That's what we asked to the students of the BLC Dutch Winter School.

In short: Kapsalon = a dish, first made by a Turkish restaurant owner in Rotterdam, based on the favourite ingredients of a Cabo Verdean hairdresser next-door. The hairdresser frequently called the restaurant for the 'usual order for the 'kapsalon'.

Kapsalon can be really great or really bad, depending on where you get it. For those who didn’t quite get the story: it’s kebab meat, fries, garlic sauce, melted cheese and salad. The story goes that a hairdresser would always get this dish and then people would say “I’ll have what the hair salon guy ordered”. Hence the name kapsalon. But no one knows if this is a made up story or if it’s true. Haha
I thought it also had some hot sauce on it, like sambal?

They now sell kapsalon in Turkey as well. They call it Rotterdam.
Kapsalon is one of my favorites in the Netherland! My guilty treats, yum yum.
Behold our culture! A bunch of stuff in a tinfoil box. "Wow is this because you guys are so efficient?" Nope because we're drunk a lot.
The French guy really fits the stereotype we have of the French so thanks for showing us the stereotype is actually true. The American and Colombian dudes just dig in. I like that! Of course not all ingredients are Dutch but the combination is and IMO from Rotterdam. I get me a kapsalon now and again. It's really tasty.

You can find it in the Turkish kebabs in Belgium also, but with the cheese and sause it is pretty heavy. It look also a bit different here as showed here.
Schaarlade is how I'm going to call the dish from now on. Genius!

As much as I like these videos, your test subjects have all ben woefully unexposed to the arts and depths of Dutch cheesemaking. Please feed these people some proper extra belegen boerenkaas, some brokkelkaas, some boeren graskaas, a bit of Raede Jutter or Bastiaanse Blauw. There's a whole world of Dutch cheese to explore that cannot just be contained by the moniker 'Gouda'.
I took a summerjob at Bastiaanse in Molenschot. Real hard work but all staff was very friendly, didnt come back because the pay was pretty terrible to be honest. On my last day, they did give me a full wheel of cheese though that i had to bring home on my bike, living in a different village haha.
I hate how they're picking it apart acting like they've never seen fucking lettuce before. The combination might surprise you, sure, but just take a bite what the hell man..
I want to bring to the attention of the viewers that this is a top-level kapsalon. Usually, it is far less veggies and presented in a different and more disgusting way. This here is to not scare the foreigners too much.

As a Dutch person... Some are great, others are really bad... It seems like it's not as easy to make as you'd think, haha. I should try making it at home, it never crossed my mind until now.
I didn't try to make it at home, I bought it somewhere in Belgium and it was really good with cheese.

Ik zal vertelen hoe kapsalon is ontstaan.
Er was een beveiliger die klein van afmeting was en een enorme haardos had. In de nachtdienst bij een locatie vlakbij het Marconiplein ging hij vaak naar een snackbar aan het Middellandsplein. Dit was tegen sluitingstijd en overal waar nog wat van over was werd bijelkaar gedeponeerd.
Door zijn haardos kwam zo het woord 'kapsalon' ter sprake.
En zi ging het balletje rollen.
Probably the same in all country's I think, the best food is served by the creative dad at home at a Sunday.
And this is usually a mix of national food mixed with everything they can find in the cabinet and somehow it tastes like a touch of heaven.

When I first started learning Dutch, I learned about kapsalon and I tried making it myself.
I thought it was delicious, even though I couldn't figure out the garlic sauce. Definitely a dish I want to try when I ever travel to Nederland, so I can have the "authentic" version
If you go you have to ask the dutch youth about the best kapsalon they eat it mutch more than the rest
But watch out just don’t ask the ones in football trainers

The Dutch people never had the time to invent nice dishes because they were too busy bomping water and creating new lands, but thanks the Arabic and Turkish cuisine we have something nice to eat, I really like dürüm myself but it is definitely an after party meal.
There's tons of nice dishes! Stampot boerenkool, zoute Haring, patatje/frietje oorlog, broodje gezond, uitsmijter, mosselen met friet, bitterballen, erwtensoep, hutspot, kersstol, gevulde koeken, gerookte paling, poffertjes, oliebollen, kibbeling, hachee, appeltaart, different variants of cheese etc.
You should really try them. They're delicious!

There really is no debate. The food originated in Rotterdam. It's a known fact. The hairdresser (my former hairdresser) and the kebab restaurant (my former go to restaurant) who invented the dish are known.

It is the first time I hear about this. Never had it in my life. Has a lot of calories, I looked it up, about 1800 kcal per portion... that's more than I loose with my one hour work-out.

If they are not a fan of this, you probably bought it of the wrong store.
Best thing about kapsalon is that you have less wate material. If you order other dishes, they will pack the meat, salad, your fries and other sidedishes seperatly. It is better for the environment to order a kapsalon....but you will have to decide that soggy fries and warm non crispy lettuce are worth saving the planet.

Kebab and shawarma are different things - although very similar.
Put a layer of kebab on a dish, add a layer of fries, and a layer of cheese, then put it in the oven until the cheese is molten. Then add a salad on top. That's kapsalon.
it uses the same meat as a basis, but other than that it's completely different

Nog nooit gegeten en ik ben toch echt Nederlands.
Ik ook niet, maar het zou een heerlijke warme lunch kunnen zijn, hangt van de verhoudingen af. Alles apart opdienen en de eters zelf laten kombineren. Uiteindelijk is het gewoon vlees, aardappels, groente.
Ben het met je eens, volgens mij is dit Turks eten. Niet Nederlands.

Kapsalon is friet, shoarma, sla, kaas, knoflooksaus. Alle andere troep hoort er niet bij, tomaat of ui bah
Not the healthiest thing to eat, but it is a good fill up and never had a bad tasting one.
I’m a 51 year old Dutch man and have never even seen this. I have heard of it, but never seen anybody order or eat it. And I live in Amsterdam.
The French (?) bearded man dislikes everything without trying it in every episode. Typical for French people, super chauvinistic people. Only the French kitchen is good enough for them.
