On Wednesday 28th September 1988 31226 and 31280 were working the Middleton Towers (Kings Lynn) to Monk Bretton (Barnsley) British Industrial Sand hoppers and as the train was leaving the two-way goods line at Grantham station 31280 caught fire. The train was stopped and Linconshire Fire Brigade was called in to deal with the incident. 31280 was subsequently withdrawn ( 24th October 1988) and later scrapped.Very strangely,31226 also met its end exactly a month later on 28th October 1988 when it and 31202 rolled away down a siding at Cricklewood depot and ended up on a roundabout at the M1 junction at Staples Corner.31226 ended up on top of 31202.There were three potential reasons for the incident doing the rounds at the time, the handbrakes not being properly applied, the handbrakes being released by children and the brakes being deliberately relaased by a disgruntled fitter at the depot. It was withdrawn on 3rd January 1989. Due to the fire North West/East Anglia trains worked by class 156s couldn't access platform 4 and the Nottingham line,so in an at the time unprecedented move, they used the mainline platforms 1 and 2 and thence the ecml to and from Barkston south junction to then perform a reversal at Barkston East junction to travel via the Grantham avoiding line to regain the Nottingham line at Allington junction. Some of this video was filmed by my friend Ken White.
I remember the incident at staples corner my mum's friend had a small metal workshop on the A406 producing dials for Smiths industries for car speedometers rev counters and other guages. I actually saw the two class 31s after it had happened.
2:15 "Is that it?"ie "Start her up mate, get her a bit closer to the tender, me 'ose ain't long enough" Amazing footage, thanks for sharing, shame it was the end for 31226. Any idea of cause, oil leak?
As the video description says, "31280 was subsequently withdrawn ( 24th October 1988) and later scrapped." Withdrawal was about a month after this fire.

Thanks for posting, also nice to hear the fire engines two tone horns.
Now something you never see today Regional DMUs on Platform 1 & 2 let alone at the same time

31226 met an even worse fate with 31202 at Cricklewood, by escaping onto a road!
No more smoky than a class 31 thats not on fire😮
Well,at least the fire bell worked!
Dragging brakes I reckon ! A common problem on 31s when double headed !
Yes , not without their problems sometimes.
Looks like overheating Brakes stuck on causing a Bogie fire.
I was just going to ask the cause
Soon spread to ignight oil in engine room
No if you look closely the molten metal was dripping down from the engine bay plus fire was coming out of exhaust which indicates blown turbo
@ oh 🔥💨🚒💦
I'm a bit surprised you were allowed to stand that close to the burning loco, and all normal operation resumed albeit through different platforms!
I hope the OHLE was shut off when the hoses were in use?
Yes it was

Overheated /binding brakes and the accumulation of grease and oil on the bogie.
Can only improve it.
I bet that was the end for 31 280 !
