  • In this video I discuss and share examples of materials you can try when priming supports for painting. These materials include PVA glue, GAC100, Rabbit Skin Glue (not shown), Acrylic Gesso, and Oil Ground. There are no demonstrations in the video, but tips, information, and recommendations on ways to use these materials when preparing your surfaces for paint. Note, there are many other suitable priming materials available to use when painting and these are just a few that I have used and can speak on from experience.
This video is not sponsored by any of the products' manufacturers. Always read the labels on these products or similar products prior to/when in use. Make sure you have read the safety precautions on these materials if you choose to use them. This video is meant to be educational and informative for students who are learning how to paint. If you're unable to find an answer to a question related to these products or how to use them, then I recommend researching them through the manufacturers' websites or contacting the manufacturer directly. This video is not intended to be a demonstration on using these products.
I recommend wearing safety gloves when you are using these materials. I use nitrile latex free gloves that generally work well for me.
I hope you learned something new from watching this video. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day.

Just some more updated info. GAC 100 is no longer recommended as a size from Golden, the manufacturer, for oil painting. I personally would not even recommend PVA as mostly bad experiences with it. I have tried them all. RSG is dependable and works. It is not perfect, as nothing is. Nothing else works like it.

Hi Ann, thanks for your comment and info. I’ve been hearing similar things regarding GAC100 that Golden apparently made a statement to use one of their gloss mediums instead of GAC100 as an oil penetration protection/size coat for organic substrates. Obviously it’s difficult to compare RSG given how much time we’ve had to watch its effects with climate, consistency, time, UV exposure etc vs polymer based mediums. I have yet to try out just a RSG size. Hoping to get to that this year. Can you please share your source so I can link it in the text of the video as an update? I’ve found a few articles that discuss GAC100 and GAC400 as size alternatives but like anything time will tell us what the best materials are to use. Thanks again for your comment!

@@hacuna45 You can find the article from Golden under their Justpaint blog. Sorry I do not have the link handy. I have also seen a video by them on youtube on this, is about two years old. I highly recommend giving RSG a try. The RSG is not difficult to prepare. And it has so many superior benefits compared to synthetics. The hype over being hydroscopic is over blown to help sell synthetics. All are sensitive to moisture. But I believe RSG handles moisture better.
