    There are so many livestock guardian dog breeds that it can be daunting to pick the right one for your small farm, hobby farm, or homestead. First, make sure to bone up on the basics of having a livestock guardian dog, ensuring that the choice to have one at all is the right one for your farm.
    Livestock Guardian dog breeds are incredibly important for mankind. Living in cities and in neighborhoods, it can be easy to forget that the vast majority of the world is made up of cultures and people who rely on herds of animals for food. They exist in hostile territories and needs all the protection they can get. So, these dogs do their part and they do it well. Many people owe them much.

    I have a kangal. Good house dog. Doesn't drool much at all, can be trained. A little high energy, but there's ways around that. A big baby, really sensitive, does stand attention to any noise or perceived intrusion, but if once I say that person is ok or the noise is fine, or he even thinks I'm ok with it, then everyone's his best friend. Good with other dogs too, although he will try to be the boss, of course. Good boy.

    One reason great Pyrenees’s make such great family pets is that they were essentially made to hate nonhuman predators but allow people to pass. Many Pyrenees’s work where there are many people who pass, although they will often bark at the person and deter them from getting close to the flock they rarely attack people. They also vary rarely chase people. Ok n the other hand if you’re a wolf, fox, coyote, etc..you’ll probably want to run.

    If you are looking for "science" Coppinger did a study about livestock guardians. He used 3 breeds and 2 crosses: Maremma sheepdog, Anatolian shepherd, Sarplaninac, MaremmaxSarplaninac, AnatolianxSarplaninac. Of course they were all working dogs, not from show kennels. At the end they were all good, but a bit of preference for the Maremma can be seen, of course the real Maremma sheepdogs, who live in the italian region Abruzzo. The category studied were: aggressiveness to sheeps, attachment to the flock and effectiveness of protection.

    Anatolian shepherd and kangal are different breeds?

    • @kevinbaconeggs3132
      @kevinbaconeggs3132 3 роки тому +5

      the dog in the video is kangal which is a type of anatolian shepherd breed but there is an other anatolian shepherd breed called "malakli" which is very similar to kangal(some people argue it is even better). Overall Anatolian shepherd title may confuse people about breeds. Acording to FCI name of the breed is kangal/Turkish kangal/Anatolian kangal.

      Anatolian shepherd has been used as a blanket name for Turkish shepherd breeds. But there are a few different breeds: Kangal, Akbash, Boz shepherd, Malakli and Kurdish mastiff. It’s to do with the breeding of phenotypes
      There’s a video where it gets explained, it is confusing but he makes it clear and also says why it’s so important to the Turkish culture that the FCI should change their breed description of the Kangal

      An original dokyhi Tibetan is what you after if you need livestock guardian. Ignore all the Chinese mastiffs or pig mastiffs as they are fondly known. They breed for looks and coat not for tempremant. The natural protective instinct in true Tibetans has been breed out. True Tibetans work on their own all through the night without human direction. During day they are usually tied up . Hence the dokyhi. Meaning tied dog. Also a tsang kyhi is what monks use for protection. These breeds do not work the same as dog kyhi. They are specifically work for one master. The history of the Tibetan is fascinating if you ignore the mess the Chinese did to this breed. Now they are not popular and worth nothing there is thousands of them roaming wild allover China because the breeders just gave up because the price fell hugely. Disgraceful. But get an original Tibetan mountain dog and you be hard pushed to beat them. They are one of the original breeds of dogs in this world. Many breeds came from the Tibetan. Including the rottweiler.

I will never get an LGD myself because I would't be able to provide it with a happy life. Those dogs should not be held as family dogs in my opinion cause they're bread for a purpose. Thats not to say they're not loving and affectioned animals.

    Is there a short haired livestock guardian?

  • @wuerzelburg
    @wuerzelburg 3 роки тому +3

    I think the best dogs for this job are the Balkan breeds of sheepdogs.
    Sarplaninac, Greek, Karakachan, Mioritic, Bukovina shepherd dogs. The reason I say so is because these dog breeds never ever stopped of having contact with wolves and bears. They were and more than others still are part of nomadic herding. Nomadic herding and life conditions of these dogs were or still to are, very harsh, resulting, by natural selection, to rouget, healthy, fearless dogs. I very much doubt if Western livestock guardian dogs, like the pyrenees, Maremma, Spanish Mastif had for centuries bred to, or have, actually confronted wolves. Or if they were part of nomadic herding flocks.
    I did not forget Kangals or Central Asian shepherds. I think they are of too aggressive nature

    I'm a native romanian and I grew up near sheep, cattle and everything nedeed on a homestead farm. We had shepherd dogs, native romanian, German shepherds and hunting hounds, transylvanian hound. I still keep in touch with friends and relatives in the country side, high hills region with sheep been kept high in the mountains, involved in keeping sheep. Conclusions:
    - kangal, central Asia and Caucasians fight a lot among themselves. They do not cope with native dogs. They also hurt each other pretty bad. They do bad against bears. They go physical, get hurt and permanent fear from bears. They are too big and too slow to fight bears. They are also too big, slow and not enough stamina to keep with the sheep flocks on the steep mountains. They roam quit a lot and all three breeds, when they are more, they roam the woods at night and kill wolfs. No good for environment. Young ones, alone, get lost in dense woodlands. Also the young ones, during wolf night attacks are lured by wolfs in to the woods and eaten. They are quit aggressive against people. From the mastif/molloser breeds the best results, except the native breeds - carpathian shepherds and mioritic shepherd, have been notice in mastino espagnol, but only for wolfs, not bears. And also not high up in the mountains, only in medium high hills and in the traditional pastoral way of keeping sheeps. The best sheepdogs are the one adapted to your geography, local predators and way of keeping sheep. Take also in mind that sheepdogs work in packs. You need them to work together, not fighting and hurting each other. Also having to manny dogs in a packs will make them lazy and they will fight to much. Wise shepherds in my native country are trying to balance the back with medium light dogs, especially females, hard working how are patroling constantly the saroundings especially when flocks are moving. Wolfs and bears attach during the day too. They also need to be brave and aggressive enough to block the wolfs until the big muscle come. And you need big boys too. Several males how can go physical in case the wolfs are pushing. Also, a good shepherd dog against wolfs is not alwaysgood against bears. Big dogs are good against bears.
    In our native country, the wolf type dogs, FCI group 1 dogs performs better then mollosers. In other countries, mollosers do. Depends on geography, predators and way of doing your business.
    All the best.

    I don't think great Pyrenees should be at the second position on this list, nowadays it's hard to find good working great Pyrenees and even though they are very effective against bears that were always present in the Pyrenees mountains they lost their ability to protect sheep from wolves since they disappeared from France in the 50s. Now that the wolves came back in numbers and that shepherds had to use lgd dogs the number 1 casualties are the great Pyrenees. The Armenian gampr is definitely more effective since it's always been a working dog and not a pet.
