Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) flips and fights his way into the Oval Office.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When a failed assassination attempt occurs on the President's (Cotter Smith) life by the teleporting mutant Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), it's Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his School for Gifted Youngsters who are targeted for the crime. While Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) and Storm (Halle Berry) try and locate the assassin, Cyclops (James Marsden) and Xavier (also known as 'Professor X') seek answers from their old foe Magneto (Ian McKellan) in his glass cell...Little do they know they're walking into a trap set by the villainous William Stryker (Brian Cox), a mysterious governmental figure that figures into Wolverine's (Hugh Jackman) secretive past, along with information about the X-Men's operation, supplied by Magneto through a mind-controlling agent. Meanwhile Wolverine, just home from a failed mission to regain his memory, is in charge of the students when a crack-commando team led by Stryker infiltrates the school by order of the President. With a mansion full of young, powerful mutants and the ferocious Wolverine in babysitter mode, can he defend the school against the one man who can answer his questions? 1:29 I love how they respected the lore behind his powers. He opens the door before teleporting in because he needs to know what is behind the wall in order to teleport safely.
Isn't that what he's doing at the start, too? Scoping out the layout of the building so he knows where to warp? I think that's why he runs back down the other hallway at the start when the one agent thinks there are multiple of him running around. It just has the added benefit of making the agents uncertain as to how many people they're dealing with so there's no evacuation.

They even showed his shadow-blending powers in this sequence. They certainly did their homework to make this flick
This scene basically shows why Wolverine was impressed by Nightcrawlers combatant skills, Nightcrawler is against violence however he certainly has a talent for it.

This scene was so well executed. I like how the agents were all communicating well and working together and they were still outmatched by a single mutant.
It showcases also why they are so feared. If people with superpowers truly existed it would be worse than the Boys and Omni Man put together.

X2 really showed how scary and cool Nightcrawler's abilities are in just one scene and it was his introduction scene as well.
Fortunately for everybody, he was under mind control when this happened. He’s a really really nice guy actually.

Because he is being mind controlled, he has no moral compass and no fear of death.
I personally believe anyone under such a condition is able to do fantastic and horrible things.
Many of the things he did was downright suicidal but because all "he" cared about was the mission he was able to do it. No fear, no doubt, no second thoughts, no hesitation, no remorse.

Thanks, too bad that Nightcrawler wasn't in any possible sequels to the franchise since Bryan Singer left the X-Men to do Superman Returns. Even though I don't discredit Superman Returns, but Bryan Singer belonged to the X-Men universe.

This has to be one of the most underrated action scenes ever. Singer will always have an unreal action scene in his movies.

Honestly, more so. Anyone with super speed can do what Quicksilver did, but this took an extraordinary amount of kill for Nightcrawler to be able to do.

I can still remember the day that my boyfriend and I arrived at the movie theatre. We didn't realize that we arrived after all of the trailers. I was going to go get drinks and popcorn when this scene popped up. I was standing on the steps the entire time, unable to move! I was so mesmerized by this scene that I didn't realize that the movie had started until I red the red ribbon on the knife. Needless to say, we went without drinks and popcorn!

This scene is without a doubt the best superhero intro to a superhero movie. This introduced me to Nightcrawler and he is still one of my favorite Marvel comic characters.

That's what made X Men so good. The government types who were the antagonists had good reason to worry about militant mutants.
What makes Nightcrawler special isnt just his teleporting, but his creative use of it.
Especially at 0:11 with how he used his teleporting to fool the agent that there were multiples of him.
I know it’s late, but he wasn’t trying to be multiple targets, as much as seeing every possible room and corridor so he can teleport freely.
And how he conserves/keeps momentum from jump to jump
@@rvkice23 from the old comic books, his teleports were going to another dimension (hell) so he would always be in a free fall state since he never landed at the surface. (That’s what that one guard from the ceiling experienced lol) But since this is new era everything, its easier to say he keeps the momentum through the teleport. He was an acrobat after all.
I’d like to know how his tail keeps whipping full gaurds around wearing body armor and small arms myself.
and like how at 1:30 he teleported an agent by making some portal type thingy 😁

Seeing this in the theater as a kid instantly made Nightcrawler my favorite X-Man.
I got to give it up to Bryan. He can devise a memorable Xmen fight scene. Quick Silver also had a similar scene in days of future past.

Still, the fact that they used CGI to accomplish this scene doesn't diminish that it's an awesome action sequence.
Look at Jet Li movies. Black mask had awesome sequences. Romeo must die didn't. Both movies used wires. Both movies had stunt man xing xing long doing stunts and fights for Jet li.
You can see xing xing long in a van damme movie called "Double team." He's the bald Chinese assassin with the switchblade being held in his foot.

Whether you consider something action or not is irrelevant it wouldn't matter if it objectively isn't action by any definition in existence, it stands on it's own merits.
Clay Reznor yes your right, but it just looks like he is remaking his own scenes. This is'nt the only one. James Cameron and Ridley Scott do it too, there's a scene in Aliens, T2, The Abyss and Avatar that is very similar.

Nightcrawler is the best. His parents are Mystique and Azazel, and in the comics, Azazel is a very powerful immortal mutant who apparently spawned some of the myths and legends of Satan. So Nightcrawler is almost like a mutant demigod. When he teleports, he goes through Azazel’s demon realm so fast even NC doesn’t know it. The smoke smells like sulfur because that’s what the realm apparently smells like, because of its hellish demeanor.

It's possible that Azazel and Mystique are Nightcrawler's parents in the movies even if it's not mentioned at all. They end up working together at the end of First Class and Azazel managed to impregnate Mystique before he was killed in 1963 resulting in Nighcrawler's birth the following year. This would explain Nightcrawler's existence in both X2 and Apocalypse.
I love that throughout this whole scene, the secret service do not seem intimidated - especially those in the hall - and remain totally professional under the circumstances.
I saw this in theaters with my mom, brother, and step dad. When this scene came on everyone including my family were just blown away. Anytime I watch this movie that memory always comes back to me.

This scene has withstood the test of time. This is probably one of the best scenes in not only this film, but maybe all of comic films. Honestly, just give it a thought.
After 16 years, still my favourite opening scene in all the Marvel movies.
definitely the best fight scene ever in any comic book film. I remember seeing this in theater opening day and people were losing their minds.
A week later, Matrix Reloaded came out. This X2 scene is cool, but it looks like child's play in comparison to what Reloaded was doing. Even then. People in theater were SCREAMING IN AWE during the Reloaded action moments. Then Pirates of the Caribbean came out, Terminator 3 and Bad Boys 2. Even Lord of The Rings (which I'm not a fan of, but whatever). In hindsight, we were so spoiled. 2003 was probably the last great year of the blockbusters. Now we have to contend with shitty, insanely-overhyped, instantly-forgettable comic book films as blockbuster entertainment.
@@tochiRTA reloaded has aged far worse imo. it looks like a PS3 game, hell even at the time I thought the scene against all the agent Smith's looked fake as hell. I think the car chase scene might hold up but still think it has overused cheap looking CGI.

1:35 this sequence right here is so far ahead of it's time. Still holds up to this day. The effects plus the music is just amazing. And this released back in 2003.

20 years ago, i would never have thought that this scene would make the secret service look so much more competent than they really are.
This scene brings back some memories. When I was a kid, I had X2 on dvd and I used to watch this scene over and over again in my room. I loved Nightcrawler so much after this that one time I got my face painted in school and I asked them to paint it completely blue so I can be like Nightcrawler and then proceeded to jump around the playground.
Still one of my favorite opening scenes to any movie.
I remember watching this back in 2003.... By this opening scene alone, I knew X2 will be infinitely better than the first movie!!

Billy Red I mean, for me, it could be one of the best scenes of. The saga (just like the kitchen scene in DOFP), but the lack of proper development of the history ruined to me. One moment, there was tension for the explosion and the death of Havock, Scott's brother. One second later, There was happy music and a cool scene. Dude, one of the main characters was being burned alive. How fors the movie expect me to enjoy that scene knowing that? Xd

Back when this came out this blew my friends and I's minds. One of the most epic openings to any fiction film.
My mom, who is a notorious stick in the mud and a harsh grader of films, was impressed beyond belief at how well done this scene was. She had little to no knowledge of X-men before seeing the movie, she just went to go see it because I wanted to. The fact that even someone like her could be blown away by this scene and the movie itself is a testament to how great of a film X2 was.
Best movie intro ever. The choreography, music, and plot are all perfect. Not 5 minutes into the movie and you know everything you need.

This is still one of the hands down best scenes on any comic movie. I love how he's using his telaportation to make them think there's more then one intruder.
2:01 I'm surprised that I didn't see any comments about how cool it was that he tossed the knife with his tail and then caught it behind his back with his tail before placing it from his tail to his hand. Nice little touch.

This scene is by far one of the best displays of mutant talents along with Quicksilver's kitchen scene introduction in the whole mutant X-men franchise, probably along with Old Magneto breaking out of his plastic prison.
This opening sequence, with the Mozart to boot, gives me chills every single time I view it without fail.
I was a huge Nightcrawler fan, still am. Saw this in theaters when I was in 5th grade going into 6th. This scene still holds up showing Nightcrawler's fighting ability.

This was like one of the coolest movie scenes of my childhood along with Neo stopping the bullets..
Balrog, underwater priates, and darth maul too.
Unfortunately this shows the resourcefulness of a single mutant, who tore through the presidents finest and came so close to assassinating the man, and this mutant can just teleport.

I JUST got done talking to someone about exactly this. IMO singer's nightcrawler and mystique were THE best depictions of how OP mutants actually are... how they can turn ONE seemingly little power (short range teleportation and shapeshifting) into S-tier mayhem.

Considering this was made in the early 2000’s it still holds ups. The effects are legit good and Nightcrawler’s deign is legit good he’s on par with Beasts design when it comes to on screen interpretations.

The CGI was actually really good. Epic scene indeed.
I like that Nightcrawler is actually like a Beta level power classification compared to some of the truly OP members of the X-Men, but he is one of the most badass and useful characters you would want on your side in a battle.

Actually character wise the newer Nightcrawler was much closer to how he’s typically portrayed as like a friendly guy that just looks demonic. Pretty sure he was being manipulated in this scene anyway. But this scene was exactly how a Nightcrawler fight should be.

Nightcrawler has always been my favorite X-Men character, so sitting in the theater on opening night in 2003, the scene really got me pumped

This has to be the best X-men action scene of all the movies so far.
Many don't realize just how crazy this entire fight is. Every single one of Nightcrawler's teleportations had to be deliberate. Carefully selected choices that ensured he always had the upper hand. Especially during the final stretch were he took out everybody in not one but two crowded rooms filled with armed men. The precision Nightcrawler showed off is amazing.
This was a great scene. This is how you plan out something that's visually pleasing. Not a million shiny, CGI things, but a few things, well placed, in a context. Attention to detail and character are key here.

I always loved Nightcrawler so when I saw this at the theaters when I was a kid I thought it was the best thing ever. I still do. With modern day CGI and budgets they could elevate this criminally underrated character. :)

By far my favorite detail from this whole movie was that the filmmakers went out of their way to create a sound effect for Nightcrawler's teleporting that actually sounds like, "Bamf!" From the comics! It's so cool and I can't help but mouth that every time I watch this scene
The fight choreographer and stunt crew who worked on this scene DEFINITELY need to have more respect on their names

Well, yeah, but kicked with thw full momentum of teleporting. Idk how, but apparently he can control that.
@@ninjahombrepalito1721 he basically teleports to a high falling point and then teleports back to deliver the momentum from the fall.
@@tritebs1673 that would take longer than a fraction of a second. Also, he would not be able to teleport to free falling and then back to not free falling.

It is perfect simple as that .the pace the camera movement the music everything perfectly done.i don't think there is a better action sequence that showcases a character's ability in more complete and perfect way. Still blows my mind even today

And there ladies and gentlemen was the ONLY time they ever made nightcrawler cool on screen. Later renditions show him as a quiet, shy emo kid with not as much fighting ability.

Such an underrated gem. I wish they went a few second longer so they would show the part where it says "mutant freedom" on the knife. X-men has always been very political and it has a good message.
