- In week 9 of the 1969 NFL season, prior to a game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams, the Eagles, at the last minute, prevented actor and singer Jim Nabors from performing the National Anthem, infuriating not only Nabors, but especially infuriating the NFL and CBS officials. The reasoning behind it was unbelievably stupid, dealt with a jinx and superstition that was absolutely ridiculous, and to the shock of no one, this move did not work out the way that the Eagles thought it would. Jim Nabors hated to watch the opening of the Gomer Pyle Show. Not that he was embarrassed abt it, but it was filmed @ USMC Depot San Diego. Most of the other Marines filmed around Nabors in the intro ended being killed in Vietnam & that upset him until the end of his life.

Sounds to me CBS was only pissed because they couldn’t promote his show which was on their network at the time. He was on CBS for years which is why it would make sense he’s singing the anthem wherever the game was played. I would bet every time he sang the anthem the announcers introduced him with some phrase that included “From the CBS Show…”
Yet come 1970-1971, with the hiring of Fred Silverman as Head of Programming by CBS, "The Jim Nabors Hour" and all of the shows that gave CBS the nickname "Country Broadcasting System", would be cancelled; replaced with shows such as "All In The Family" (and it's spin-offs and other shows produced by Norman Lear), "Mary Tyler Moore", "M*A*S*H", etc.

Well there's a reason for that no official NFL partner was allowed to speak of it. To others it was known as Jim nabors curse. That's why when the eagles won the super bowl recently people said that the curse was lifted.
@@8bitorgy there was also the Lombardi Curse as well, as the 1960 NFL Championship game between the Eagles and the Packers was the last postseason game Lombardi ever lost, retiring as Head Coach of the Packers after Super Bowl II, the last championship he won. The Eagles not only won Super Bowl LII, which was a little over 50 years after Super Bowl II, but also won in Minneapolis, which is in the same division (NFC North) as the Packers.

I suspect that they came up with this scheme last minute, after Neighbors had already travelled to Philly. I also suspect that they didn't want him singing at all, but they decided they probably couldn't get away with having him not sing at all.

This is funny as the Flyers would have Kate Smith sing God Bless America, either live or recorded, before all of their home games forever and a day until the controversy of some other songs she performed forced the Flyers to get someone else to sing.

Besides the Eagles losing the game, were there any consequences levied to the organization for pulling this trick? You'd think both the NFL and CBS would come down HARD on the Eagles, since that also affected sponsorships through TV ads after the anthem.

@@kevinmoore2929 they had more than just Norm Snead. They had Pete Retzlaff as GM and Jerry Williams as Head Coach. I wasn't until 1976 when Leonard Tose (one of the "Happy Hundred" who bought out Jerry Wolman in 1969) finally got Dick Vermeil, who, with Ron Jawarski taking on the reins as Starting QB from Roman Gabriel, turned the team around.
I thought the punishment was not completing the tank job in 1968 and having to watch Norm Snead hand the ball off to “Not OJ Simpson.” Not to mention that a drunk Santa Claus had to be sacrificed for these misdeeds. Those rough Eagles teams of that era could’ve benefitted from OJ slicing and dicing the opposition’s defense, stabbing through the holes produced by the offensive line, scoring touchdown after touchdown until he’s standing over the other team’s bloodied corpse, but instead the only thing murdered was Eagles fans hopes for a contending team…oh and you know…

Its great that you focus on ‘60s and ‘70s football. Would you consider an occasional USFL story? There are a lot of great story lines from those three years, from quite a few future NFL players, and a few interesting inter-league related tales. Like the Houston Oilers refusing a scrimmage with the Houston Gamblers. (we all know why - and they weren’t the only NFL team to shy away from a scrimmage offer).
there was heavy amount of crazy things going on in the 1982 & 1987 seasons, with the strikes, with the USFL years in between them.
Would be something to also add in the short-lived WFL, which had a few defectors from the NFL (most notable being Larry Csonka).
Especially how Donald Trump RUINED that league almost single-handed.

The Eagles lost 7 straight to the Rams from 1964-1978 before finally beating them in 1983.
Did you just say the Rams were the best while listing the Vikings as both by far the most points scored and least points against? Cmon man.
IMS always had him sing most of the time for the Indy 500 but couldn’t make it a few times in the 80s but sang until he died. However people watched the Indy 500 just to hear him sing.
Few things of note, this Rams team was an interesting study. After this game, the won 2 more games, and then didn't win another game that season including the playoffs. #2, this was also the season of the infamous Century division in which JG9 did a video. And #3, i'm kind of surprised you never did a video on the Philadelphia Eagles snowballs at Santa game from the previous season as there's more to the story then 99% of people really don't know and if they did know the whole story they would have been throwing snowballs at Santa too.
ESPN did a huge 10 minute piece on the whole thing a bunch of years ago. Found the Santa and everything.

I knew Nabors was one of the most bankable superstars of that time, but DAMN! With that said, the Eagles were stupid at that point. The Rams were a better team and they didn't need Nabors singing on TV to help them beat the mediocre '69 Eagles. Thank goodness nobody could pull this kind of stunt today.
Okay leaving out a pretty big deal here. Jim Nabors lived a full life until November 30th. 2017. The NFL was in its 52nd SUPER BOWL Year which would see the Philadelphia Eagles finally claim their first super bowl. The Curse of Jim Nabors has been broken.

The Eagles did something similar during the 1980 NFC Championship game . They made the Dallas Cowboys wear their blue jerseys instead of their white ones. The Eagles home jersey was their green ones but they heard of the " blue jersey jinx" and made the Cowboys wear their blue jerseys . It worked because they won the game and went to Super Bowl XV.

"Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C." ended just as CBS enacted it's "Rural Purge". The purge cancelled top ten shows like "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "Green Acres", along with other rural based shows like "Mayberry R.F.D". They were cancelled in favor shows like "All In the Family", and "MASH". Edgier, hipper shows which the network felt would attract a younger audience. This was at the time when viewer demographics became an important metric in TV ratings.
Actually, Jim Nabors asked CBS to end "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." so that he could focus on his singing and acting career. CBS in turn gave Nabors "The Jim Nabors Hour", which was the show that was being promoted by the network. Only with the hiring of Fred Silverman, did the "Rural Purge" took place (1970-1971). Of all the programs introduced by Silverman, only one remains today, "The (New) Price is Right" (debut on September 4, 1972, now in it's 50th Season).

And he was never supposed to sing Back Home Again in Indiana. Back in 1972 he was a guest of the speedway to watch the race. I believe the person that was going to sing got sick and Nabors was asked to do it. He got about an hour notice and someone had to write the lyrics for him. It started a great tradition.
The people running Gomer Pyle USMC wanted to fire Frank Sutton, who played Pyle’s drill sergeant. When Jim Nabors got his variety show he made sure Sutton was part of the show.
Garth Brooks almost refused to sing the National Anthem before Super Bowl 27 because NBC wouldn’t air his latest music video in its pregame show. Depending on who you believe the Super Bowl didn’t have a backup plan for the anthem. Don Weiss ran that Super Bowl for the NFL, and he said there was no Plan B. He told the entertaining story in his book, “The Making of the Super Bowl”.

This had nothing to do with the fans. This was done by the people who ran the team in '69. Heck, I'd been an Eagles fan since 1970, and I had never heard of this before today, and I know of the Santa snowball incident. Even I think this was a stupid idea, and that the Eagles deserved it backfiring on them.

If I were using a Tunnelling Electron Microscope, I would still be unable to locate the point of this ridiculous waste of internet space of a video.
I bet I'm the only person in the comment section who was actually at that game. I was nine years old at the time and my father took me and my twelve year old sister to the game. It was very cold. I remember that very clearly. It was also the first (and only) time my father ever bought me hot chocolate to drink. What I remember about that was that it was scalding hot, and basically just chocolate flavored scalding hot water that you couldn't really drink until you let it cool down for about a half hour. What isn't mentioned here is that the Eagles had a chance to win the game on the final play and a thirty-something yard (I don't remember the exact distance but it was about that) pass to Ben Hawkins was off the mark. The Eagles were really bad back then. The Rams stayed undefeated for a little while after that before they lost to the Vikings. They subsequently lost to the Vikings in the playoffs.
At that time Philadelphia could've lost both ways. Either disrespecting Jim Nabors or disrespect the National Anthem for being untelevised
The Rams that year won their first 11 games, then fizzled and lost the next 4 in a row, including the division playoff to the Vikings 23-20 at the frozen Met. I wonder if Jim Nabors sang at that last game too. The year before the merger.

The reason why the Star Spangled Banner was played on television was simple: Patriotism. We were in the midst of a jungle warfare known as Vietnam at the time. The Patriotism fervor were high in 1969 so the networks ran with it as long as it was a booster in the ratings. Jim Nabors was as "red" American as it came (except later we learned he was homosexual which should never affect him being as American as aanyone else is).
So Snead did only slightly better than if you did nothing but spike the ball into the ground on every single play
WHEN you get a chance watch ANY Gomer Pyle episode WHOA Sargent Carter yelling at Gomer and Gomer loving it was HILARIOUS.
WAY WAY better than anything done on TV since. AND in 1969 there was ONLY one team and player that matter the MINNESOTA VIKINGS and Joe Kapp. The very year i fell in LOVE with the Vikes. Though I also loved Johnny U and we hated Joe Namath for beating the Colts the year before this season. Though we now love Joe Namath AND remember Roman Gabriel played for the Eagles
It went so poorly for Jim Nabors, he would've had a better anthem if he'd thrown the microphone into the ground on every down.
The home team getting loud when the opposing team is on offense... what about when the Detroit Lions' crowd was asked by the refs to turn down the noise? ...Yes, the Lions' home crowd.. at one point, I guess, was too loud for the Jets and Parcells complained to the refs. :)

More recently, the Cowboys got word from Seattle, & a few other teams that Washington’s heated benches did not work most of the time. So the Cowboys got a company in Ohio to make some heated player benches and ship them in(they did not ask that the Cowboys moniker be on the seats, the company made that decision) Washington fans thought Dallas was being disrespectful but in reality they were looking out for there own. By the way…….I am a Cowboys fan since 92 from NC.
NFL plays fewer than 300 games per year, so with a video every day, JG9 will eventually have to make multiple videos about same game.

I never knew this because I was born on the 1st of that month but the amazing thing is people in Philly wouldn't have seen this live because back then home games weren't shown on local TV. Maybe part of the reason the Eagles thought at the time they could get away with it.

I'm not great at trivia, and would be useless at trivia from before the mid-90s without educating myself through practice, but I'm so painfully broke (I cannot afford basic needs because I'm disabled and the disability process is not only a sham, but it intentionally keeps people broke while people like me build tens of thousands in debt, while never promising that someone can actually get approved for SSI / SSDI. But I digress....) and I would happily become an encyclopedia of knowledge if it seems feasibly winnible. But if thousands of people are doing it (instead of, like, 100, then it's not worth it.
