I really love these videos where you are re finishing stocks... something about watching another man rubbing his wood.
Lol
I love high gloss wood finishes on my guns like this. Maybe because I am old, I don’t know. It is just classy! Like those old 1960’s Model 870s and 1100s. Just classic looking.
Excellent. It also helps to start with a gorgeous piece of wood. Good stuff as always, Joe. You really have the ability to make it easier for us to get the most out of our guns and dollars. Thanks for being here.
exactly what i’m looking for. jazzing up my late daddy’s old 336.
thanks!
I would recommend 800 grit sandpaper before the base coat and between the topcoats. It will make the wood grain pop more and also get rid of fine blemishes and hazing between coats. Poly can hide a lot, but prep work is always the toughest job.
Thanks Joe,
I am here to say this does really work very well.
Did 2 custom laminate stocks the same way, I did do 10 coats due to they had no finish to start with. Took me a week to do them but wen they were finished they looked like they had a coat of glass on them.
Yeah man this stuff is I credible
This video couldn't have popped back up at a better time. I am currently finishing a stock in tru oil. It has a high shine after buffing and polishing but not mirror like. Think I may add a top coat now. You're the man Joe!!!!
It's really beautiful. I did my walnut stock with the same result but I did it in a different way. First sanding to 1200
Then 3 layers of danish oil. Let it completely dry. Then sanding until smooth. Then 3 layers of high gloss 2k car varnish. This varnish remains high gloss for years. I've used it also on mahogany stair rails and it's also scratch resistant. So it's easier then waxing and polishing.
Thanks for the tips
Hey man I like your videos to hell with the people who don’t I’m in Texas also I got your back. Please continue investing your personal time to educate us thank you friend .we appreciate you!
You have potential to be the king of the jungle ... ❤️
Lol, thanks
It's this kind of gloss that inspires me to re-finish the 1885 high wall. Keep up the amazing antics!
That majestic postlude music made me want to get my pink feather boa and jump around while yelling”cyclops”. Yea this video is an oldie is right!
Yep but the stock turned out good
You knocked that one, out of the ballpark. Looks great!
Great video. I got a good laugh & learned something new at the same time.
Love the music “Holy Ssss”
Wholly shit, there's tadpole's running down on that finish! Nice job Joe!
Looks excellent! I've been using Tru-Oil on all of my cheap Birch stocks since I started refinishing all of them this month (July '21). But only after Citrastrip'ing, Conditioning, double staining Dark Walnut, then double de-whiskering. It's made all of my rifles and shotgun twice as nice. I'm about to do the same to my RWS Diana 34.
If you like a shiny stock then that's an excellent way to have one. I far prefer satin finishes. I agree with Jack O'Connor who once wrote that he doesn't care for stocks that "glitter like the hinges on the gates of Hell".
Just wow. Don't have words, it's like it's bought the woods soul out to the surface. Seriously amazing. I also love how the music peaks and the holy shit kicks in 😂😂...every video of yours is a joy to watch... everytime.
Thank You
Excellent video Joe👍👍
Thanks Buddy
Looks like myrtle wood. Beautiful
Thanks for the info Joe 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
That stock looks great.
How does this finish take a scratch ? I guess you can buff off with 600 grit and reapply poly . True or false ?
Ty cyclops.
I'm not in the market for SCOPES at this time, but I saw this episode was outside your usual subject matter norm and I said to myself, well, you might not be interested in refinishing stocks, but hear Joe out as you might get some funny ass comments - and guess what?
Hahahahahaha, you didn't disappoint!!I
Good job!
Thanks Man . It’s a blast doing this
Joe man, I love your videos bud. Here in the UK. Its so nice to see Americans loving airguns we think its an art form shooting a low speed rifle, but then we would hahaha... Keep on going buddy... I set up Netflix for a night once and spent the whole evening watching your stuff instead hahaha
Lmao , Y'all stay safe over there man
Great job. Joe. Thanks for sharing your videos and information
*That's some badass wood!*
Looks great buddy I got a few I need to do after watching this thank u sir thank you for your video.
Excellent video. Love that rifle. Hey, I used to work in automotive industry. We used a Japanese wet sanding paper called Nikken. Unigrit paper. I did my old Sheridan 1971 using Nikken 1500 (after 3M 600grit). Feels like glass. I've not gone to gloss finishes yet. On a ranch, dings and scratches are
probable over time. I take care not to, but sheeeit happens. You do nice work there. Keep making interesting and funny videos. If I ever need a rifle refinished, I may inquire. It's so dusty up here most days. I'd be as frustrated as picking up white flies in a clear coat on a hot day.
Thanks for the tip . I'm looking up that paper now
This was way back in 1988. So, they may have more available, and a 3-stage system to use. The bonus of that paper is unigrit. A level surface of the paper. No ridges. No valleys. Good stuff.
Another company called Cyclo makes a dual head oscillating polisher. German made. Spendy, but that system is great. 3 levels of foam pads. I got a blem out of a 1957 Colt Woodsman. So, it was worth it. Mainly an automotive polisher, but you can turn it upside-down, and use it in a different way on awkward, non-linear substrates. Nooks and crannies using edge of polishing pad. The softest pad would be your choice for pre final buff. They have a extra-fine polishing bonnet that
feels like mink fur. That one is final polishing.
I'm doing my ww11 8mm 8x57 and that's exactly how I want it to look!
Any other tips I should know at all. I just really want that sleek shine.
Thank you so much!! Just what I was looking for simplicity. Love your channel.
Thanks Mike
Great video Joe, that is super easy job, to make your stock shine.
Hello would You consider making a wideo about scopes for NRL22? Im trying to figure it out from your other great videos and im thinking about Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24.... But i would like to know your opinion, is getting more magnification (24x) is neeed or 16x and better glass will be just fine. Im asking because nrl22 isnt avalailable in my country but im looking forward to start practice in the way it is organized. Cheers
Man check out the Bushnell match pro . WAAAAAAAY BETTER SCOPE
Cyclops Videos Joe W Rhea Thank You man, appreciate. I will
Joe I like the wipe on poly saw your old video looks great on my m14 stock
“Shows fingerprints” I learned that years ago however my Springfield M1A looked spectacular😂
Really liked this video, I have refinished several rifles using different techniques. I have watched 2 of your videos. Very informative.
Thanks Ray
That's magic!
Of course, I'm saying it in a hateful way because I want to be in an ugly comments video.
Im wanting to do this to an over/under shotgun that was previously treated with Howard Feed n Wax. Stock is in great condition, I just want more gloss. How do i remove the previous wax? And how do you handle the checkering, just apply poly over it? Thank you!
Just sand off old wax . It’ll burn a lotta sandpaper but it’s easiest . Yes I just finish over checking
Great video, I have a ak47 bft with maple furniture. I would like to make it glossy like this. Can I use this on top of what ever the manufacture did to the furniture to bring a gloss to it?
Yes you can! Just lightly sand the old finish first so this will adhere to it
@Cyclops Videos Joe W Rhea
Will do, thanks.
Great video.....great guy!!!
Helpfully amusing...👍thanks.
god job for you friend, love it
Nice Look...Thanks Again Joe 😎
thanks for the video
I’m from Vancouver Canada. I purchased a PCP air rifle. The Woodstock is Turkish walnut.
A lot of people on UA-cam recommend Birchwood Casey True oil. The finish is quite rough on the gun. I don’t know if they put any stain on it or if it’s natural.
I would like to sand it down and make the Gun finish into a very smooth semi glossy black finish.
Do you recommend this product? I can’t seem to find the company website.
It works fine , but would rather use a different product
Great video Joe, but whe need some more turd reviews. Those are a lot more fun. Center point 4x32, gamo bone collector, Daisy pellets... More classics like those👍
I got a bug buster video coming soon
Hoooly SSSShit, I about fell out of my chair laughing when I heard that.
Great video Joe!!!!
I still like my Tru-Oil, but I love a shiny finish. It really makes the grain figuring POP! I'm learning just how little of this stuff goes such a long way. Just enough to flow out smooth. But not run. I even tinted some Tru-Oil to antique some Colt SAA grips in my latest video.
Wonderful video, sir! Do you have a video or any tips for refinishing a stock that is totally unfinished?
Nice video. I have a Service Grade M1 Garand from the CMP. It came with a new stock. It doesn't need to be refinished, just finished, as it has a nice dark walnut stock on it. I am looking for ways to give the stock a shine. Currently I've applied 2 coats of tung oil to it. I trying to decide what to put on top of it after it dries completely. The wood grain is nice, and I want it to shine.
Try minwax antique oil
@@CyclopsJoeVideos Thanks. I will look into it.
Arrr matey. Thanks for the video.
If the stock came with a satin finish do I need to remove that first or can I just apply the poly right over?
If you sand the original till its level , you can finish over it
Frickin awesome! So glad I saw this video, along with some of ur others. I'm using ur approach for some of this stuff and so far I like it. The minwax poly really does wonders on the depth of the shine it seems like vs just normal poly yeah? Looks so good man
Great video!
Thank You
Very nice. Thanks for sharing
I've been seriously thinking about doing that to my sons's Beretta 686. The wood looks nice, but just doesn't have that flare to it and thew finish is pretty dull. I'd like to poly coat it for the sake of water protection since he sometimes has to shoot his tournaments when it's raining. Do you ever use 0000 steel wool to polish or Buff it out?
No I just sand up to 2000 grit after it cures a couple weeks . Then buff out the last coat
Hey buddy, love your videos about finishing gun stocks. I used your method of the satin finish on my AK style 22 ga shotgun on hand carved furniture. I work on the Marlin line at Ruger in NC, and I'm build a 1895 SBL trapper 45/70 lever action with prototype walnut furniture. I'm going to refinish the wood to a high gloss. My question is can I use the minwax antique oil to finish it, then after dried use the minwax hand rub poly to make it high gloss. Thanks man, and keep the great videos coming.
Man I haven’t tried that … but if you sand the finish very lightly ( like 800 grit ) before applying the gloss it should take hold just fine
@@CyclopsJoeVideos thanks for getting back to me. I got a few pieces of scrap walnut I might try it on first just to see how it comes out. The stock I got has alot of really pretty grain, but the finish isn't up to par for me. All the guns we are building have the laminate furniture. I just like the real wood.and it's going to be a one of a kind gun when I get done with it. If you look at my profile picture and videos, that is the furniture I hand carved and oil just like your video said. It turned out great 👍. That's what I like about your videos , you're straight up and give great instructions. The other channels try to be like they are smarter than everyone and make things complicated. Maybe I'm just an old country boy too. Thanks again. I'll let you know how it turns out. Take it easy.
Great stuff, as always. Will be giving that a go on a few of my stocks in the near future
Nice finish 👏
Question will that finish melt or get tacky in hot summer weather? I plan on doing this to my Remington 870 Express.
I'll be picking up some poly!!!
It is TOO EASY
Your video shows minwax wood finish penetrating oil
and wipe on poly. When do you use the wood finish?
I didn’t , it was up on the bench for a different video . I used wrong footage
How do you stain your grips so cleanly and dark, a proccess vid or detailed comment would be great. Thanks!
It's Black Marks a Lot ..No kidding
If I would buff after that I would have a mirror 😎
How many coats would you recommend? Looks really nice.
I usually stop at 6
Damn fine work
I am thinking about buying a lever action rifle made with a walnut stock, covered with a rubber coating. How do I remove the rubber coating from the gunstock
No idea man sorry
Can I use 0000 steel wool? instead of the 600 sandpaper?
This video made my day. I don't even have no wood on my firearms. Well...not in that way >;D
Be well.
That looks awesome 🤘 Love the into and the ending of the video LOL
I know this isn’t the right video to ask about scopes... but.. I’m looking at something to mount on a Savage .270. I saw your videos on the Swfa SS. I’m not on a budget or anything but don’t want to spend a ton. Just deer hunting and messing around with longer distance target practice. Want to keep it under $600. Any advice? I just subscribed thanks.
Sean my top Picks would be the SWFA SS 10X , ARKEN 4-14 AND 4-16 , Bushnell Forge SFP, and the Blackhound Scopes . All solid as a rock . And great buys
Cyclops Videos Joe W Rhea Its awesome that you respond to all these messages and comments. How long can you keep it up though as your channel grows? I checked out the scopes you recommend to me. I couldn’t find anyone who has them in stock, all “sold out” or on “back order”. Do you know any place online who might have them in stock. I’m leaning towards the SWFA SS 10X or the Arkens you recommend.
First thing, your videos and information are great! You are a go to for information on a variety of firearms needs. I had one question, in your video you show things that are needed aminwax wipe on poly and a minwax wood finish. I did see the wood finish in your instructions. At what point would I use the wood finish, I am guessing that it is step 2 after the sandpaper? Thanks again for the great videos......
I just footage from a previous video where I stained it . This finish has no stain on it
I did not know that you took your guns fishing.... 😜 🐟🎣
🥰 i love it men what a great job 👌
Thanks
Can you show how your did the black stippling?? From the stippling to finishing?
It’s black marks a lot believe it or not
@@CyclopsJoeVideos Thanx. Would still like to see the process. Looks like a nice alternative to checkering
Joe, I ask you this on another video. What is the black protectant you have on the checkering to grip to keep the poly off?
lol, believe it or not is black marks a lot . It gives the grip a great look
@CyclopsJoeVideos Okay thanks, I thought it something to keep the polyurethane out of the checkering. I tried putting tape on, but it’s just too difficult to get precise..
Joe,
I’m attempting to refinish my Remington 1100 stock with wipe on poly. I am on my third coat and I noticed a little string of polyurethane. Probably dried from the lid, attached to the stock. Now it’s hardened and dried under the finish. How can I take that off or should I just let it go and not be so fussy?
I tried to attach a photo, but I was unsuccessful. Thanks,
Thank you so much
You are more than welcome
If there’s checkering do you mask it off
Yes
Nice job Joe I do my,n with double boiled linseed oil I luuv to to feel the curves man 😊
I have a Winchester M70 special edition Fagen in fiddle back maple in which I been using for elk and deer but it had fallen over in the field and cracked about a 2 inch section in the ebony end cap right on the top about the thickness of a popsicle stick otherwise no other damage. I have secured it with CA glue but it just annoys the crap out of me that the crack line is still visible. I also fully glass bedded and free floated this rifle but don't feel it would give any hassle as its free floated which can be corrected if need be, so my question is can I refinish that cracked piece without touching the rest of the stock, and would it be just a matter of sanding that area carefully and applying the finish, then feather sanding with 800 grit to blend it to the rest of the original gloss?
You can try , but it’s never worked out for me
Great video! Did you apply any poly to the checkering?
I did . Just super this ly
Damn what a before and after difference. Shines like a diamond in a Asian stripper's ass now Joe. Great job.
Good Stuff Joe! Knife
Any time you want a super high gloss finish on Tru-oil rub it with Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl Remover. Available and just about every store around for about $6. Another way to accomplish a high shine is to rub with Rottenstone with water on the rag. Want a classy
satin look use oil on the rag.
Too shiny for my liking! ohhhh it’s ok if it’s going to hang on a wall I suppose Joe ...... just pulling your plonka mate taking the Micky 🇬🇧
Amazing...
Thanks a lot 😊
Another great video. Awesome finish, you could shave your face in it😂😂
Will this work on already stained wood?
If it's lightly sanded it will
Beautiful 💯👏👏😁👍👌‼
Is there anyway you can do a night vision budget buy for scopes or DIY. Ty
I don't use night vision because when I take it away from my eye I can't see
Definitely understand. I appreciate you always responding back ty
Will it make it waterproof
Yes
Gave me a woody!
Does this method work on laminate stocks?
Yes
Salam dari Indonesia,
Nice!🤙
How would you do a unfinished M1 stock? TTYL
I would start with a sanding sealer . It keep the wood from soaking up so much finished in the early coats . Check out my Satin Stock finish video . That's how I would do it
@@CyclopsJoeVideos will do
@@CyclopsJoeVideos thank you
hey man, what kind of wood is this?
American Walnut
Boiled linseed oil- a coat a day for a week, a coat a week for a month, a coat a month for a year, and a coat a year for the rest of it's life-
Lol yep
Do I get to use it between them coats?
@@EssentialXL in the coat a day stages it would be best left to dry- or it will get tacky, otherwise it is perfectly fine to use, preferred even.....
Should be a coat, wait a week and then sand, oil and sand wait a week etc , takes much longer than a day to through dry
@@trevorspinks3878 by the point of hand rubbing a finish, the sanding is done, the whiskering is done, mud sanding and sealing is done, sealer coat of profin if you do that is done- so when you put coats on the the stock of oil finish they are done as said....
Shit I need two eye patches you just Blinded Me from all that shine
It did turn out really well
