Recap 1. Hair density - amount of hair you have on your head 2. Hair strand diameter - fine, medium, or course hair 3. Number of locs you chose Goes in hand with the first 2 steps. May have lots of locs but fine hair and so it doesnt look voluminous. Might have high density hair and less than 100 locs but it's very voluminous
This was very, very helpful information. This makes more than the number/letter hair naming system which only describes the shape of individual hair strands. Thank you so much! I have fine, high density hair and that helps to explain so much of what my hair likes/doesn't like/is able to tolerate well/not well.
Two minutes into this video and I already love it. Scrolling through a bunch of videos and looking for something that applies to my hair or something realistic. Thank you for this video! Im beginning my love journey, high hair density and medium thick hair strands. I have two strand twists in the front, due to medium hair density and my applying heat.
Awesome, awesome video👏🏿! You really did a great job explaining this subject. I’m high density and medium strands also. Just started my 74 locs about a month ago. Can’t wait to see if they mature to really thick ones like I want🤞🏿🙏🏿❤️!
Very informative, thank you! It would help us visualize if you added some photos with examples of dreads made with the different hair conditions you've outlined.
Thank you so much!! Now I understand exactly what I was doing wrong when I tried to install loc extensions before. My hair is fine and I want 0.6 diameter locs but I don't want them long, (6 to 8 inches long).
This is so helpful for me thank you so much! Just starting out at almost 4 mths and I kept going back and forth with should I combine to have bigger locs or stay with what I have. I have 231 starter 2sts with med density and fine strands, the loctician that started them made my squares smaller than the traditional loc b/c of the fine strands so it was bigger than a sisterlock and smaller than a small traditional loc and that's why I interlocked 2 times and was thinking of combining to go bigger b/c I knew my hair would swell at the roots later, so far I'm pleased but wasn't at the beginning, actually she did do it right compared to what my hair would do later. The only thing now to learn to interlock myself b/c I believe it's to small at the base to palm roll and that's why I considered combining and also semi freeforming to keep the fulness, so with that I realize I need to stay open and not fret about it but I do understand what my hair will do in the locing stages. I realize this is very long, but I haven't been able to express my concerns with some locticians, they didn't understand what I was dealing with and they just say "just leave it alone". As a former hairstylist for 30 odd yrs. that's my mindset to find out, dig for an answer, that's why I like your videos. You sound part scientist sometimes!
Helen Blackshire ....actually I've been freeforming since 4 mths after starting, so no manipulation for 8 mths and loving them, I just wash with dreadlocksshampoo.com shampoo bar 1x a week and t-shirt dry and go with no separation. I still may thread at the bottom of the interlocking to hold together until the hair forms from 3-4 locs. thanks for asking!
Does the size of the buds tell you how thick your locs are going to be? I have small locs and im wondering if they'll eventually swell the whole length of the loc or stay small.
Thank You SOOOOOO much. You helped me make sence of this subject. I have asked so many people who claimed they are the masters of hair. They talk so much, just to prove to themselves that they are the all knowing person. They never answer the question. You stuck to the heading. My hair is fine and loose. I would like to have large ( 1/2 wth ) locks. What size should my base be? Thanks
Thanks. I was having a lot of questions since I expected my hair would turn out differently. My hair is actually similar to your description. Do you remember how many locs you got?
Right now I can't tell my thickness because I bleached my hair with splat it's been a while ago but I'm still obsessed with my gray so much I keep dyeing it. my mom told me to let it completely grows out before I do it again. Any chance you will have a great tip on getting and maintaining moisture?
Chelsea Rushing I started out with 60 two-strand twists, but I wanted more volume and I didn't want my locs to be too thick so they could be more versatile. Now I have 130 and although I plan to split some more, I couldn't be happier. I think you should go for it, especially before your coils start budding. I heard that it can be damaging, trying to split and resection your hair when it has already started to lock.
Thank you! I actually combed them out I think I'm gunna restart them again in a few months on my own terms or by myself I should say, so that I have more control over how they come out. After getting them done by someone else I realized I was very particular
Chelsea Rushing Me too. I got mine done by someone else, but I wasn't having it after a few weeks. I'm also very particular about what I want and sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that can get the job done right. Anyway, good luck!
@@JosiePosieWosie012 get some aussie mega moist conditioner n a water bottle n comb them out. Spray the loc with the mixture till wet all the way through n then they easier to comb out.
I think people lose length regardless of the method you start with. I dont know if people will specifically lose length from crocheting, but you will definitely lose length from back combing (which is often times paired with crocheting). If you have afro textured hair, back combing is not necessary. If you have straight hair, it might be helpful.

You can tell coarse medium or fine hair by just looking at it. No need for finger test. Im in beauty college i learned alot. For example low porosity hair is WHAT YOU WAAAAANT🗣🗣🗣🗣💪🏾 high porosity hair is completely damaged medium porosity is slightly damaged low porosity is healthy hair. Black ppl do not aim for high porosity hair. Low porosity is the goal, keep those cuticles down and aligned it’ll hold water and product better high porosity hair no matter wat u do product will never stay in hair and hair will always be frizzy as hell. Another thing CONDITIONER IS LITERALLY THE HEALTHIEST THING U CAN PUT ON YOUR HAIR‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ ok im done bye

Very descriptive explanations of the 3 factors that contribute to the ultimate look of ones locs! Very well said!!!!
I like the fullness of her locs!!! Big hair
Thank you for explaining hair types! This is the first time I’ve seen it explained this way! Appreciate it!

So when my stylist retwists my hair is she supposed to only retwist the roots or the entire locs? Because down the loc it's not looking good
If you’re just starting out she should be doing the whole loc once your hair locs the whole loc won’t need to be maintained as much
