Great video, Thanks for the ideas! I've been making it work through lots of private teaching, playing local gigs, and some touring...but it's a grind I wouldn't be able to keep up if I didn't LOVE music! I'm still learning how to do it all better as everything is continuously evolving.
As a music school graduate, I can say the networking and access I had to great teachers and mentors was very helpful. However, I would have been more prepared for starting this journey successfully with some business classes and music production courses as part of the curriculum. As I came to learn through the years, playing drums at a professional level is only one of the essential skills you need to have make it work. For 2024, I'll be aiming to get some basic audio and video production skills together, maybe finally learn notation a software too! Hahaha - yeah, so music keeps me pretty busy.

@@MikeWalshDrumsepic! Yeah if I were forced to go to college, I would opt for exactly that - audio production and business. Audio production is huge with the whole online thing being almost essential these days.

while this is a good video at insight into how to make money, I feel that in the 'music school' category, there is a part missing. you can go to music school that isn't a conservatory like berklee (for example going to IU or TCU) and still make good money being a music ed teacher working in a school district. in most places, you get paid enough to live by working at the school either being a director, assistant director, or a private lesson teacher.
100%. I actually had a section about that in the video, but I removed it as my thoughts and statements didn't make complete sense. I'm not entirely sure how it works in the US, but in South Africa, you HAVE to have a degree to get paid a full salary as a teacher at a school. That's why I ended up quitting as a full-time drum teacher. I was never going to get one of those haha. But it's a solid path, and a much more reliable one than most of the things I mentioned, tbh.
