They are really awful them connections on switches, my kids have gone through a couple, the only way I found to get them to last is they aren't allowed to play on the switch whilst it charges

Steve - nice fix, really nice fix... when I use that wire method ( which is a real pain) , I squeeze the end of the wire flat with a Duck Bill plier and I get a bigger surface area to attach to the USB port.
Might be better getting those PCB repair strips off ebay, you can then adhere them to the board with pcb mask too. I've seen northridge fix use them a few times, but I haven't needed to use them myself yet.

Also another tip would be to use a solder with a higher melting point for the first connections, and a lower melt for the later connections, so you don't need to apply as much heat and things don't come loose.

Smal tip for the connection between via and the pin.. Do not use the emaille wire. Cut a piece of rg197 or coax and use the tiny tinned wires of the shielding. For the those via to pin connections.. Any braided wire that is flexible will do.. Even solder wick.!! Good luck! Love the videos!

good work Steve. that's pin does have a via in the centre of the pad. I can't remember exactly what it's used for, but you might find usb accessories or fast charging don't work.

@@anon_y_mousse first option: use short wires soldered to vias (as Steve does with others) Second option (difficult because of difficult soldering): place wire from type-c contact to D+/D- pads on motherboard. You can see them on 4:53 right above big solder blob (two round pads with tiny traces)

Yeah, 2 screws go through the lugs and into the chassis. I made sure they were super tight, but I suspect the kid who plays on this just has the charging cable hanging out of it all the time, so it's just getting super worn!

Dear StezStix Fix, I bought a new soldering iron after watching your channel...but tragically I have nothing needing to be soldered aaarrgggghh. So I changed the cracked plug on the blender and found myself soldering the pins as well as screwing them tight. JUST so I could causally say, 'solid', three times.
Always love your vids Steve. You might want to check that 10 pin where the wire moved under it. It looked to me that the pin moved when you saw the wire but then you stopped checking “solid” at the 9 pin.
HI Steve, check out one of the videos Vince did on the Switch, I sure he traced all the pad\pins incase of damaged pads so he could run jumper wires, may save time if you get another one with pad damage, great fix tho.

The pad that is "not connected to anything" is connected to a via right underneath the pad. If you're lucky, you only sacrificed USB 3.0 superspeed mode, but it might still work in USB 2.0 mode. If you're less lucky, you'll have no data transfer at all. You'll be definitely out of luck to use HDMI over USB-C (in case that Nintendo piece of trash even supports it), but at least you were lucky enough to have the charging pins working. That's a start.
A great fix again Steve. Use of Jumper wire it's look easy but it can be a real pain in the ... The first time when it was fixed. it was a good fix. Makes me wonder how the kids play on the switch 🤣 A viewer from Holland
what I'm noticing always about the port is that the mounting points always survive, so maybe they're not doing their job, they should break before the connector pins come off, maybe add a bigload more solder to those points .. or something
Maybe a couple of tiny screws and nuts through those holes in the port and board would strengthen it up a dab of locktight to be on the safe side as well.
it seems to be about time to teach someone to treat things nicely if you want them to last. It's never to early to learn a gentle touch.

You're alive!!!! Didn't see a video from you last week and I actually for upset.
The pad which is "going nowhere" is the second USB data line. Its via is in the middle of the pad. @4:50 the via is good vissible.
Yes. If I remember it right without it one type-c side won't charge it with fast power delivery protocol.
How would you repair that?

the method of breaking off those wires is much more gooderer thank you :)
Grab some zero ohm surface mount resistors for short gaps. Get a few from 0402 up, they can come in very handy.

I always like to add solder to the pins once in place for a lot more rigidity otherwise they’re just held on from the bottom.
