I love all of Simple Minds stuff. I saw them at the Milton Keynes Bowl in '86 but my most vivid memory was at the local Bletchley nightclub - Don't You Forget About Me was always played in the last 1/4hr, at the time of night when there was no-oneon the dancefloor, most people sitting around quite cream-crackered, but after just the first 2 notes of Don't You forget About Me was played and everyone was off their seats and heading to the stage - as if Santa Claus had arrived at nursery school. It was brilliant!
Have seen Simple Minds countless times in every decade. Best band ever in my opinion. Have never been given the credit for what they deserve. New Gold Dream and Sparkle in the Rain are masterpieces. Don't lose that Scottish accent Jim ! You're sounding half American these days!
NGD and Sparkle are great albums, I personally wore my copy of New Gold Dream out on both vinyl and the cassette copy I made to preserve the record. I think his accent is the result of decades of trying to be understood by the rest of the English speaking world. He's kind of slowed things down and speaks with a deliberation reminiscent of a kindly old pastor these days. Thanks for watching and leaving us a comment! Cheers, MRH
Sparkle in the rain was the beginning of the end of Simple Minds. You could hear that they had stopped making music for themselves and were writing for a particular audience; namely Americans. I like all 3 singles but have always felt that the drums overpowered everything else on that album, as was very much the vogue at that time. With more subtle drums and without the "go down to Brixton, Robert De Nero crap at the end, Up on the catwalk would have been a classic Simple Minds track.
A fan from Germany. You feel and see how passioned and enthusiastic you were during this interview. Jim Kerr in my opinion one of the most reflected "stars" in the business. Simple Minds musically seen , one of the most underrated bands of all time. Great live muscians.
@@karendegenerous600 Thanks for listening to my music and for all the love and support. I appreciate it. Without loyal fans like you I’m nothing.I love you
It was 1984 for me and one of my favorite shows of that decade. I was surprised at how emotional I became watching them this year. Those songs still hold impact over me. Cheers for checking out our video!
You're more hard core than me. I came in at Sons and Fascination. It was surprising to me hearing those songs live and how much they emotionally connected with me still. mrh
When I was a teen in the 80's I didn't get Simple Minds at all. They have broken down that wall of cynicism around my mind and I love them for it. They have such a fantastic and original sound.
Very good singer jim and moves around the stage like a panther....cant buy that . Great interview, wise words, reals estate killed that band gigging culture, spot-on.
May I allow to add your LP "Empires and Dances" "New Gold Dreams" Such masterpiece ✌✌ And White spaces feat Jim Kerr : " The Man who sold the World" - D. Bowie. Brilliant💖
Let us realize the period in which they grew up, all the gigs they've been to. Bowie, Led Zep, Genesys, Bob Marley, all at their very best, live... Must have been a fantastic inspiration but also something that unconsciously forces you to level up as a young musician. Man, we haven't that nowadays...
I just went through the Simple Minds Setlist.fm list and he wasn't just being polite to his Canadian audience, they really did play shows throughout the country on the Sons and Fascination tour in 1981 (my favorite album of theirs). Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Waterloo, London, Ottawa, then just a few shows in the states and it was back to Europe!
When I went to study in NYC, from Ontario CANADA, I was kind of shocked that there were not any radio stations playing all the nw stuff we were getting from the UK, I played New Gold Dream till it broke in my Walkman.
Given what Kerr said its no wonder their 1984 album has a lot of tracks very close to prog rock, like Speed your love to me, East and Easter, Book of brilliant things.
Sure, we all loved the stadium minds era but I shit you not,in the early big clubs era Simple minds were the coolest tightest most important band on the planet,,, they blew the roof of everytime!! " foot note,, the first time I heard" Chelsea Girl" you knew they were special!
I have a very fond spot for early Simple Minds, but I do feel Jim and Charlie are taking way too much credit for their success. Derek Forbes and Mick MacNeil are also hugely influential in their back catalogue of songs, and let's be honest, the songs they contributed to, are the songs that will be remembered the most. The lack of band loyalty in SM is really off-putting, and the current line up is a pale imitation of the band they were 'once upon a time'.
Interesting comment. I too am fan of the early days and loved that line up. The original players were a band, they created a unique sound and managed to get themselves on the world's stage. The band that is touring today isn't the same yet the songs remain, and after seeing this current tour I have to say I was impressed at how well the songs held up, even without those other key members. It is tough to keep a line up together for 40 plus years. Very few bands manage it. (I will say Jim's voice was actually better these days than back then, his pitch is vastly improved!) Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Cheers. MRH
What set simple minds apart was the keyboard work , almost ambient , like a wash coming over , you had Gary Numan with a wall of sound but Simple minds had some really delicate and innovative keyboard work until they got pompous after sparkle in the rain
Very disappointing I think. When you.re a pop rock band and you don’t acknowledge the wBeatles as an influence, yoûve got a problem. Maybe that’s why their success span was short lived. It’s like living in the quattrocento and not mentioning da Vinci.
"Success span was short lived"? Are you sure you are okay? They have had 40 years of success. But they should be even more successful than they are. By the way, Jim does like The Beatles. But probably not as much as you. Judging by your comment.
I was fortunate to see Johnny and the self abusers at The Mars bar in Glasgow 1977 and followed them till Sparkle in the rain few great tracks the rest overproduced guff and after that cheerio bland rock 🪨 but The early years life in a day real to reel empires and dance sisters feelings call and its twin then new gold dream there was always progression after catwalk stodge and more stodge but ive always retained a soft spot for them as people and the early stuff was right on the money 💰!🟦⬜
Great bloke. Great live act.
Gracious and talented Jim Kerr!
Thanks for listening to my music and for all the love and support. I appreciate it. Without loyal fans like you I’m nothing.I love you
Great interview with the wonderful Jim Kerr.
Yes! This was my favorite interview we've filmed all year! Jim Kerr was a terrific guest.

Yr a lucky guy
The late eighties was the best time with this band.. the live shows were outstanding. Just would love to see the original line up one more time!!!

Simple Minds is still rated high by many people of my era - born mid '60s.
Its always nice to see a comment from somebody outside of the UK.

an Absolutly amazing band
Superb interview, Jim Kerr, brilliant👍👍
Pure Genius. Love hearing about the history. Thank you for coming to Portland,Oregon.
And thank you for watching. This was a landmark interview for us as well!

Awesome interview!!! Kerr is an outspoken, brilliant man!
I see simple minds in 1981 brilliant then still brilliant

Awww Feb 14 was one heck of a show- so long ago now. Much love and good wishes 🇳🇿 | 🇺🇸 ✨☀️✨
That Toryglen mid-Atlantic Orkney George Galloway accent never leaves him.

Excellent interview. I really enjoyed this.
Glad you enjoyed it! It was thrill meeting Jim, Simple Minds were a big deal in highschool for me!
Great interview you guys. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers
Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers!
Jim, you are fantastcs man
Falta un nuevo tour para Sudamérica. Chile, Argentina y Brasil los esperan con los brazos abiertos. Larga vida a Simple Minds ❤
Si! Por favor que vengan a Chile, amaría verles en vivo
Great thanks
I should have lived in great Britain.all the music I listened to as a teen, new romantic.always a treat to hear brilliance and graciousness

Very well done interview! 👍
Thank you very much. Appreciate you watching and commenting! mrh
He just seems the nicest guy in music!
They put a secret ingredient in their music that makes you crave it fortnightly...
Good advice just go for it
We liked that too. really enjoyed meeting Jim Kerr.
Nice advice at the end
May I allow to add your LP
"Empires and Dances"
"New Gold Dreams"
Such masterpiece ✌✌
And White spaces feat Jim Kerr : " The Man who sold the World" - D. Bowie. Brilliant💖
Good interview Jim. The time when London came to Scotland ... It forever changed after that and the rest is history. Zoom. #hailhailrocknroll

Punch above your weight...best advice ever! In Texas we'd say aim high.
Yeah, I liked that too. Important words for today where it's easy to become complacent amid our technology.
Are Jim & Tim Kerr related apart from last names?
Less Dog & Pony Show schtick in Canada, then?
👍❤❤
The Proclaimers?
Great and I haven't even got past the intro...
Given what Kerr said its no wonder their 1984 album has a lot of tracks very close to prog rock, like Speed your love to me, East and Easter, Book of brilliant things.
i love you da robyi gim kerr
Jim is much friendlier than this singer of U2...he's really down to earth. Could be your neighbor.
Absolutely, (provided your neighbour writes massive worldwide hits). ; )
did not get the Canadian band Jim mentioned he liked....
He was talking about Arcade Fire.
@@Northerntransmissions also liked by David Bowie 👌
Arcade Fire . He sang with them at there Glasgow Concert 2018 .
Simple Minds lyrical geniuses
You are from TORYGLEN

Jeez! what kind of accent is that Mr kerr???
I suspect his Glasgow accent has diluted substantially over the decades, he does sound a bit like a kindly old pastor these days.
Jim Kerr and the rest of these djs are nothing but infomercials used as a bridge into seemingly unlimited commercials.

I have to concur. Without Forbes and MacNeil it's not Simple Minds for me.

@@MisAnnThorpe N'oublions pas Mel Gaynor ! Même si il a intégré le groupe en 1982. Avec Derek Forbes, c'était la meilleure section rythmique !

where the fk did that accent come from?dobber

Although I hate the interviewer, this was a great interview.
... 1:12 through Europe, through UK ... that explains Brexit !
The start of Love Song was ripped off by U2 for their song Discotech around the year 1997 in my opinion!
I'l have to give it a fresh listen.
If we talk about the single version, I can agree. The lp version was a mental wank they wanted at the eleventh hour from Howie B...
Love Song is absolutely amazing especially the beginning. Simple Minds dabbled in Dance/Techno I'd always hoped for a full electronic dance album.
Wtf is his accent all about?
Arcade Fire!! No argument from me Jim! Still not as epic as you! Remember, Carnival in a Suitcase!
Talking simple or frequencies aren’t pretentious or mood swings psychobilly tight.
The worst thing one can say is : my son knows this great band, I mean .......
Embarrassing
