    i've been listening to lectures by and interviews with dr porges for a bit and my life suddenly makes a lot of sense and it gives me hope for genuine healing.

      nuffsed You Know ho long it takes for those Ideas to become accepted in the Schollmedicin??Its slow very slow,they need to be proven first!And Now the Therapist go by what they learnt in there Books,what’s outdated!Its depending on what you can pay to your Therapist and if he is Inlightend,because Ego Humans don’t have the compassions to heal a person ho had multiple Trauma!Even us they want true it there selfs,the Self comes always first,it needs the giving up from Ego to make his Methods available!

      Me too. I'm trying to find the actual exercises that will rewire me now. I can't seem to just stop being defensive after a lifetime. Maybe Porges' SSP (safe and sound protocol).

      When child was treatened in a safety enviroment, she run from the safety enviroment in order not be vulnerable anymore. In the body, there is only true, it doesnt know lie.

    This was fantastic.
    And he nailed the reason I avoid Coaches.
    The evaluative context retraumatizes me and the impulse to punch someone is just too harsh on my bodymind.
    I just need my arisings to be witnessed - as he said - then they dissipate naturally and I can then figure out what to do on my own. I'm a smart girl and hardly ever truly need advice. When I do need it, I ask for it and I don't like it when people assume that if I'm talking about a negative experience, they feel entitled to give me advice. It feels like being poked in the chest over and over and over and over.
    It's great to hear how expertly he handles this issue and how equally expertly you heard him and made a good plan of action on your own.

      Yes! It feels really good to see someone else who gets this. CBT is great for “solving” issues but I found that after being out of it for a few months despite using the techniques consistently, the symptoms came back in more covert ways. It was like putting a bandaid over an infected wound. Talk therapy seems so appealing now; stop trying to fix me and instead provide a safe space for me to explore my own experiences!
      (Not to rag on CBT or anything, for some cases it’s just not as helpful)

      Interesting. I have to admit I've had these exact feelings with counsellors!!! Now that was with depression 20yrs ago. Now I'm trying2treat possible trigemnic nuralagie without strong drugs!!

      @@mintermchugh8176 I can c u don't get it! People that are hyper sensitive are often child victims of repeated severe trauma! they come in fear and are astute in reading threat and easily 'triggered'. It is automatic! They have become primed to see threats!

    Since i started doing vagus exercises, (massage, yoga balls, and now a foam roller i use standing up) i've seen a profound shift in my state, more relaxed, less stressed, just more a sense of ease and peace. I've been dealing with years of stress from ill health and various other factors which were exacerbated even more after the pandemic so i've been looking at ways i can improve my health and well being but now i'm seeing a link with this and years spent in solitude without social engagement over long periods due to ill health and a very challenging at times living situation which has meant i haven't felt safe in my environment. I knew there was something beyond anything talking therapies could and address and i think this is the key component, i'm seeing how i've been in a constant state of flight and how over the long term preceded by years of trauma growing up this has affected my behaviour and had a major detrimental effect on my ability to engage socially further expounded by the lock down, but i'm seeing the cause and effect of things and role my vagus system plays in all this and how it could be a major key in my health. I guess the question is where do i go next? I've seen the vagus nerve stuff and the books and lookngi for ways to start integrating poly vagal exercises into my daily routines and maybe look further into therapy and treatment, i really think this could be the way forward.

      But ask yourself what you need to do to heal rebalance yourself within, and you will guide yourself to whatever you need, intuition will tell you guide you to whatever it is,
      Singing, humming, whistling, socialising safely in a group of some kind, SAFETY is the aim a SAFE SECURE environment relationship is what humans require to be in balance (stop watching the news will help alot) get off social media too) not overloading the mind with infotainment will help too, moderate exercises yoga
      My body guided me to all I needed to heal, was always exactly right, I didn't know why I always breathed different to others, I just as kid did, I do t know why I always ran daily for fun I just did, don't know why I always talked alot talked things out dealt with things immediately I just did,
      I suffered terrible child abuse on every level terrible domestic violence in my teens
      Yet never had any mental health issues any health issues in fact was very balanced, because I was always 'intune' with myself with what was happening inside of me, somehow whatever was needed to rebalance me just naturally occurred no Drs books information from anyone outside of me was required, in fact the only time I have Ever been Undone was when outside sources/people interfered with my natural occuring process
      Body can does & always will HEAL ITSELF!
      It's outside sources that mess the bodies natural ability healing process up

      @@franwilliams4306Dr Arielle Schwartz practises yoga using vagal exercises. She has lots of videos on YT. Yoga has many of the breathing exercises too. Today I used alternate nostril breathing and it helped.

    "You Have no control over initial bodily reaction but you can have control on what you do and how you react to your initial bodily reaction" this is the key in Therapy. The Key is to Down-regulate visceral/physical cues/feelings then re-look at the information I have had a reaction to. Create healthy behaviours to down-regulate strong visceral feelings such as fear.

      Yes breathing exercises alone won't cure chronic stress or anxiety. You have to address the stressors themselves. For me that was obsessive thinking/playing conversations in my head over and over.

      My experience is that developing present moment awareness through meditation and prayer is helpful to detecting the disturbance of self soon enough to respond instead of react.

    Listening to Stephen regulates me. Also, I like his voice. He speaks with integrity. I have listened to him expressing his brilliance in respect to Poly Vagal theory many times on various you-tubes for the past 2 years. It takes time to trust. I get that he cares about how he presents himself to others. I feel that he thinks of himself and cares about how he comes across to others safety.

    This interview touched the core of my relationship issues, both in the general world and on a more intimate level. It was so good to understand that my nervous system simply overrides my cognition and that there are ways to calm my nervous system down to achieve a more peaceful and loving existence.     Great conversation! I recently saw a documentary on Mr Rogers. I feel that this theory validates his work on the importance of feelings.
    I'm now realizing that even my healthiest relationships are with people that are dismissive of my feelings. While they are supportive of my individuality and I feel they love me, they like to tell me I feel too much and need to think more logically. I usually just end up tuning out and agreeing with them. I'm usually the one who will listen to others vent and try to help them feel heard, it's hard to find people who will do the same.

      I am experiencing the same and learning to develop a relationship with myself in the same way I support others in being heard. I believe we all need connection and finding those who are like-minded starts with how we treat ourselves; this creates an openness to receive healthy relationships.

      @@soulwisdom82 Yes, good advice, thanks! I'm working on trusting what I think more rather than relying on what others think. If I have my own back then I can afford to lose those that don't treat me right. If I don't have myself to rely on and trust, I'll always be afraid to lose someone for fear of having nothing.
      I have started speaking up more with a friend, which she has been encouraging me to do. I am finding that we got along so well because before because I held myself back. Now shes calling my thinking flawed, whether I'm telling her how I feel or disagreeing with her. While she's been there for me through some hard times, as I have for her, she has also managed to minimize my opinions and thoughts many times. Now, I will value myself over holding on to that friendship, if it comes down to it

As you grow into your True nature, those who no longer are aligned with you (as you state above) and honoring yourself in relation to that friendship. This gives way to receiving friendships that are in alignment with your current state. This friendship sounds like it was/is a teacher for you to step into your power.

    Wow! I am familiar with Polyvagal theory, but this conversation really brought it home for me that the safety of the body is the primary issue. And that I have a lot more reading of Dr Porges to do!

      Yes, I'm feeling exactly the same. I KNEW all this, and now I know it in a much deeper way. Dr P's presence - even via Skype - is profound.
      I kind of want to write a much more popular book about Polyvagal Theory with him... :)

    Totally . We want people to see what we are suffering and that person then understands what you are suffering. So like other day I hit tipping point with people keeping me on hold them hanging up and then making mistakes with everything I was trying to do. I had been asking for support not bullying and judgement not CBT rammed down my throat about how my righteous reactions are treated like bad behaviour. So after 22 years of struggling. I managed to get an advocate to to help me. She then had to try ringing my dr ( she went yes it took me an hour. I said yes exactly and they all the state authorities is eating my life on hold because of their or other peoples mistake which for me are stopping me moving on). Having got me a phone appointment and Gl her. Telling me it was a phone appointment . Then my dr texting me to say I had missed my surgery appointment. When they were supposed to ring me. I then rang the advocate, left a message , then rang the drs after another 30 mins wasted of my life who were going to deny all their screw ups. But that as I ate then rang them and said , hey. You did say it was a phone appointment as she had made it. She then must of explained a bit about autism and processing. And the drs was much nicer. But that advocate was also annoyed my problem wasted 2 hours of her life so now she doesn’t want to help me. I’m not joking this is happening to me on 7 things then they are complaining I’m frustrated. The point is other people are wasting our lives with hold in the phone, chat bots what do t help. Companies not delivering their services then stopping us contacting them. I’m in a shut down now. I just feel I’m wading through treacle in this life.

      Maria Nelson...I know how frustrating it is dealing with health companies...drives me crazy and can easily trigger me. However, don't take it personally. They are all screwed up...I think they are overwhelmed, disorganized and short staffed. I frequently project my rage onto them, which is truly pointless. Maybe find a
      Coach to help you minimize your frustration and anger. (?)

I worked in care too and in retail I did my best for people. And stood up to bullies. Bullies hate people standing up to them. Half the nhs especially in MH are self serving narcissists

      Yes, that's one of the great gifts of Dr Porges' work - people can not only forgive themselves for their inability to "do the right thing" or "shake it off" or "get with the program," but realize that there's nothing to forgive. Their body was doing its best to protect them, and just got stuck in a strategy that was no longer helpful.

    I’ve been suffering cptsd since a child but full blown anxiety and depression due to that complete shutdown of FREEZE by 15🥵😱😭. To learn it’s now 2022 and this wonderful concept has been available in somatic healing is so damn angering!!! 30 years of suffering along with so many others.
    Aside from scientific egos we that suffer this intense pain is so exhausting I can’t believe I even survived high school. Thank dog for alcohol then otherwise I could relate to anyone. I was painfully numb emotionally. Literally locked in not a mood or any E- Motion. I was E-FRÖZEN🥶😶‍🌫️😱 That 1st year was HELL.

    I love you all for working so hard to help us get some light into a tunnel that has been my daily living hell. You are such beautiful beautiful human beings 💛💚🧡❤️💜💙🖤🤍🤎☯️

    I really enjoyed this exchange, thank you! And love those words "Help your clients see that they are not bad, wrong or broken" I met a few coaches and those were really unpleasant experiences each time because I felt judged and patronized and not seen or heard. Im so glad to know that the knowledge around trauma and Polyvagal Theory are being integrated into coaching now !

      Yes, so true! I'm doing everything I can to introduce Polyvagal Theory into coaching, especially health coaching. There's so much trauma, and so many neurological barriers to change, and we're battering our clients with cognitive and behavioral solutions that often harm them further.

    This information is life changing. I had no one to give cues and my personality split out of numbness so I could serve both roles for myself but switched back to receive. I observed myself thru others bc i couldn't trust them I used them to learn myself. I couldn't understand why I could intellectulize it but not convert to safety sensations.

    Great video. I definitely feel marginalized and feel like my ability to connect with other has been hindered to a great degree. I went through a few impactful traumas in my life. The most recent being about a month ago. I didnt feel like I could get through it because i feel like I have so few people around me that i can connect to. This makes it really hard to heal. The parts where you talk about being marginalized and feeling a bit disconnected from the body really resonates with me.. I don't really understand why but i feel like my symptoms sort of disappears when im talking to people, when im at my mom's house, around children and pets. I just want the things i need in life. Again thanks for the great video.

      Thanks for your kind feedback! Yes, mammalian co-regulation is so crucial to well-being, and it's so unfortunate that we've grown to think of it as an "extra" rather than a baseline necessity for wellbeing. I've been asking friends to text me photos of their dogs lately - I suspect for just that reason.

    It's crazy how I struggle to find safety in human beings but I feel safe with Dr porges. He's so calming and regulating and makes me feel safe like he won't hurt me like other human beings.

My whole life people have been devaluing my feelings and I have felt such shame that it was impossible to revisit my history without being more shameful because I have not yet been able to look at how I got to this point without even more feelings coming up.     Wow, wonderful. Love how clearly Dr. Porges is able to explain this in a cohesive way in this interview, and Howard you did such a great job interviewing him to bring out this information. Loved it. As a Bible based healing and deliverance minister (not a religion, Bible based following of Yeshua Mashiach-Jesus Christ-as God head. "Religion" is man made. Only the Bible, of any spiritual text on earth, is not a "religion;" it stands alone in form and function apart from any religion) and Manual Therapist in 25 years private practice, I have seen the importance of the ANS and vagal system in symptom development, and have been guided by the Holy Spirit and my own intuition how to help them by addressing the trauma origins of their beliefs and guarding tendencies, with many many clients with many types of symptomology, and with myself, in prayer, have been able to see my own trauma origins and heal in a process that's much like peeling layers of an onion. Now I'm learning about the polyvagal theory and it's really bringing this all to a grounded, comprehensive view that is immediately applicable, not only for my clients and students, but myself as well. (Edit: Love how Dr. Porges said we need to shift our focus imperative from "not dying" to "how can I be safe." That's God! His whole Word-rightly understood-is about that, Praise!) God made us so wonderfully! Thank you so much!

    Words, words selected, pauses, inflection and not just non-verbals say so much. It is a combination. As an autistic person who misses a lot the non-verbals, I pick up a lot through what I just mentioned.

    A very kind, patient man & so clear. The interviewer talks at length & in a slightly convoluted way. Porges answers simply & directly. I had to pause the video frequently so i could absorb what he was saying & not be derailed by the rush (anxiety? Enthusiasm?) of the interviewer. 🙏🏽

    This is so informative. Also, this conversation is an excellent example of why coaches (and their clients) should be clear that they are not therapists. There is a much bigger difference between a coach and a therapist than "coaches focus on the present and therapists focus on the past," which subtly casts therapists as retrograde. Therapists have years of schooling and thousands of hours of supervised internship training, which among other things creates greater assurance that they will not do harm. Trauma must be handled sensitively and slowly. Even after decades of clinical practice, most therapists still exercise caution around their scopes of practice when it comes to trauma, to feeling into the body, etc.

    I had childhood trauma since birth stemming from parental mental illness and health related mobility restriction. Then as a teenager, I had a near drowning experience that was calm. peaceful and removed all fear of death. As a Christian I reject suicide as an option but in times of stress and despair I gravitate to dangerous behaviors specifically aggressive driving and physical danger. I have sought therapeutic help but continually find multiple professionals dismissing what I reveal. My records show they are ignoring what I say and modifying it to what is comfortable for them to process and fits the mold of their typical client.

    I had a dream about him…he was laying in bed and was under covers and he looked so cuddly. I have been listening to different podcasts. So it was a weird warm dream.

    I believe I am a perfect example of the fight or flight seeking safety. Personal life married 3 times left first 2 husbands without them knowing...flight. job...quit in fear of being fired or have been fired from every job I've ever had. Defensive is what every Supervisor has told me. Grew up in home with extreme Domestic Violence and trauma

    G-d s love and teaching about what loving human behavior is and is not does not induce fear- in fact the opposite-
    It is when people harm others and don’t respect life and boundaries where fear is created.
    There is no fear in love, for Perfect Love casts out fear.
    It’s not Gods fault that some humans choose to harm instead of Love.
    Nature is a gift from God and I agree as a former pre-school teacher - we need to play and sing and dance- and clap.

    I started doing this instinctively,
    I started talking to my body instead, asking it why it was reacting what does it need right now etc without knowing it I was teaching myself to regulate, to listen to my body, I understood my thoughts were only in Reaction to my body prompts, because of this I started New You A New WAY Psychology- Embodied self Empowerment no advertising, no media no websites I am completely booked out through word of mouth only
    Because it actually works
    Body/mind connection

    I feel there is a caveat to this related to Emotional Intelligence and the ability to have learned the vital human necessity of accessing/acknowledging/accepting/expressing one's own feelings. I think we function properly when we aren't disconnected from others, when we don't feel as if we are marginalized or a source of dread to others. We need to learn how to understand feelings/emotions aren't happening to us necessarily, but are sensations we are having the opportunity to momentarily experience to use as navigational guideposts. At least that's been my experience. What do you think may be other cues that play a part Howard?

      I totally connect with "necessity of accessing/acknowledging/accepting/expressing one's own feelings" I use a meditation body scanning technique. Try and memorize the body sensations ; linked with certain negative thoughts like "everything will go badly" when everything does not go badly, I make a mental note. So next time similar body sensation and thoughts arise. I can now dismiss them more easily since I have that past event fully and conciously witnessed. Building that emotional intelligence :)

    People refuse to connect if your working classes . They demand we respect them but they don’t respect us or show no empathy. So if I ask someone how something would make them feel . They then sit saying well I’m not allowed to say, I don’t know. They simply refuse to relate to me . And I then say ok if it’s yiyr son or husband going through what the state is putting me through then giving 0 empathy then all I get is them being negative to me then telling me to be positive. It enrages me.

    This was a very intersting hour. I learned a lot in this discussion. Especially the fact that "If we have feelings of safety we can not have feelings of threat." So we have to lokk out for the moments we feel save.
    The only thing that was really disturbing is that the subtitels ar often wrong.
