Singlespeed Without Tensioner: Putting a Narrow Wide Chainring on It

- Reviewing a narrow wide chainring on the singlespeed drivetrain without tensioner.
The sprocket is 16t and the old chain ring is 32t. The gear ratio is 2.
2 things you need to know about changing to a bigger and narrow wide chainring.
From 32t to 38t chain ring, you need to add 3 more links to to chain.
The half link won’t work on the narrow wide chainring, it requires to have a complete set of inner and outer links, therefore, it has to be removed.
Adding 3 links to chain, for a total of 94 links (47 full links), it is somehow a few millimeters too tight.
The gear ratio is now 2.38.
Is it too tight? I think it is.
Having a tight chain could damage the components such as the sprocket and chain ring.
So how is it holding up? From slushy roads to dry roads, uphill to downhill, I’m pretty satisfied with the drivetrain so far.
How much can the chain stretch? We don’t know at this point but we’ll get into it in the coming months.

Looks great
Great video
honest words
I has a SS MTB where the eccentric bb was junk so I had to just set it in the short setting. I found a “magic gear” combo and it was snug for a ride or two but the chain would stretch just enough to let it spin freely. They do stretch a tiny bit once you ride them, and it’s just enough. All that is moot though if you don’t have a good chainline.
Thanks for the vid, I just wanted to know if ss chain with halflink would work with narrow-wide
hey! thanks for video!
what Chainstay length in this bike?
what chain did you use?
did you ride this bike and how fast did the chain and stars wear out?
Chain brand?
How wide is your bottom bracket shell and spindle?
The bottom bracket is 73mm and the spindle should be around 118mm.
@@DanyoSports Okay. Thanks. Mine's a 68 mm and I was thinking about going with a 118 or so.
Try half link for safety
Or chain tensioner
1. Half link doesn't work on narrow wide chainrings
2. I believe this video was made so no tensioner is used (for a cleaner look)
Is it safe?
for being to tight
i will stretch in a couple of days or months defending how far you ride..
chains don't stretch, the rivets ware and that's why they increase in overall length
@@theOrkinMan1 semantics, really
You need a chain tensioner 100% as your chain wont last long
Sounds horrible. Does your tier scraping against the frame? If you, you are a noob.
