One day my father took me aside and told me he observed my anxiousness and asked me what I was worried about. He suggested we write them down. He then put the list in his wallet and said we’d revisit them in the future sometime. A few weeks later he called me in and said “let’s check that list”. He then ticked them off one by one and of course none had happened. He then said to me “worry is a wasted emotion” “Most bad things never happen”. “If your worry is something you can do something about then do it, if you can’t do anything about it, forget it.” 50 years later I often think of that conversation and appreciate it as the best lesson I ever learned. It’s guided me throughout my life.
You should be a journalist. I would read texts like this every day/week. This is what some of the big news papers used to have, the New York Times had. All jurnalists today are hacks of each other, and never have interesting storys to tell.
Whether you agree with his ideas or not, he is one of the most articulate people alive. It’s a total pleasure just listening to his mastery of the language and how amazingly well he expresses his ideas. Wonderful.
I'm 24 now and I have been following Sam Harris' work for 10 years. I have only read a couple of his books, but have watched countless speeches, seminars, debates, and interviews, listened and continue to listen to many of his podcasts, have been using his meditation app and listening to his lessons for over a year, and I am still BLOWN AWAY by his words. I still find myself excitedly inclined to open my notes and write down his quotes. What a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. Each word seems so acutely thoughtful and precise. In my view, he is one of the most authentic and empathetic minds of all humanity.

Yes, it´s very much diet-related, as well. Many still think serotonin is only made in the brain when we now know most of it is made in the gut. A leaky gut, inflammation, metabolic syndrome, etc. can be at the root of most depression and anxiety. Many success stories out there about dietary changes and mental health. Amber O´Hearn, Dr. Georgia Ede, nutritionist Judy Cho, Brett Lloyd, Emily Penton to name just a few..
I love listening to Sam Harris, he is a great mind, wise philosopher, and logical thinker. I can recommend reading his books the end of faith, letter to a christian nation, free will and trying out his meditation app. He has truely changed my life for the better

It's interesting- around 26 minutes, they start talking about managing and shifting mental and emotional states. I love the discussion, but I wonder, if you know or learned NLP. I know it's efficiency is always being discussed, but there is so much NLP brought to the world, for example with regard to shifting emotional states, letting go of negative emotions, or stepping back from negative situations to gain control over your states. I wonder .....
My pursuit of the idea of well-being began with my father's definition of being a success. He said it doesn't matter how much money you make or what you do. Be the best at what you do. Always. Figure out a way to pay your own way. That doesn't mean currency always. And be happy. If you can check all three of those boxes. You're a success. Obviously I've evolved some since that. Simplistic perspective but it served me well as a foundation on which to grow. And I'm still growing. And I definitely don't have all the answers. The conversations like this lead me in the right direction

Everyone likes a sam harris on tv. Nobody likes a sam harris in real life. Most people i have ever known would just inherently exude insecurity and become competitive and probably toxic. Thats likely how many would cope with just a super mindful calm nice smart person. People hate that shit it’s unreal. They’d almost all become parasitic, or damaging, because the only alternative in their minds would be they’d have to worship him. Peoples egos don’t work how we wish they did. How we talk like they do. Seriously. Think about the sam harris in your life. You probably shit on them. If you don’t you fuckin know everyone else does.

Funny how our brains are so complex that a voice like Sam's is often useful and needed to remind ourselves that we can break the spell of negative emotions with ease through mindfulness or reframing
Tom, This was at least the fifth time i watched this interview. Sam has been an inspiration and a guiding force for me in my life. But i want to mention that without you asking insightful questions and you using your own experience as a source for those questions, Sam's true nature to help us all navigate the mess would easily be lost. I realize it your job to sort of, bring out the best in your guests; and that is what you do so to speak, in this case it is your foreknowledge of Sam's work that really takes this interview to the next level. I feel that what Sam has to offer is so valuable that the onus really falls to in having the ability to sort of set the stage to let that that happen. Sam is so easily over the head of so many people, interviewers specifically, you deserve some thanks. That's all I'm trying to say. He hit the nail on the head when he said that the things worth learning and doing are ideas which are interesting, intellectual but also important. This is why I'm so into science and philosophy. I am not satisfied with a trivial life, I want to know and understand better whats at the bottom of things, and what core ideas are really relevant, which cannot be stripped down into further more. also I want to lead a good life, a life worth living, where ethics, justice and minimising needless suffering come into play. really, in life the most two important values are truth and good - ethics and epistemology. almost everything we do or worry about intellectuall can be boiled down to these two majesteria
To each there own, whatever makes one feel good in life/ fulfilled without hurting others yes. Just makes me think back on the quote by Watts that essentially 'trying to fit everything into words/categories is just like trying to consume the ocean with a fork'. Some things change by observing them. Some things we can never truly observe about ourselves or others in a certain way because we are biased. And that's fine, a lot of joy can actually be found in thought-provoking mysteries versus trying to find out everything and expecting it to measure up to what we find weird or intriguing enough or whatever other measure/ bar / expectations we set, unconsciously or consciously. Discovery and exploring is still very worthwhile so long as we don't expect it to fix anything or to get us to a certain mindset or place. Just my 2 cents/ reaction to this comment, not trying to change anyone or anything
Thank you Tom for bringing Dr. Sam Harris on your show. Of all the intellectuals that one can listen to, Harris is the one that I have always found to be the most engaging in his elucidation of the problems with religion, and how it relates to our current political climate. Familiarity with his arguments, books, and lectures on the subject are integral if you want a true understanding of the topic. Harris just has a way of cutting through all the sophistry and politically correct gibberish that is incessantly used by media pundits and academics, who seek to give religious faith unbridled respect. Furthermore, unlike other atheist critics who leave an emotional vacuum for those whose faith they have eviscerated, Harris' writings and presentations on meditation and the inner workings on the mind has given us an alternative to quench our thirst for a "spiritual" outlet. I appreciate that you have given Dr. Harris time to speak on these topics, at length.

Stoicism and mindfulness meditation go hand in hand as philosophies and toolsets for living in our world in line with the logos. Seeing things as they truly are is at the core of stoicism, and mindfulness is the practice of seeing your own consciousness as it truly is, including discovering what is in your control and what is not.
It's pretty amazing how our brains are able to refocus energy to something different in just a second. What we do don't realize is that we are able to 100% dictate what to focus that energy on. Reminds me of the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Great interview
@ 22:00. For me the great differentiator between anxiety and excitement in relation to the examples Sam gave is this. If I'm going to give a presentation, I have to control the situation. All eyes are on me. That's anxiety. (Angst-eye-ity you could say.). If I'm about to get on a roller coaster, the situation is going to control me. My eyes are on the world around me. That's excitement.

Tom, your letter to your wife to reshift your brain is awesome. You did that on your own. When I was going through a f'd up divorce (cheating and abandonment) I would listen to Pandora comedy throughout the day. It helped me extremely!! I had 2 babies and my husband was cheating and wanting out and my life was falling apart. The constant comedy playing in my ears was life changing in that moment. Now I know why!! I've healed and moved on from that part of my life and now I'm mildly obsessed with becoming more spiritually aware, thanks to your shows❤😘❤😘
Years ago in the 80s Stanley Keleman said that the difference between fear and excitement is breathing. I believe he wrote this in his book "The Body Speaks Its Mind." .
Don’t know the host but cool to see his vibe in light of Harris’ presence. Most people would feel intimidated and maybe going into a mini ego battle but he remained confident but equally likeably vulnerable at the same time
The best advice I ever received about anxiety was that there are three types, two of which you can't control. Neurotic anxiety is created when you ignore your natural and normal anxiety. It is anxiety over irrational fears, paranoia, ocd, opinions of others etc... The solution is to refocus on natural anxiety. Natural anxiety is about things you know you can have an impact on, goals, finances, daily life etc... Existential anxiety is about things outside the scope of your view and power: What happens when I die? What is the world coming to? Etc... The solution is to let go and trust whatever the power over those things is (or trust that the big picture of everything is fine).
Thanks for sharing that advice. Still working on taming the neurotic type of anxiety. If another power or figure controls something, I remind myself, "whatever happens, happens."
I can’t explain how much I love this comment. You have the exact same thouught I’ve come to before also. The difference is what you call neurotic anxiety is what I always thought of as ”being anxious about the anxiety itself” It’s when you go that one level deeper into misery where you don’t even care about basic things that naturally make you anxious so that you would just do something about them. Instead, you just have this ego about being a certain kind of anxious person and you are scared of the most ridiculous irrational things while conveniently not looking in the mirror and seeing all the things you’ve ignored that are making you anxious that you could fix.
By far the most important guest you've ever had here. Hope you keep bringing people of a similar intellectual level, instead of salesy internet marketers. Cheers

For what it’s worth I have diagnosed anxiety disorder and many nights have used Sam Harris’ methods in mindfulness and perspective to calm down instead of having to use my when needed anxiety medication prescription. That’s not to say that the meds aren’t good, or that it works for everyone, but it has helped me personally.
My 2 favorite people... Thank you guys for helping me more than you will ever know..... I was at the end of my rope holding on to anything... and your mindset , wisdom and guests provided me with the awareness of so much.... down to realizing I'm actually a bright person.. something I never thought for one second... keep impacting , waking up and helping other make sense of the things that matter in life.... you are both an awesome gift to our universe

Its interesting how Tom's default is to try to optimize and accomplish things to live a fulfilling life. I find that to be a very western way of thinking. One could have a fulfilled life based off of achieving desired conscious experiences.
Interesting indeed, I do think there exists a nice balance between the two though. If there is only focus on conscious experiences, I imagine the allure of completely giving in to constantly evolving narcotics, VR technology, etc, would be irresistible for future generations in the long run. The conscious experiences and reliefs need to have a strong connection to the real world, and I would think Tom’s way of thinking is beneficial in this regard.
Optimization and accomplishment isn’t necessarily tied to material things. It doesn’t have to mean “ earning your PhD” or purchasing a 7,800 square foot home. I personally tend to think of a lifetime achievement goal as raising my children to be successful, kind, compassionate people.
itscork true but then by you saying successful then that suggests that you want for your children a nice comfortable home, enough money to live on such that they have no financial worries, a big enough house that they can enjoy it, have friends over for dinner put up the in-laws if they are visiting etc. On the whole it is easier to be loving, kind and philanthropic if one has a base level of success themselves.

Thank you to Tom for inviting Mr Harris for a great conversation. I find Mr Harris to be one of the most intelligent, informed, grounded, honest, kind - among so many other qualities- minds currently having conversations and sharing ideas with a delicious vocabulary and a calm, soothing voice that leads me to quiet inquiry. It's a more than just pleasure to listen to and learn from him. Most of his critics appear to be crudely and confusedly incapable to criticize the ideas and concepts he inquires, embraces and debates without turning to personal attacks and follies. To me, one of the core attractive qualities in Mr Harris is his willingness to respectfully and intelligently debate ideas with someone he disagrees with, an attitude that is becoming awkwardly rare in an intellectually hollow yet screaming for your attention, punchline-addicted, social-media way of life.
It's interesting that you say that because although he does listen, I often think he talks too much about his own opinions. But he did seem to be really trying to take in what Sam was saying, which is WAY beyond the average self-help promoters out there.

I meditate once every day, around 20min. It takes not much of your daily life, yet completely changers your perspective on how you view things, others and your self. For example, I am more focused, more calm, get less distracted by trivial things, and find myself less in uncomfortable moods like anxiety, depression, orientationlessness, motivationlessness. And its a very simple task: all you do is just sit down at a quiet place, close your eyes, take deep breaths, then let it come and go naturally, focus on the breath, focus on other sensations in your conscious world and notice them without judgement. If you're really curious you could try finding out where your thoughts originate from or where your self lies.
@@parajdisokincsek8161 It is described right in her post: sit down in a quiet place, etc...let thoughts simply come and go, no attachment or judgement, just focus on the breath coming into your nose or feeling your diaphragm rise a bit, etc. Just let the thoughts and feelings pass by without labelling them. Sit or lie down however it´s comfortable, open or close the eyes, do it as long or short as you choose. No rules at all.

Framing is easily one of life's great mental tools. My personal favorite variant of framing is voluntary re-framing, when you deliberately choose to present, to yourself, this current situation in a different way. Sam at his best in videos like this!

Tom, Im observing that your ability to keep up(for the lack of a better word) with the guests to ask relevant questions to steer the conversation towards a mutual point is amazing, could you comment on how your able to sustain that level of clarity in your conversations with each guest?
That last part hit me in the face, actually, because my uncle -- my dad's twin brother -- just heard that he has throat cancer, and that it looks like it may have spread to his prostate and even to his lungs. We are hoping for the best, because if it has spread, he's obviously in serious trouble. If it hasn't, it's treatable. In any case, loved this conversation. Very good points. Very usable.
Jeez... after just the first 30 seconds Sam gave me this epiphany: my feelings of anxiety (heart racing, nervous feeling in my tummy) are very, very similar to e.g. the excitement of meeting a guy you have a crush on. It's not that far removed -- the difference is in whether you interpret the butterflies in your stomach as a desirable, positive feeling or a stressful, nerve-wracking experience.
HARRIS has a great mind and an ability to have at the same time a very practical thought process. He is almost too smart but also self effacing. Be glad not to cloudy the waters with music in a multi tasking way. Music alone is obviously very beautiful
Great guest and great insights! Interesting how he talks about people seeing themselves as being in their head behind their face and not in their body. I have found that the cure to that is to have a dance practice! Or martial arts like in his case! Movement that is mindful is a game changer!

It's interesting- around 26 minutes, they start talking about managing and shifting mental and emotional states. I love the discussion, but I wonder, if you know or learned NLP. I know it's efficiency is always being discussed, but there is so much NLP brought to the world, for example with regard to shifting emotional states, letting go of negative emotions, or stepping back from negative situations to gain control over your states. I wonder .....

My pursuit of the idea of well-being began with my father's definition of being a success. He said it doesn't matter how much money you make or what you do. Be the best at what you do. Always. Figure out a way to pay your own way. That doesn't mean currency always. And be happy. If you can check all three of those boxes. You're a success. Obviously I've evolved some since that. Simplistic perspective but it served me well as a foundation on which to grow. And I'm still growing. And I definitely don't have all the answers. The conversations like this lead me in the right direction

Everyone likes a sam harris on tv. Nobody likes a sam harris in real life. Most people i have ever known would just inherently exude insecurity and become competitive and probably toxic. Thats likely how many would cope with just a super mindful calm nice smart person. People hate that shit it’s unreal. They’d almost all become parasitic, or damaging, because the only alternative in their minds would be they’d have to worship him. Peoples egos don’t work how we wish they did. How we talk like they do.

This was at least the fifth time i watched this interview. Sam has been an inspiration and a guiding force for me in my life. But i want to mention that without you asking insightful questions and you using your own experience as a source for those questions, Sam's true nature to help us all navigate the mess would easily be lost. I realize it your job to sort of, bring out the best in your guests; and that is what you do so to speak, in this case it is your foreknowledge of Sam's work that really takes this interview to the next level. I feel that what Sam has to offer is so valuable that the onus really falls to in having the ability to sort of set the stage to let that that happen. Sam is so easily over the head of so many people, interviewers specifically, you deserve some thanks. That's all I'm trying to say. Excellent guest, yea it was a while ago now, but still super relevant. Thanks.

He hit the nail on the head when he said that the things worth learning and doing are ideas which are interesting, intellectual but also important. This is why I'm so into science and philosophy. I am not satisfied with a trivial life, I want to know and understand better whats at the bottom of things, and what core ideas are really relevant, which cannot be stripped down into further more. also I want to lead a good life, a life worth living, where ethics, justice and minimising needless suffering come into play. really, in life the most two important values are truth and good - ethics and epistemology. almost everything we do or worry about intellectuall can be boiled down to these two majesteria
To each there own, whatever makes one feel good in life/ fulfilled without hurting others yes. Just makes me think back on the quote by Watts that essentially 'trying to fit everything into words/categories is just like trying to consume the ocean with a fork'. Some things change by observing them. Some things we can never truly observe about ourselves or others in a certain way because we are biased. And that's fine, a lot of joy can actually be found in thought-provoking mysteries versus trying to find out everything and expecting it to measure up to what we find weird or intriguing enough or whatever other measure/ bar / expectations we set, unconsciously or consciously. Discovery and exploring is still very worthwhile so long as we don't expect it to fix anything or to get us to a certain mindset or place. Just my 2 cents/ reaction to this comment, not trying to change anyone or anything
Thank you Tom for bringing Dr. Sam Harris on your show. Of all the intellectuals that one can listen to, Harris is the one that I have always found to be the most engaging in his elucidation of the problems with religion, and how it relates to our current political climate. Familiarity with his arguments, books, and lectures on the subject are integral if you want a true understanding of the topic. Harris just has a way of cutting through all the sophistry and politically correct gibberish that is incessantly used by media pundits and academics, who seek to give religious faith unbridled respect. Furthermore, unlike other atheist critics who leave an emotional vacuum for those whose faith they have eviscerated, Harris' writings and presentations on meditation and the inner workings on the mind has given us an alternative to quench our thirst for a "spiritual" outlet. I appreciate that you have given Dr. Harris time to speak on these topics, at length.

Stoicism and mindfulness meditation go hand in hand as philosophies and toolsets for living in our world in line with the logos. Seeing things as they truly are is at the core of stoicism, and mindfulness is the practice of seeing your own consciousness as it truly is, including discovering what is in your control and what is not.

It's pretty amazing how our brains are able to refocus energy to something different in just a second. What we do don't realize is that we are able to 100% dictate what to focus that energy on. Reminds me of the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Great interview
@ 22:00. For me the great differentiator between anxiety and excitement in relation to the examples Sam gave is this. If I'm going to give a presentation, I have to control the situation. All eyes are on me. That's anxiety. (Angst-eye-ity you could say.). If I'm about to get on a roller coaster, the situation is going to control me. My eyes are on the world around me. That's excitement.

Tom, your letter to your wife to reshift your brain is awesome. You did that on your own. When I was going through a f'd up divorce (cheating and abandonment) I would listen to Pandora comedy throughout the day. It helped me extremely!! I had 2 babies and my husband was cheating and wanting out and my life was falling apart. The constant comedy playing in my ears was life changing in that moment. Now I know why!! I've healed and moved on from that part of my life and now I'm mildly obsessed with becoming more spiritually aware, thanks to your shows❤😘❤😘

Don’t know the host but cool to see his vibe in light of Harris’ presence. Most people would feel intimidated and maybe going into a mini ego battle but he remained confident but equally likeably vulnerable at the same time
The best advice I ever received about anxiety was that there are three types, two of which you can't control. Neurotic anxiety is created when you ignore your natural and normal anxiety. It is anxiety over irrational fears, paranoia, ocd, opinions of others etc... The solution is to refocus on natural anxiety. Natural anxiety is about things you know you can have an impact on, goals, finances, daily life etc... Existential anxiety is about things outside the scope of your view and power: What happens when I die? What is the world coming to? Etc... The solution is to let go and trust whatever the power over those things is (or trust that the big picture of everything is fine).

I can’t explain how much I love this comment. You have the exact same thouught I’ve come to before also. The difference is what you call neurotic anxiety is what I always thought of as ”being anxious about the anxiety itself” It’s when you go that one level deeper into misery where you don’t even care about basic things that naturally make you anxious so that you would just do something about them. Instead, you just have this ego about being a certain kind of anxious person and you are scared of the most ridiculous irrational things while conveniently not looking in the mirror and seeing all the things you’ve ignored that are making you anxious that you could fix.
Trust that the big picture of everything is fine is exactly the same as saying 'stop worrying' and not giving a reason why

For what it’s worth I have diagnosed anxiety disorder and many nights have used Sam Harris’ methods in mindfulness and perspective to calm down instead of having to use my when needed anxiety medication prescription. That’s not to say that the meds aren’t good, or that it works for everyone, but it has helped me personally.

I've been using the words "alter the metric" and it seems a precise match to Sam's idea of "framing", which is both liberating and empowering to me.
Its interesting how Tom's default is to try to optimize and accomplish things to live a fulfilling life. I find that to be a very western way of thinking. One could have a fulfilled life based off of achieving desired conscious experiences.
Interesting indeed, I do think there exists a nice balance between the two though. If there is only focus on conscious experiences, I imagine the allure of completely giving in to constantly evolving narcotics, VR technology, etc, would be irresistible for future generations in the long run. The conscious experiences and reliefs need to have a strong connection to the real world, and I would think Tom’s way of thinking is beneficial in this regard.
Optimization and accomplishment isn’t necessarily tied to material things. It doesn’t have to mean “ earning your PhD” or purchasing a 7,800 square foot home.
I personally tend to think of a lifetime achievement goal as raising my children to be successful, kind, compassionate people.

itscork true but then by you saying successful then that suggests that you want for your children a nice comfortable home, enough money to live on such that they have no financial worries, a big enough house that they can enjoy it, have friends over for dinner put up the in-laws if they are visiting etc. On the whole it is easier to be loving, kind and philanthropic if one has a base level of success themselves.

I find Mr Harris to be one of the most intelligent, informed, grounded,
honest, kind - among so many other qualities- minds currently having conversations and sharing ideas with a delicious vocabulary and a calm, soothing voice that leads me to quiet inquiry. It's a more than just pleasure to listen to and learn from him.
Most of his critics appear to be crudely and confusedly incapable to criticize the ideas and concepts he inquires, embraces and debates without turning to personal attacks and follies.
To me, one of the core attractive qualities in Mr Harris is his willingness to respectfully and intelligently debate ideas with someone he disagrees with, an attitude that is becoming awkwardly rare in an intellectually hollow yet screaming for your attention, punchline-addicted, social-media way of life.
Sam, you are a great example that the world needs right now.

It's interesting that you say that because although he does listen, I often think he talks too much about his own opinions. But he did seem to be really trying to take in what Sam was saying, which is WAY beyond the average self-help promoters out there.

I meditate once every day, around 20min. It takes not much of your daily life, yet completely changers your perspective on how you view things, others and your self. For example, I am more focused, more calm, get less distracted by trivial things, and find myself less in uncomfortable moods like anxiety, depression, orientationlessness, motivationlessness. And its a very simple task: all you do is just sit down at a quiet place, close your eyes, take deep breaths, then let it come and go naturally, focus on the breath, focus on other sensations in your conscious world and notice them without judgement. If you're really curious you could try finding out where your thoughts originate from or where your self lies.

@@parajdisokincsek8161 It is described right in her post: sit down in a quiet place, etc...let thoughts simply come and go, no attachment or judgement, just focus on the breath coming into your nose or feeling your diaphragm rise a bit, etc. Just let the thoughts and feelings pass by without labelling them. Sit or lie down however it´s comfortable, open or close the eyes, do it as long or short as you choose. No rules at all.

Framing is easily one of life's great mental tools. My personal favorite variant of framing is voluntary re-framing, when you deliberately choose to present, to yourself, this current situation in a different way. Sam at his best in videos like this!

Tom, Im observing that your ability to keep up(for the lack of a better word) with the guests to ask relevant questions to steer the conversation towards a mutual point is amazing, could you comment on how your able to sustain that level of clarity in your conversations with each guest?
That last part hit me in the face, actually, because my uncle -- my dad's twin brother -- just heard that he has throat cancer, and that it looks like it may have spread to his prostate and even to his lungs. We are hoping for the best, because if it has spread, he's obviously in serious trouble. If it hasn't, it's treatable.

What does the app do?
Jeez... after just the first 30 seconds Sam gave me this epiphany: my feelings of anxiety (heart racing, nervous feeling in my tummy) are very, very similar to e.g. the excitement of meeting a guy you have a crush on. It's not that far removed -- the difference is in whether you interpret the butterflies in your stomach as a desirable, positive feeling or a stressful, nerve-wracking experience.
He's sitting there calmly but it looks like he was describing his nerves.
HARRIS has a great mind and an ability to have at the same time a very practical thought process. He is almost too smart but also self effacing. Be glad not to cloudy the waters with music in a multi tasking way. Music alone is obviously very beautiful

Great guest and great insights! Interesting how he talks about people seeing themselves as being in their head behind their face and not in their body. I have found that the cure to that is to have a dance practice! Or martial arts like in his case! Movement that is mindful is a game changer!
