year has been the first time in my life that I have personally cared for my own hair. I feel liberated and proud of this hair on my head. I will not allow someone that has not been on this journey with my hair whom has no investment in the care of my hair to handle it. I have already re-tightened my locs twice since initially installing them. Each time it only took 2-4 hours. So I say NO to salons. I never knew I had such beautiful hair until I began doing it myself. I would not trust a stranger in my hair either after looking at the results I have achieved with my own hands. I only spritz in the morning with destilled water, extra virgin olive oil and a light leave in conditioner. My hair is the healthiest it has ever been in my entire life of going to salons and it is growing like crazy. Something it never did when I used salons. Just something to think about Ladies!

    I totally agree with the autonomy. I have been natural 12.5 years and I went to a salon for a few months, until I wasn't happy with a style and she did not want to redo it. From that point, I began doing my own hair. I did have a period where I was a straight natural, so I went to the salon to get it straightened on a regular basis, because I was tired of doing it myself. I went to someone I knew and trusted. Once I learned about heat damage, I stopped straightening my hair and going to the salon. As for trust, I have heard stories of naturals going to a salon and they secretly put relaxer in their hair. My own experience a stylist (a friend of my brother) asked to color my hair. I agreed to blonde highlights and no cut. He dyed all of my hair blonde and cut my hair into a bob. I haven't been to a salon since. Now I am almost 5 months loc'd and maintaining them myself. Out of all my years being natural, I accumulated a year in salons the other 11 was all me. I love maintaining my own hair. Nobody knows my hair like me and I can trust myself. Great video, tfs.

    I agree with you on trust. I feel like I've worked through this struggle of becoming and loving my natural hair. An outsider might destroy all I've built in one failed visit. I also enjoy maintaining my locs and even more so the "not maintaining" them. It's like a freedom I give myself everyday.

    This is so empowering! I go and get my locs retwisted roughly every 4 weeks but only because I haven't truly taken the time to learn how to retwist on my own. I love how you explained the experience of basically being empowered to care for your own hair without depending on a salon. I completely understand what you mean about the comments people say about you not wanting to go to a salon. My true reasons for not wanting to go to a salon is the typical gossiping environment and the money hungry scams I've experienced. Thank you for the video.

  • @Quirky1128

    I first got my locs because I was tired of having to depend on other people to do my hair. They were never available when I needed or wanted my hair done and it was pricey. A year after getting my locs installed, I took over the maintenance. It was fantastic although I was worried that I was messing up my hair. Almost 7 years into my loc journey I have only been to a salon a handful of times. Usually once a year for my birthday to get some fancy style that I can't do. I "treat" myself with salon visits now and will continue to but I completely understand where you are coming from.

    I enjoyed this video. I totally agree 100 percent. I'm a lose natural. Thinking about locs in the future..I'm very good at taking care of my natural hair which is growing and healthy. But I need to learn how to style more... I normally just do twist and a pony tail with braid in the front.. lol I enjoy doing my own hair.. and not paying any one because some of these stylist don't do right.. then I hate when people suggest a style or say you can put a little hair on top.. I wear weave every blue moon nothing wrong it but I enjoy my natural hair and I'm happy with it.. I can't afford to go to the shop.. I'm more concerned a bout growth and the health of hair. And I love your channel and locs you are a beautiful natural woman

  • @somethirdplace
    @somethirdplace 7 років тому +2

    I agree with all of your reasons. I've literally never had a 100% successful salon experience. My hair never thrived under the care of a beautician. It did thrive when I took matters into my own hands and I learned as I went. I've been wanting to install my own locs for some time now. But it's crazy how, even with the knowledge that my hair has been at its best under my care, I'm scared I'll mess it up. I've been natural for almost a decade and my regimen is a simple one with natural products. But after watching all these videos with contradicting advice about locs, I find myself getting overly concerned with perception, with looking unkempt, being seen as unprofessional in my work environment, and the fundamental possibility of ruining my hair. Mold, dryness, breakage, thinning roots...I'm scurred. But I want so badly to loc my hair. And I don't want to give my autonomy away for the sake of looking a little more put together during those beginning stages as my hair buds and matures.

    It's interesting, I went to a salon all of 6x when I was loose natural for years. And then I loc'd and it's like pulling teeth to get me to palm roll my own hair; I'm faithful to my stylist. Not sure why I don't like caring for my locs, but would spend hours detangling and two strand twisting my loose hair.

      lhamilt Same! When I had loose natural hair, I went to a salon once to get it styled for graduation. Now that I have locs, I see my loctician every 5-6 weeks faithfully. • @wintermoto12
    @wintermoto12 7 років тому +1

    The interlocking for expediency thing happened to me, not because of number of locs, but because the stylist said my hair texture is "not loc ready". I don't prefer the interlock look on me, and did not know at the time what interlocking was. The huge difference between the pattern left behind and previous palm rolling looked strange to me and never resolved in some locs. I often leave the chair feeling gypped of time (it does not take 8 hours) and feel like I do a better job (quicker/softer/more touchable/neater) by myself.
    Nowadays I freeform, so no stylists anyways!

    2 reasons. Money, time. I retwist my hair while watching a movie and keeping an eye on my kids. If had to go to the salon I would have had to pay for baby sitting. And the wait at the salon even when you have an appointment.....I certainly don't miss that.

    I agree. I have trust issues as well. I'm afraid to get my edges snatched out and of product build up. You've now opened my eyes to people combining locs without notice. I too have a lot of locs and would not want this to happen. I've been to a salon once on my journey and mainly because I thought there was something I had done wrong starting my locs because I wasn't originally locing my hair but instead wearing the style and re-twisting every couple of weeks. Once I decided to loc my hair, I inquired at a natural hair salon and agreed to correct my edges which were not falling the correct. Though I'm grateful of the correction, I left with a lot of product in my hair which I did not like. So much so that it looked like conditioner on my hair that I needed to wash out. As a result, my edges are fixed now but I'll be maintaining my own hair for now on.

    Wow, you just gave the EXACT THREE REASONS why I don't go to a salon either!! Year two of being natural I spent sooooo much money every three weeks so that someone else could maintain my hair. This also meant there were days when my hair was looking frugly because, as you said, I didn't have the money, trust, or autonomy. Next time someone asks me again why I do my own hair, I'm going to send them your video.

    good morning queen. I have been to some really beautiful salons in the past was really beautiful, knowledgeable stylist but I don't go anymore because I really don't like the tight Twisted look. I do however miss going to the salon because I love to be pampered. I wish I could find a salon that catered to semi free formers. so in my ideal world I would go and they would clarify my scalp and put a herbal rents on it and then just put me in the chair and massage my scalp and just lightly separate. I haven't found a place like that.

    Joyce I have always, for the most part, done my own hair. When I wore my hair permed I usually did them myself. I trimmed my own ends and went to the hairdresser only if I wanted a real cut. I also colored my own hair. When I started wearing my hair natural I was the wash and go queen - literally. Get in the shower, wash/condition hair, towel dry, comb through a curling gel (or sometimes just leave in the conditioner) and go. Locks set 1 required a loctition because it was done with some extra hair became I wanted coiled locks and my hair was too soft. Although I washed and retwisted it myself. 1 1/2 years later I took them out and back to wash and go with an occasional salon press and curl. 7 or so years after first set of locks, I'm on set 2. Installed by a Sisterlocks consultant, but I did not want the smaller locks, so she installed them as microlocks, since I have so few (236). I go every 5 to 6 weeks for my retightens. I still wash, style my own. I told my consultant I will go to her or some consultant forever for reties because I cannot be bothered with all this hair. LOL For me it is a pleasure thing. I have friends with way more SLs than me and they do their own. Maybe one day, I am almost 8 months in and just have no desire. Fortunately I don't have to worry about her combining my locks, she has way more than me and doesn't mind doing them. Fortunately I live in the Detroit metro area, where loctitions and SL consultants abound.

    Hi Joyce! I love these walk & talk videos. I've always gone to a salon until I was loose natural. I then went to salon again when I had my first set of locs started. I wasn't confident that I could start or maintain them myself. After having my locs for 5 years, I cut them for various reasons but soon after regretted it and grew my hair out again. I went back to my loctician and had her re start my locs. However there is a twist, because I'm overseas, I can't go to her on a regular basis and I don't trust anyone else with my locs, I've been maintaining them myself for the last 7 months until I go back to the states for vacation and then for good next year. I'm actually proud of myself of well my maintenance has been going. So I can see both sides. I do prefer going to my loctician though for the maintenance and the overall pampering experience. I normally go between 4-6 weeks so it's not bad. Great post as always.

    I also maintain my braidlocks myself for the same reasons. I went to a braiding salon for the initial installation of the mini braids. I had a horrible experience with the stylist being lazy and shady by not respecting my request on how I wanted my hair parted as well as the size I wanted them to be. She then went on to over charge me for a half assed job, as if she had given me sisterlocks or something! I ended up leaving very distraught and unhappy when I realized I could have done a better job myself. I never took the braids down because I felt if I did I would be throwing away the money I spent so, I simply prayed to The Most High and ask him to help me love and appreciated my "imperfect" locks. However, I did go in later and split a few of them myself. But, from the day I left that salon, I vowed I would never go to a salon again. Fast forward after 10 months of self-maintaining I'm completely in love with my hair!😊

    Girl!! I feel the exact same way!! I used to get my hair done at the salon till I moved out my aunt's house. I went natural and learned how to do my own hair. I love it and now I'm going to turn my hair into locs. I've been debating if I should go get it done but then I keep coming back to the thought that I don't trust these people out here to treat my hair with care and loc it the right way. So I'm going on the journey of doing it myself. Im in full agreement of hair autonomy because no one is going to care for your hair like you do. Hello!!

  • @rifatherapper
    @rifatherapper 7 років тому

    I agree with you about the three reasons you don't go to salons. I started my locs in May with about 200 locs and the stylist who started them complained about giving me the number I have and for the next retwist also complained about it. Even though I maintained my first set of locs, I didn't feel confident to maintain starter locs despite her poor attitude so I returned for my second retwist.
    Since moving away and having less disposable income do get help in the starter loc phase, I've done my past couple retwist and I love the autonomy. I was used to doing my own hair in its loose state so it's not too much of a challenge...it does take a long time since they're immature locs but it's worth the financial savings and having the peace of mind about how my hair is being maintained.

    I so love your comments on Pro/cons of going to a salon. I was saying Yes to all the way. My mother told me to always be self-sufficient in all things, but this was her stand the most on my Hair. She would say "Heddalynn, don't go to those hair salons all your hair will fall out". Or she would say, " don't let anyone put grease in your head all your hair will fall out". Ok, so many of us have grown up trying to prove our mothers wrong, or maybe it was just me. The backstory of my family was not told the true story of origin for many years. So there you are trying to fit in looking like a fool. Well, after the birth of my child time is limited. So off I go to my first salon, oh I met a wonderful woman became a dear friend over the years. She tried to relax my hair but said your hair does not want to relax, the curls just keep coming back. She said; and I should have listened to her, " Maybe you should just leave it Natural, you have beautiful Hair". Ok, 25 years later and many salons later, many times of losing my hair over the over processing that was done to my hair. Then sickness and cancer, I was done, told I was going to die more than on one occasion. I was like if I live through this, the last thing I will do is have healthy locks. I am happy to say, first of all, I should have listened more carefully to the words of my Mother, be self-sufficient and get to know your roots and do your own Hair. I am not telling People out there not to go to a hair Salon at all, but try to get to know your inner roots better it really is empowering. Sorry for leaving such a long post. Namaste to all. Peace!

    I'm a loctician/beautician. I felt soooooo sorry for my clients who couldn't do their hair or their daughter's hair, I tried to give them breaks on their prices but I was still expensive, and I'd always say, she needs to learn to do her own hair! We have ALWAYS been able to take care of our own hair and you're probably coming out better. I personally had beautiful hair until I started using crap taught to me at eurocentric beauty schools while earning my licenses. I've since gone back to naptural hair care. I gave a client locs and they began growing and she ASKED me to combine them! WHY?! That's how she chose her hir to look! But I would definitely TELL my client I'm combining if it were my idea. It would not ever be my idea, because I like a lotta locs. But would simply charge the client to maintain them. Because if they weren't in MY chair, I could possibly have the autonomy of taking a walk somewhere! I love exercise and am also becoming a group exercise instructor. All thingz natural! Great video.

    It takes longer to retwist traditional than just thirty minutes, but I'm glad I at least my got locs started by someone i trust and would continue to trust with my hair but I am so much happier to do my own locs, save money and put more natural products that I make and sell & I get to have a better idea what my hair is doing or feeling and if it ever starts to miss something. I am far more aware of my hair and how my hair behaves.
    Yes, I do get tired of doing my hair sometime but since I can have healthy hair by myself, I just can't get myself to go back to the salon and spend that bread (unless it's a certain style that I want) otherwise I am super happy doing my own locs!
    I guess for some people it's a tradition to go to the salon but I never been to a salon until I got my locs done, I've had people who did hair do my hair when I was younger (but not everyone is to be trusted) but as I got older, I just did my own protective styles and once I became knowledgeable I begun to do my own locs and I love love love love it.

    This is going to sound crazy but I agree with your reasons 100% even though I am the total opposite. I am an avid salon goer. I truly believe that you (and everyone) should have the right to choose how you will maintain your own hair. I can see how someone may ask why you don't go to a salon out of curiosity because I get asked sometimes out of curiosity why I do go to the salon. However, I totally get the other way, too, where the person asks you in a "how dare you make this decision for yourself" tone. LOL! I've had people tell me I'm not really natural because I don't do my own hair. I just shrug and keep it moving. No point in arguing with someone like that. Your second reason about trust stood out to me the most because you are so right about the sneaky stylists. I've heard some salon horror stories that have brought me to tears! Not all stylists are this way, though. We have some wonderful, honest stylists out there. The best way to weed out the sneaky ones is to ask as many questions and pay attention while getting your hair done and at home between visits. Do a 360 check of your hair before leaving and be observant of your hair's progression between visits. (This is another misconception. People automatically assume I don't know anything about my hair because I frequent the salon.) If the stylist knows you are paying attention and are not afraid to confront them about their routine (in a respectable manner of course) then they will probably do right by you. When selecting a loctician, it was very important that she had mature, healthy locs of her own, I saw the products she would be using and got a good understand of her routine before deciding to go to her. I care about my money just as much as anyone so I had to make sure she was worth it! And she is btw! I love your channel and look forward to seeing even more of your journey!

    I have learned to do my own hair since I've had locs because for me personally, it's not super hard (kind of tiring) but not hard to do, and as a college student it's the cheaper option. As well as, I get to use my own products and can be very aware of the healthy of my own hair vs someone putting products that I don't know and not telling me if there is somewhere thinning or something. However, it is really tempting to go to a salon every now and again lol I would go if I ever decided to color my hair or to get it styled. I think it's important for us, as black people to stop feeling like our hair is a burden. Not going to say it can't be time consuming because that would be a lie, but it's still beautiful and unique. And I'm lucky to have such thick and textured. But great topic!

    Sometimes I am served with attitude about maintaining my own locs. I sense that some locticians are shadily trying to drum up business by insinuating that I need their help. I don't. Other times it seems that because others who have locs who may feel the need or desire to go to a salon, and they just don't understand why I don't. On the other hand some people think it's cool that I have decided to take control of my own style. Personally I like being in control of my hair so that I can take all of the credit when it looks good.

    I don't have locs but agree with your reasons. Sorry for the bad experiences you've have had. I do go to a salon 1-2x/yr. I choose to go because I haven't developed the skill needed to cut my hair. I have extremely tight coils, but very fine and fragile strands. Cutting, even trimming it on my own has repeatedly had less than favorable results, and I found I was spending more money and time trying to correct the situation. So, after 3 years, I finally found a salon that consistently cuts my hair in a way that I can do everything else on my own. But if I ever do learn how to cut it myself, look out now...lol. Nice video.

    Joyce what an interesting video. You are so on point. People, woman that see people like us that actually love our Locked hair are given the sour face by others i think ultimately because they are envious that we have reached a point of loving ourselves and our hair and they have not gotten to that level of self love yet. I certainly have not been approached from anyone but im figuring that is what is mentally going on with our Beautiful Black sisters. I think in the years to come most of us will begin to love ourselves enough to let our hair be in its beautiful natural state. I was really surprised to find out that in the time of slavery we didnt wear rags on our heads because we had know clue on how to adorn our hair. We wore rags on our heads because after adoring our hair the white oppressors became attracted to us. Because of this the white the women forced us to cover our heads. Dont hesitate to research this fact. I never knew this until this year. So much of our history has been kept from us.

You always seem so genuine and "natural" and I absolutely love that about you. So two things, it seems like your locks got extremely short, at first I thought you cut them but I realized that they shrunk drastically, why do you think that happened? Is there a way to avoid that? I know they'll shrink as they lock but it seems like your shrunk to the extreme, if I may say. Also, I just had sisterlock installed 3 months ago, so yes, I'm still in my baby stage, but I hate the sisterlock shampoo, there's no smell to it, and I just want for my hair to smell good. Since I can't use any conditioner, do you have any recommendation for adding a good smell to my hair? Thanks!

    Well told I liked everything you said I have not been to a salon in years when I was younger the stylist talked about the texture of my hair and charged me I think 20 dollars more because of the natural makeup of my hair 🙁I agree with you a hundred percent it's hard to trust someone with your hair on your head I'v been natural almost 4 years now and it's the the best decision I ever made before I end Went natural I also used to get my hair professional done religiously I had a friend who would come to me and do my hair but I also spent a lot of money getting my hair done my hair is the healthiest it's ever been in my life and I don't know how to do cornrolls but I know how to French braid and flat twist my hair with my own 2 hands it is nice feeling when you can do your own hair and have nobody else in your hair but you am still learning about my hair and since those 4 years no one has not touched my hair but ME!😀

    My reasons are similar 1. Money 2. Time (don't want to be at the salon all day) 3. Tenderheaded now that I do my own hair (other people tended to treat my hair a little more rough, which is why I don't trust them)
