I was a kid in '73 or '74 when I first heard this song on my favorite radio station; it had just been released in the States. After the song finished, the DJ came on and announced in disbelief it was the Hollies and that he was going to play it again. Actually, he proceeded to play the song two more times.....in a row. I never heard a radio DJ do that with any other song, before or since.
Once when the Bee Gees received gold records; when they handed Robin his gold record, he said, "Hey, mine says The Hollies!" Even the Bee Gees looked up to The Hollies!
That is so Robin. Very funny guy. All 3 of the Gibb Brothers had a cheeky humour. The Hollies are right up there with The Beatles. I bet that all the bands of the 60's respected The Hollies.
These guys were (and still should be) gods! What have people come to in this day in age, with their pop and rap? I even hear country more than I hear this. Man, people are haters!
HAPPY 71ST BIRTHDAY TODAY to Allan Clarke of The Hollies. Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress and The Air that I Breathe are 2 of my top 10 all-time favorite songs.
@Glenn Shannon too bad your cage got rattled, I'm not in one. I've spoken to him before and he is a kind considerate gentleman, who unfortunately for you, doesn't take a lot of crap. You more than likely pestered him with what sounds like the same stupid shit you're blabbering here.
I was privileged to see Alan Clarke and the Hollies perform this great song live in Manchester many years ago. I was sat a few feet away, and they were superb!
Listen to one of the posted versions with lyrics. You are not the only one that couldn't understand. Most could not. The version with the lyrics will help you.
None of us cld but the chorus. We all either wanted the Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress or wanted to BE the Long Cool Woman in the Black Dress!!! Everybody LOVED that song & still DO!! 👏👏👏👏👏😉
Growing up in Lancashire with the Beatles, Stones, Hollies, I consider myself fortunate to have been in the cradle of music that changed the world. This song in particular reminds me of that period where all aspiring groups copied US music by Chuck Berry, John T.Hooker, and R&B from the South. Thanks for posting this great song and group who unfortunately did not really get due credit for their amazing talent.
I really like this song. What's not to understand? The lyrics tell a 3 minute story in rhyme with a great beat. Rock and roll is still keeping us young. In 20 years rap will be the "golden oldies" I should be gone by then.
I adore this song and am so grateful for you for posting!! Ummm. When I first fell in love with it I was driving down the road and me & my car started dancing to it. Dont think the other drivers liked me too much
Great live performance of this song. Apparently Allan Clarke left in 1972 rejoined the Hollies after the success of "Long Cool Woman". It's a really fun bass line to play, too.
one of the best intro riffs in rock history and lyrics and vocals. After all of that pop you finally learn how to rock and try to go solo. It is very hard to sing and play the chords he's playing at the same time and make it sound so dam good
@heymaryann1 It was such a special night because my husband had a heart attack & quintuple bypass surgery Feb. 7 & had just gotten the OK from his doctor to travel the 4 hours to get to the concert. My 87 yr-old mother isn't well so it's been a stressful couple of months for us & we really needed to get away from our worries. Not only did I have a great time, but my husband did too! Thanks, Terry! Now I know I picked the right Hollie to be my fav!!
Is that the late Marc Bolan making the introductions? Thank ever so much for posting this-I LOVE The Hollies and this is a real treat! More Hollies to love!♥
Yay! *This* is the video that Time Life sampled and dubbed in their "Legends" or "Ultimate 70's" infomercial, I forget which. I just know that I've had the other one forever, but I've been trying to find this one for even longer. Thank you!
I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music. ♫♫♥ ♥ ♥♫♪
This is Allan Clarke's song! He co-wrote it, he came up with that awesome opening guitar riff, he sings it. If I had a loonie for every time this song was credited to someone else, I'd be rich. Thanks for posting my absolute favourite rock song.
Any woman would scream seeing this man
I'm 64 yo, the first time I heard this song [as a teenager] it blew my mind, it still "blows my mind"!
Yea, me too!😁

One of the best songs ever made in my opinion.
Just listen to that E chord getting played.

Le chef d'oeuvre des Hollies ,la messe est dite...

The Hollies are right up there with The Beatles.
I bet that all the bands of the 60's respected The Hollies.
The Hollies w one of their influences as well (as cited by Bee Gee Barry).
hilarious
I think I saw that on tv
A classic song in any generation of music.
Loved this group in the 60s...still think their songs hold up really well.

Such a single distinctive voice!
Allan Clarke what a badass voice!
@Glenn Shannon grow up, it's not about you. What songs have you sung to the public? None?
@Glenn Shannon too bad your cage got rattled, I'm not in one. I've spoken to him before and he is a kind considerate gentleman, who unfortunately for you, doesn't take a lot of crap. You more than likely pestered him with what sounds like the same stupid shit you're blabbering here.
Allen what a great voice wow. And rockin' on the Telecaster . . .
I was privileged to see Alan Clarke and the Hollies perform this great song live in Manchester many years ago. I was sat a few feet away, and they were superb!
Best live band back in the day
Hats off to Allen Clarke!! He also sung one of the Allen Parsons Project's songs! I thought it was Kevin Cronin!! Breakdown!
The Hollies were perhaps one of the best groups of all time.every member was part of the vocals and they were tight.
Rare to see them sing AND play live. Thanks for posting.

I really like this song. What's not to understand? The lyrics tell a 3 minute story in rhyme with a great beat. Rock and roll is still keeping us young. In 20 years rap will be the "golden oldies" I should be gone by then.
Never understood why, just knew that great music goes to your soul. Never mind the lyrics....it's how they work together.

Tony Hicks, virtually a founder Hollie member and still with the group, sadly like all of us much much older !
Great live performance of this song. Apparently Allan Clarke left in 1972 rejoined the Hollies after the success of "Long Cool Woman". It's a really fun bass line to play, too.
Love the song and the performance.
Just a fantastic song that will last for ages, you have to dance to it, if this dosen't move you to get the body moving then forget it.

I was a 45's guy back in the day, and I can tell you that this gem was in my collection....
one of the best intro riffs in rock history and lyrics and vocals. After all of that pop you finally learn how to rock and try to go solo. It is very hard to sing and play the chords he's playing at the same time and make it sound so dam good

Brilliant song!
