I once started building a set on my Syntakt and after some evenings just tapered off and stopped. There are some great Tipps in your video to avoid that. Especially the start and end point markers and note taking is *chefs kiss*. Might revisit that set and see if I can finish that now. Thank you!
What I find is very great about the Digitakt is, that it not only has 8 sampler tracks with bells and whistles, but on-top 8 dedicated midi tracks, which one can use to stear a whole lot of other gear or virtual instruments, but all sequenced in the Elektron way, once it is set up the right way. 16 tracks together with this capable and flexible sequencer, this is just great.
Taking sounds from one pattern to the next is always a very nice way to create continuity. We (performing producers) can learn from DJ-transitions that aren't obvious, like when a kick or hihat fades into another and you didn't notice it happening.
Absolutely - it was the DJ beat matching/transitions which was the inspiration for working this way. It's slightly different because the element becomes part of the whole next track I guess...so more like a cross between the transition and a very subtle mash-up??
I made a full track using digitakt, literally thought I could never create a full track thats decent with it. But it turned out amazing. I can perform it live now. I used a lot of conditional trigs. Also, I was going to buy a n octatrack, but I may buy anaother digitakt jnstead. This is literally my workflow in a box. Everything came so natural for me. Im really liking conditional trigs, randomizing thing a little. I do wish there were more artists creating tracks this way, btw I like ur shaker, sounds great. 👍🏻
Very interesting and informative. I just started with the DII and I realized NOTES were necessary to keep track of what the heck I'm doing. I just started in song mode because that was less of a barrier to entry. Once I get comfortable with that, I see myself working more in line with what you have here. Thanks for such a well thought out video. :)
Great video! Just got digitakt-digitone and looking to creating sets! Super helpful tips and advice! I wanna add to what you said about mistakes and the audience's perception. Half the "mistakes" we make, the audience won't know are mistakes. If it's new content, they don't know the transitions or what you were supposed to unmute. Unless you react and make it obvious, most people just think it's part of the show.
I was thinking about trying to do something similar in terms of writing it all down. My biggest flaw is my crappy memory. So taking notes is key to writing and learning a song with this unit. Kinda like writing/reading music with an instrument. Eventually you won’t need the sheet music. Some of the other tips helped as well, but writing down my patterns will not only help me evolve in constructing a song, but will also help me visualize how to recall and tweak things even further. Thus resulting in completed tracks and the ability to perform it live. I haven’t made a song with this thing yet, and I know this is what will make that move along. I also own the Model Cycles and Samples and this can apply to those units as well. Thanks for helping realize this.
As someone who does perform fairly regularly with only a Digitakt, this video is relevant to my interests. I found it incredibly useful and full of good advice. Thanks so much!
I purchased an OT mkII a couple of weeks ago (ironically, from watching so many Digitakt videos), and the concept of 'option anxiety' rings true with both machines. 'I have so many things I can do, but what am I *trying* to do?' You crystallized that so well.
'close enough for jazz' haha! One of my favorite lines. As a professional jazz musician, it applies often. Plus I can't count how many times I have been in the studio, improvised a solo within a group, and the one I like the least makes it onto the album/CD, release. Just have to accept it and move on... These tips are great for any compositional project, imho. Great to set limits and work within in them instead of getting overwhelmed with too many options. Thanks for the reminders/excellent concepts!
Super useful stuff! I would like to add another tip I've got, and that is KISS. Keep It Stupid Simple. Meaning if you struggle with your performance in your safe environment at home, imagine how you will be struggling with a room full of people listening to you... Strip it down and slow down your transitions. You will probably be more bored with your patterns than the crowd. Don't rush thru your set, ENJOY IT!
Its interesting to go back and watch the performed set again after watching the "making of" video. First view was simply for the music, now its from a different perspective to pick up ideas/techniques.
Great advice - particularly the tip from Prince about repeating your mistakes twice so it sounds like you meant it! I’ve a live set coming up so your advice on not sweating perfection is very timely
This video was so much helpful to make my approach to my recently bought digitakt easier an more efficient. 8 also have kids do I have limited free time at night to jam so I needed to use my time wisely. I like the goal to finish at least one pattern per session
Thanks for all this great information! I’m getting a digitakt in the mail tomorrow to go with my digitone, and I’m really excited to eventually get to this level with these machines!
Great video! Thanks for putting this out. I find it so inspiring to see how others structure their processes for creation / production. Very enlightening!
Very useful, I've got a live gig coming up in July and was thinking of doing it all on the Digitakt rather than ableton, this has given me a lot of good tips
Hi again, just want to say this video is the one that got me to get a Digitakt (my first hardware!) , your tips really resonated with how I like to approach creative sessions and how to commit to a flow without creative (or rl) distractions. Thanks so much!
Can’t believe I missed this video until now! You’ve got me wanting to try this myself, and I’ve never made anything like a set. (Also, judging from the date of this video, I have a kid who’s a similar age to yours! I know that feeling of working at stuff late into the night all too well…)
Sat here watching with headphones on, being told off for making various "oooooh" noises by the gf, as a couple of the tips clicked something in my head and I think I've got over a plateau period! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing, I recently did my first ever live set. I ended up following a very similar process but had to learn the hard way about setting myself rules and boundaries. The digitakt can be such a rabbit hole!
Oscillator Sink some other great ideas that I'll steal for next time too. Feeling pretty inspired now. I wanted to ask how you did the poly-sounding elements around the 31:40 mark in the set. Did you have the same/similar voices on 2/3 tracks?
Yeah - exactly that. I do that a few times during the set, but especially on the final 3 patterns. If you want to dig in, I've added the project file to the download on Bandcamp, along with links to the sample packs I was using. Just bear in mind that the current beta firmware doesn't import projects properly, so you might have to drop back to 1.10. But if you do that, you should just be able to create a blank project and then drop the sysex in using Elektron Transfer.
The thing about the Digitakt in particular is that you can do SO MUCH to a sample and shaping a sample you already have is almost always faster than trying to find another sample - and it keeps you out of the menus!
I have a feeling this is an incredibly common pitfall amongst many post-sample electronic musicians. I don’t buy sample libraries nor download a lot of stuff because I often find whatever material I’ve programmed/made or original field recordings over the years is far more than adequate. The point is to make something of YOURS -, not to get lost in endless options.

@@khairitannur I had a headstart as I had a Digitone for a while before I got my Digitakt and the workflow is pretty similar. @@khairitannur I had a headstart as I had a Digitone for a while before I got my Digitakt and the workflow is pretty similar. So if you count from when I got the Digitone I made this set about 11 months in. If you look on the channel though - I was making lots of jams (and those were just the ones I posted)... So it takes practice to get comfortable, but the upside is that practice is all making music so, it's good practice!
Word but sometimes a change of snare drum making a song better butt I get what you’re sayin
Don't sound lame!
15 minutes of video. 14 minutes of speech. 1 minute of music.
Yeah. I mean it's a video where I'm talking about a performance that I posted on the channel. Is that not clear from the title, video description and intro to the video? If you wanted to listen to the set itself, it's linked right there in the video description.
dude don't mumble.
ok dude
for context, as mentioned in the video, I had a young baby when I was recording this video, and they slept in he room next to where I record videos, and I could only make videos when they were asleep. I wasn't going to be speaking loudly.
