    This was asked below - do not use PVA to seal hardboard. I spoke with Gamblin support this week and they are clear that PVA was NOT designed for hardboard. I had put several coats on some large panels I'm preparing and they were not drying/still tacky after two weeks. Gamblin says I can go ahead and use the oil ground and the problem will be solved, but that they have talked to Ampersand several times and asked them to STOP RECOMMENDING PVA FOR PANELS.

      do you know if PVA SIZE could be used to seal 300 lb watercolor paper? And then use oil ground over it before painting with oils??

      @DannySabraArt 2 роки тому +2

      @@mc_va yes you can use pva or any acrylic medium to size and seal watercolor paper. Then you could apply the oil ground on top and paint on that.

    New question! I refer to this whenever I’m packing a painting which isn’t often. My question is how do you recommend to recipient to unpack. My client was a little overwhelmed with so many layers. Can they use a box cutter or could they possibly damage painting?

    Question please: I purchased the Gamblin Oil Painting Ground with the intentions of applying a coat (or 2) on my acrylic primed linen canvases. Of course, I was hoping this would give me a more enjoyable painting surface. Will this make a difference or would I just be wasting my time? Thank you for sharing.

      yes, it would make it super smooth. Your acrylic layer would just be your size.

    if I don't have gamsol, can I use turp to thin the ground to the right consistency?

    • @thedude1744

      Yes

    • @thedude1744
      @thedude1744 7 років тому +6

      Gamsol is an excellent solvent for thinning
      Gamblin mediums and for general painting. It evaporates 100% and leaves
      no residue in paint layers. Gamsol is less toxic than other
      brands of OMS (Odorless Mineral Spirits), mineral spirits, or turpentine
      because the harmful aromatic solvent component has been removed.
      You can use Turpentine it's just not as user friendly as Gamsol. I am not bothered by turpentine myself.

      @@MrBobbytheruler yes it is. it's not required if the hard board panel is already gesso with acrylic gesso. BUt it absolutely is required if you are just trying to oil primer a panel.. it even says so on the gamblin website

    • @DominicNJ73
      @DominicNJ73 2 роки тому +2

      @@devinmichaelroberts9954 Reread the website, they say PVA size on board is not required when using Gamblin Ground. PVA size is only needed on fabric supports to prevent the chemicals in the ground and oil paint from rotting the fabric.

      @@DominicNJ73 You just made me go all the way to the gamblin site to double check and you were wrong. Please next time dont be so rude and double check your info before calling someone else out. This is the direct quote from GAMBLIN on their website "Because the percentage of pigments is so much higher than in acrylic “gesso”, painters need only apply TWO coats of Gamblin Ground instead of the recommended four coats of acrylic. Fabric supports should be sized with PVA Size before applying Gamblin Ground. Also, Gamblin Ground can be applied on top of acrylic gesso for a brighter white, less-absorbent ground layer." ----- it NEVER says anything about not needing to seal the wood first with a size or glue. It simply reminds people hey, if you are using fabric you better especially remember to always size it. They put that reminder in because sometimes you dont need to seal woods depending on their makeup. Tempered woods etc.

    • @devinmichaelroberts9954
      @devinmichaelroberts9954 2 роки тому +3

      @@DominicNJ73 The quote you are talking about is above the oil ground section and it is talking about gesso on panel. It says you dont need to size a panel before gessoing. The wording is kind of confusing but ask any panel manufacturer directly and they will tell you to make sure you seal the panels. Its common sense. The claim that only fabric needs to be sealed on the gamblin site is very misleading.

      Hi Christopher, thank you for your question - the Gamblin Painting Ground is formulated from alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, and barium sulfate, making it more flexible and dry more quickly than lead/linseed oil grounds. I hope this helps, all the best.
