OK... this isn’t up yet, but, here’s my comment (based only on the teaser and not the main vid.) Fannie Meldensshon, Felix’s sister was a highly talented musician in her own right... which wasn’t permitted in those days (the same fate befell Mozart’s equally (if not more so) talented sister.) I suspect that Felix felt that his sister would not be allowed to publish her compositions under her own name, so I believe that Felix did the only thing he could, and that was to publish them under his name (George Sand, anyone?).

Thank you so much for researching and sharing this story. It's one that happened so often to other women. Maybe a similar one that pops into my mind is the one of Caroline and William Herschel. Yes, they were scientists (astronomers), but also great musicians. In fact, music was their initial love. Caroline Herschel, after struggling for years, finally was respected and accepted as a professional singer, when she declined lucrative contracts in order to be able to support her brother William in his scientific work. At least, she has been recognised and awarded for her scientific work. Caroline died 1848 98 years old.

I am so happy to see you are going to speak about the Mendelssohn family! I have always loved their music and Felix is my favorite composer. The works of Fanny deserve to be brought into the light. She is hugely talented and her works are becoming very popular. I have always prided myself as a very knowledgeable resource on the Mendelssohn family. I studied them since I was a kid. I agree that Felix did not steal her works, it's more that she was not allowed to publish under her name so Felix stepped in. When Fanny passed away in 1847, Felix made sure a good number of her works were published under her name. I think this was his penance. Looking forward to hearing your take on the subject! Oh one last important thing! The picture you have depicting of Fanny is actually Felix's wife Cécile Jeanrenaud Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

This is SO well done! Congratulations and thank you. One comment/concern… the first image you use to represent Fanny Mendelssohn is actually Felix’s wife, Cecile. Please note, this is a minor concern, but seems worth mentioning. Again, this video, the research, presentation…etc are fantastic.

Thank you. That is a wonderful recounting of the life of a great talent. We are enriched by knowing this.
It’s a keen observation that we are products of the times in which we live. As we scoff at the norms of the Victorian Era, it’s important to know that our laws, opinions and actions will be questioned by our “enlightened” descendants.

Fascinating take on the Mendelssohn family. I stumbled across this video while scanning your entire channel for a Righteous Brothers reaction (I could have sworn you did "Unchained Melody" at some point) that I never found, but I was so interested by the title of this vid that I had to come back and look for it.
I agree that social norms unfortunately served to undercut Fanny's talents and chances. I wonder, too, whether she acquiesced in allowing her family to minimize her work for so long; you have to think that some women may have internalized the notion that their accomplishments should be private and not public, much in the way that many disadvantaged groups now are sometimes seen as "participating in the own oppression." I'm glad she persevered, though, and ultimately found a supportive husband. I'd like to think that she was proud of herself and her accomplishments at the end of her too-short life.
I'll have to ask my musicologist friend about her - this would be right in her field of interest. Thanks for the lesson!

Sad really, much like Clara Schuman these are two extraordinary talents that were not allowed to fully blossom
I will say, I find her brother an extraordinary creator as well. As for the Schumans, while I wont say Robert is not an extraordinary composer I do not enjoy his style and would much rather see a fully developed Clara in the spotlight (a matter of affinity rather than merit)
In all sense, I will say, the extraordinarily strong push towards any gender will always result in loss. I find the bias then equal to what the media wishes to push. Balance, everyone should have the same odds but merit is up to the individual.
Awesome channel and loved this walk in the park with Fanny :)

i you are interested in learning about composers that are not well known due to gender, race or preferences, look into the life of Joseph Bologne, AKA "Chevalier de Saint-Georges" He served as a colonel of the Légion St.-Georges in the first all-black regiment during the French revolution. He was also a classical composer, violinist, conductor and champion fencer.

Beth, I really liked this one........
Abraham Mendelssohn clearly knew the evolution of involvement regarding women in music before his time in my opinion: however, his views had to be well calculated.
It was an evolution of recognition that was inevitable........

that was interesting and rarely to find on the reaction- sector, so thanks for that, i'm always keen on this sort of background information.
wherever i go to look for interesting reaction videos it's more or less the same content. dimash, angelina jordan and so on. but there is so much more interesting music to find. more people should react to susanne sundfør, for example. she is so amazing! if you want to be ripped apart by a song, "when the lord" is a must. DamienHurts commented it in perferct words: "Wow, I wasn’t prepared for the waves of emotion that would crash over me, engulfing me in tears. I wept within the first minute. What a sublime portrait of a woman, thank the lord that her story lives on, and her fantastic pictures. Her self portraits are so haunting, so exquisite and overflowing with emotional intent. Susanne’s song perfectly encapsulates the meaning of the source material."

her vocal qualities are equal to her songwriting qualities, unique and outstanding, so give it a listen!
