Good video. I agree it needs simplifying, I like the idea of the keyword system - but it should be a lot simpler. Eg can you stand on it, can you go in it, does it give plus 1 cover, does it give minus 1 to hit, does it block line of sight. And then all common terrain that they sell has those things defined.

Cheers for watching matey and agree. Its quite the difference from Warmachine!

The wonky LoS mechanic is a result of another problem: shooting has become extremely killy in this game. If you don’t have several pieces of terrain that completely bock LoS, shooty armies would shoot half of their opponents’ armies off the board in turn 1 and this was the case back in 8th edition where something Tau Triptide was incredibly unfun to play as/against. And since 9th edition was built on top of the framework of 8th, the current LoS system is a bandaid to address the issue. GW needs to revamp the entire game to fix the issue with terrains.

GW supposedly takes pride in the way their board look but there's a HUGE amount of the player base that just use right angle ruins and nothing else and IMO it hurts the hobby and makes the game look like shit.

Competitive play has been an afterthought for GW. It sucks that making your army look cool runs counter to keeping your army competitive. WTC and ITC are saving the hobby.

I genuinely don’t know how anyone could have a good and balanced competitive game without ITC terrain or a pre agreed process

40K is horribly designed, feeling like an exploitative mobile game that is just there to drive people into impulsive purchases. The core chassis of the rules are almost an afterthought. With terrain as with so many other things, the rules are accidentally complex through poor design. Without community involvement regarding maps the game of 40K would be almost completely non-functional competitively. Which is mad to think about really, GW are selling a game that fundamentally does not work without third party patching. Try playing a game on the official GW terrain at Warhammer World, it's a farce. But this makes travelling to tournaments - where often tables are set up differently - a compete lottery. I've turned up to events where the board was set up for horizontal deployment but we were playing a mission with diagonal deployment. Zero cover or LOS blocking, the person who goes first wins with no interaction. A complete waste of three hours at best, never mind the cost of entry and travel etc. LOS in general is fucking stupid. The number of cackling nerds who've claimed they can see the feather tip on one model and so get to annihilate a whole unit.

He mentions Warmachine near the start, and how they have boring looking but 100% rules functional terrain. And honestly, coming from WM to 40k, it was ... weird. 40k isn't a finished game AT ALL. It's not even not finished, the rulebook just reads like a bunch of suggestions of how to roleplay your armies. The idea that there are 'tournaments' of this game has always been utterly utterly baffling to me. BUT! I play a bunch of 40k, and don't play WM anymore. As a HOBBY, 40k is great! We get together and play 40k all the time, and because it's SO non-competitive, it's just a really nice relaxing way to hang out. You don't need to learn all the ins and outs of your opponents army, you don't need to measure multiple charge ranges every turn, you don't need to read and re-read all the rules. You just push your men in and chuck a bunch of dice and shout at each other. It's great.

@@Klamageddon 100%, it's a great hobby. Whether you are looking for a great hobby or a great strategy game just comes down to personal preference. But if you want the latter, 40K very much is not it. I've sold all my armies and now play MCP, a game which is both great to play and offers many wonderful hobbying opportunities. I'm glad people have fun rolling dice in 40K, I just happened to encounter a number of people who aggressively insisted it was more than that and it wasn't a great deal of fun. My favourite quote being "people only play other games because they aren't good enough to hack 40K". Lol.
