The dog I ended up with was beat by her litter mates also. She's a super service dog! Everyone who meets her want's to love on her, and she is super intuitive about my physical needs and problems. So, if your dog doesn't work out for a guardian dog because of the start it's had, consider it for a service dog for a human.
We raise 30-50 castrated billy goats a year they eat just about anything but the last 2 years we paid $25 a head at weaning dehorned and castrated , we graze them ( run them on our crap ground) a little mineral and a splash of grain now and then last year we sold for $180 average ahead ....this year we are buying ram lambs and goats because the goats have that land in better shape so a sheep can live on the grass that is growing
i for one eat sheep, goat, cow, pig, turkey, goose, duck, chicken, rabbit, and wild / bush meat, not much i refuse to eat the whole animal,. thank you GREG.. be blessed and safe
Greg, one of my dogs saved my life. My house burned in Gatlinburg, Tn. If it wasn't for her, I be would not be here. Thanks for taking good care of your dogs.😊
Beautiful ewes, they look fantastic, healthy and happy 😃. Even if they lambing at 2 years old you have a step ahead, catlle the breed at 18-20 months. Great video, enjoy your weekend in your beautiful ranch
@@thekatt... I like Greg Judy's advise, don't give them too much attention, let them bond to the sheep. Watching grown women displace their familial affection on to animals makes me throw up a bit in my mouth.
I see lamb meat from New Zealand, as expensive, or more, than premium cuts of beef. Sidebar on lamb, Americans think lamb with mint jelly is like a dessert. Try opening a leg of lamb to the bone, and pushing in rosemary, and/or mint. (Close it back with string, or cut with a boning knife along the bone, lengthwise). With mint, the juices will be left in the roasting pan, and just a bit of water, or wine, even spirits, to deglazed the pan, refrigerated a bit, and you will have jelatinous mint gravy. I believe that is what the traditional mint jelly was, not a cup of sugarnin a 10 oz jar of green dyed, artificially flavored dessert spread.
ITS INTERESTING THE CORRELATION BETWEEN DOGS AND HUMANS, THE BULLYING AND SAME PACK MENTALITY.. I DID HAVE A RUNT HYBRID WOLF PUP. FEMALE BEST SMART DOG I HAD. SHE WOULD FIGHT FOR HER POSITION. "Who eats sheep?" Really, it's one of the most popular meats for Easter and Passover, and is top cut on restaurants for leg of lamb, etc. Just check out the section in the grocery, it's getting larger and farm to table at local Farmer's Markets always sell fast.
Greg, do you have a special rotation plan which combines cattle and sheep. For example do they share the the same pasture lands, would you run the cattle first then the sleep.
Have you seen the Flerd videos? Greg runs his flock of sheep with his bull herd, there are a few videos, when he separates the bulls from the cows and calves, then later the young bulls are removed when they are weaned and then go with the flerd. He runs cattle before sheep cos cattle wont feed if sheep foul the pasture. Also greg has 1600acres, so he seems to be able to keep them separate. Greg tries to keep work to a minimum, his philosophy is minimum number of herds. I think he has 3 herds, Cow/calf pairs. Flerd. Rams. I think herd composition changes depending on if he has rams in with the ewes, or if he has the bulls in with the cows. But he should be able to explain better, or watch his flerd videos. 👍👍
Hi Greg amazing footage. I have two questions please! 1) I am very interested in adding hair sheep in flert of cows and goats. My question will the sheep tolerate the copper mix in the minerals I am giving my cows and goats? 2) I have a guard Llama but still the crows and ravens were able to kill 42 of my baby goats in the birth process. In your opinion do you think dogs will be the answer? Ravens are protected here in Canada so I can not even shoot the damn killers! Besides they are clever. Besides they are intelligent. You shoot one you will never see one closer than a mile away. The moment you turn your back they are there, killing.
Greg Judy Great video, watched lots of your videos more than once. About Livestock Guardian dogs. I know you have many and use them as a revenue stream also. I know you are happy to try new things, just wondered if you had ever considered using Alpaca? They give exceptional hair, which is not wool, apparently they have very tender meat, they will attack coyotes, and make good guardian animals with sheep. I think you will have thought about using them, but come up with reasons why they might not be appropriate to use in Missouri. I was watching Gabe Brown the other day and he had a slide that said something like most dangerous phrase ever "that's how weve always done it". I reckon you probably share Gabes sentiments. So I thought I'd mention it. Ever considered farming Alpaca? They wouldnt need any dog feed they eat grass. On soft ground they need foot care.
Our predators have fangs that like to rip the throat out of sheep. We will always have guardian animals that have fangs to balance out the predator pressure. You can buy alot of dog feed for what it will cost you if your flock gets ripped to shreds. I'm sure Llama and Alpacas may work in some environments. We have never had a predator loss using guardian dogs. If it ain't broke and it is working for you, don't fiddle with it.
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher I hear that exlression alot, if it ain't broke....... , just thought you might consider another tool, that might be complimentary, or add another revenue stream, another string to your bow, arrow in your quiver, cos I seen you consulting and all, might not be any good for you, you are right, bad idea from me, I saw a youtube video other day where they were using alpacas successfully against Jackals and Caracals in SA, keep up the good work. Love your videos. Cant wait to see how it turns out in Arizona been watching your latest project with Karen and Ricardo. Cant wait to see more on that.
Visually I have trouble telling the difference between meat and wool. I've seen many videos of how to judge the fat on cattle but few to none on sheep.
That's the main reason I socialize my dogs, meaning : petting them, grooming, teaching to come, walk on leash. Will that make them a pet? No.. Just like Greg just said " we had to catch him ". I have been on so many farms where they can't get anywhere near their dogs, they run away like a wild animal. So what is he going to do now, take the dog into the house 🏠. 🙁

Can't agree more with the idea you need to be able to catch your dogs. Thanks for sharing your thoughts ....I'm soaking it up

Alot of people wouldn't take the time you do with a dog.
Have a good day ⛄⛄😜
I've always wanted dogs. I've just never had a job for them. Sheep may be a good start for me. I'm disabled, and my heart is stronger than my bones...

I think Jo Robinson mentioned in her book about grass finished meat, that lamb has a higher protein content than beef
We are planning on raising sheep soon. Would you please do a video on how you outsource/market them?

Lamb is readily available in my area here on the east coast in NJ..
Lamb is huge in southern New England.

Goats!! Doh!
How are they for predatory birds?
I’d take that pup if I could. Uggh

How do you evaluate the condition of sheep past their wool?
Judge the amount of meat on their backs.
Visually I have trouble telling the difference between meat and wool. I've seen many videos of how to judge the fat on cattle but few to none on sheep.
@@rochrich1223 Google: "condition score sheep".
Visual scoring is simply not possible because ............. wool!
Do you have to shear the sheep?
They are hair sheep, so no shearing : )
Goats can give you a kid in about a year, depending on the breed.
They're ornery though. Lol
I eat sheep. Great video. Thank you so much..

Found out yesterday that St. Croix means Holy Cross
So does Santa Cruz. :)
Lamb is delicious cook it low and slow to melt in your mouth.
Actually, it's hard to screw up lamb. I've tried all kinds of temperatures depending on how much time I had, and it was all good.

tcotroneo no he doesn’t. He said he did give them shelters, but they never used them.
