It hinders absorption, not preventing it, and it obviously only applies to whatever is eaten during that sitting, not later in the day. If consumed with a vitamin C source, the effect is mitigated. This is true of phytic acid in general. It is present in lots of plants, and we've known this forever, not just from some recent study. It is demonstrably not an issue in people in real life; in fact, phytic acid consumption is associated with many health benefits.

Thank you thank you thank you dear Dr. Greger. I study your books every day. And btw...flax seed oil which you recommended for my arthritic knees....has changed my life because it took the pain completely away.
Phytic acid is in seeds and grains in order to prevent them from sprouting until they are in a warm and moist environment, It binds some of the minerals in the seed but it doesn't actively go around binding stuff in your body and some heat and moisture dissolves it.
Dissolved phytic acid would be worse than insoluble when it comes to binding metal ions in the gut, and the heat from cooking isn't going to destroy it. You may be thinking of soaking oats in water before cooking with them, but then you are washing out the phytic acid, not destroying it.
@@mattermat1925 phytic acid is not a big problem, it's another example of micro managing micro nutrients. Health outcome is what matters and health outcome data shows that it does not cause health problems. My point was that soaking and exposing to heat gets rid of phytic acid.

Here are the three GI ratings: Low: 55 or less. Medium: 56-69. Steel-cut oats have a GI score of about 53 (so low GI), and rolled oats - of about 57. Both oat types are better choices than other forms, such as instant oats, which have a GI of about 83. So while this guy is correct about instant oats that typically have loads of sugar, steel cut oats are low GI. It would be nice if he made that distinction and gave steel cut oats the credit for boosting heart health by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol and blood pressure, help with diabetes management and blood sugar control, keep you feeling full for longer, and can prevent or relieve constipation.
The solution is to cook the oats for at least 2 hrs. This applies to all grains. Slow cooking of grains will do the trick. Practically, we baked the oats prior for those hours and store it that way. I only use preprepared oats or properly baked oats

@@kallekallesson1761 You might wanna look up the definition of veganism from the vegan society. You know, those, who coined the term vegan/veganism. Says nothing about eating raw...
So since you can’t be bothered to bring actual science to debunk the guy you’re reacting to, I’ve brought it for you: First, Phytic acid is definitely present in oats, as it is in nearly all grains, normally you can just soak a grain in water to help breakdown the Phytic acid, but this requires the phytase enzyme and oats have very little of this enzyme. So a soak helps, but only barely. The human body doesn’t have the ability to breakdown phytates making it nearly impossible for humans to absorb the nutrients in the oats. So Dave isn’t wrong, they are kinda worthless, unless you breakdown the phytic acid. Secondly, oats do cause a higher spike in insulin. They score roughly a 60 on the GI. Whereas ice cream scores roughly a 35 on the GI. Instead of using your status as a “doctor” and truly being the actual “trust me bro” in this equation. Maybe you can actually provide scientific data to back yourself up. But you are clearly a vegan first and therefore you have propaganda to spill instead of actual science. You’re the problem with the modern medical establishment.
@mikevectorkilo4410 It depends on the vegan, some vegans are more strict then others and really pay attention to how the food is grown and processed. I'm a strict carnivore, so I get it.
Wow what a great counterargument from whoever this guy is. “It’s one of the healthiest foods you can eat,” no explanation. I can never know who to trust when it comes to nutrition
If you cared about the environment, you'd encourage grass fed, free range animal farms and give up the vegan crap. Not good for the environment, not good for the body

"Peasants" had better health than the nobility of old who were plagued by heart disease and gout, and the healthiest in society (monks and nuns) ate the closest to a whole-food plant-based diet- including porridge!
Dave is actually right though, oatmeal absolutely destroys energy, as a worker on the back of a waste management truck slinging heavy cans all day long - we learn through experience what gives you energy. oatmeal is the last thing you want before a hard days work... good luck eating it every morning thinking your body is thanking you
I mean yeah it’s a carbohydrate, it’s not going to provide sustained energy for a long day of hard physical work. That doesn’t mean it’s not healthy. As with all foods, you need a balanced diet. If you add 4 eggs into your breakfast with a bowl of oatmeal I promise you’ll have a lot more energy. Itś all about context. Meaning that the quality of oatmeal with the quality of milk with the exact amount and then in the end because of a slightly raised blood sugar, NOT cavering in to eating naughty stuff. That is the real truth. Eating the traditional oatmeal in the normal way most people do is actually not as healthy as the experts claim. So like everything in life: context matters.
Oatmeal is food for peasants. It does spike blood sugar. Steak has way more nutrients. Doesn’t spike blood sugar and is what peasants wanted but couldn’t get. Oatmeal was what people ate to stay alive until they could get food.
So the No Way guy says the oatmeal doesn't suck the minerals out of your body but didn't dispute that oatmeal spikes your blood sugar more than ice cream. I feel like I'm standing in front of the Labrynth door knockers trying to figure out which one lies and which one tells the truth.
It doesn't suck minerals out of your body but it does block the absorption of some vitamins/minerals. Also, it does spike your blood sugar (but all carbs do really).
Every literature of medicine telIs u that oatmeal has phytic acid that can reduce the absortion of minerals per meal. Soaking oats in liquid (such as water) with a splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice for 12 to 16 hours before eating can help reduce phytic acid. This process allows enzymes to break down the phytates, making the oatmeal more nutritious and easier to digest. Instant oatmeal has a glycemic index of 74, which is way higher that many ice-cream. Please educate yourself if you want to educate others.
I love how he uses the term "peasant food" not understanding that what he is referring to is actually farmers who had a fairly good diet , it wasn't uncommon for a peasant to eat salmon regularly as the land they were farming belonged to kings, lords and dukes and were allowed to take a certain amount of such things , so I'm happy to eat my "peasant foods" 👍
Dr Gregor is someone ive always listened to because hes smart and factual...Dave is someone you buy your weed from but never take advice from or take anything he says with any credibility
LoL, this chump glossing over Phytic Acid. Phytic Acid (categorized by some in the industry to as anti-nutrient) does in fact do all those things in pretty much all research done on it. It prevents absorption of Calcium and some other minerals by inhibiting Vitamin D. So its not technically "washing out" as much as preventing resupply of minerals.

Not any bodybuilder I know.

None of the people you mentioned are late 90’s will sharp mental faculties.
You guys treat fruits vegetables as poison but we came from the ground (periodic table of elements) so we must eat from the ground to recreate tissue . The problem is people today are so sick /malnourished . As soon as they put a healthy substance in them , they have reactions they don’t like .
Got to cleanse the body , reestablish a healthy micro biome , get the body used to eating what it should be . If you stay away from fruits vegetables for a while then introduce them , sure you wont have good reactions . The body loves consistency and adapts to what you give it .
@iconic3509, you are very silly, modern fruits and especially vegetables never existed in nature, man made thru intense hybridization. We eat ruminant animals that have the ability to assimilate nutrients from plants.
@@zamfirtoth6441 my comment was centered around the advent of vegetarian or vegan diets when somebody claimed the carnivore diet was the oldest one .
Even if you are not religious , read genesis 1:29 which outlines the diet for mankind from the one who made us . If you believe in god , then it makes sense that you came from the dust of the earth (periodic table ) and we need to eat from things grown in the earth to perpetuate a healthy life. Any nutrients that meat provide is through another step of the animal eating the greens then you get it second nature . The earliest of people and longest lived eat mostly live fruits / vegetables nuts / seeds in their purest form .

That dude just makes things up. Oatmeal is super healthy. And if that is true then why were all the peasants healthier than the rich. They ate oatmeal
The quakers oat mascot must be making him quake in his boots.
Peasants are some of the fittest and most physically attractive people in the human population. Health is beauty.

@@kallekallesson1761 You might wanna look up the definition of veganism from the vegan society. You know, those, who coined the term vegan/veganism. Says nothing about eating raw...
So since you can’t be bothered to bring actual science to debunk the guy you’re reacting to, I’ve brought it for you:
First, Phytic acid is definitely present in oats, as it is in nearly all grains, normally you can just soak a grain in water to help breakdown the Phytic acid, but this requires the phytase enzyme and oats have very little of this enzyme.

Oats provide a lot of dietary fiber which is important for colon heath ( in addition to helping prevent large spikes in your blood sugar from the carbohydrates)

Oatmeal lowers my testosterone. I gave it up.
Oatmeal - high carb, high inflammation, high insulin. No such thing as an essential carb therefore it is not a superfood

Yeah, it might not suck minerals out of your body, but it does have an incredibly high carb count. I can't eat it because I have diabetes.
Have a look into mastering diabetes. These guys are type 1's eating plenty of carbs with highly controlled blood glucose thanks to low saturated and other fats.
