I have never seen a penalty shot like this

  • Tonight as the Ottawa Senators hosted the Carolina Hurricanes we saw a penalty shot unlike any other I've seen before. Brady Tkachuk up against Pyotr Kochetkov. If these guys have anything in common, its that they're both a bit unhinged so what could possibly go wrong? Kochetkov made a diving poke check on the penalty shot that sent Tkachuk flying into the boards and he was NOT happy. The two squared up but refs got in the way and in the end, a penalty shot resulted in a 10 minute misconduct for Brady in just a wild sequence! I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

    Kochetkov has thrown a poke check in almost every game he's played this season. He's very aggressive, doesn't just sit back in net, and frankly it suits the Hurricanes well. He doesn't have the best save pct this year, but he's denying shots before they're taken.

      @@rhys.ladouceur4107 It's a highly undervalued aspect of goal tending. A goalies job isn't to make saves. It's to prevent goals. If you can do that by blocking a cross crease pass, or poke checking, or angling a guy to a point where he has nothing to shoot at and just holds onto the puck those situations are just as good as saves.

      Kochetkov is the next starting goalie for the Hurricanes within the next few years. He got his debut in the playoffs against the Bruins and handled the pressure perfectly, almost got into a fight with Marchand lol. His nickname with Canes fans is "Koochie" and he is well beloved. He doesn't have the best save pct but his aggression on the puck keeps shots from being taken in the first place. Being fiery and playing with passion is one thing, but his conduct just reflects poorly on his teammates, and he doesn't represent them well. Wedgewood did it a few nights ago on Kustnesov* in a shoot out, it was a full poke check but he did poke at him as he got in close and the dude shot wide. Hopefully coaches start picking up on this and training goalies. All the fancy moves these players are making they have to look down at the puck to keep track of it and it's the perfect time to be aggressive.

      @@richardprescott5939 Well it's not like back in the 80s they did it all the time but a player puts his head down then yea you do it, it also keeps the players guessing because now they know a goalie isn't going to challenge them. That is why Kutznetsov was so successful he was able to get in very close w/goalies basically just backing up too far and he had a lot of shoot at from just a few feet out. You look at that play and you see Wedgewood not back in as much as nearly all goalie does and he holds his ground and then pounces. Could of probably done it a little earlier if he did a full poke check but I get they don't really teach that so it's going to take some time for goalies to learn it and use it when needed not always.

    Pretty clear that the poke was for the skates, not the puck. The puck was eight feet the other way. He looks at the skates, ignores the puck, and goes right after the skate.
    Nothing a goalie at this level does with his stick is an accident, including "accidently dropping" his stick across the mouth of the goal.

    • @markzoned
      @markzoned 9 місяців тому +1

      Finally, someone who gets it. I'm all for goalie poke checks, but neither of his two penalties were clean plays. As someone mentioned already dropping your goalie stick in front of the net is the same idea as leaving it laying across the crease when pulling the goalie. Also, the point of a penalty shot is that the player was interfered with and did not get a fair shot at the net. Which is pretty much what happened on the penalty shot. The goaltender may have been intending to poke check him but it was horribly timed and he basically just ended up sliding at his feet.

    A lot of people are saying that Kochetkov was for sure aiming for Tkachuks skate instead of the the puck, but it think its far more likely that he was aiming for where he thought the puck was *going* to be.
    If Brady had his head up and saw Kochetkov coming out that far, the natural response would be to try to swing the puck to Kochetkovs left and try to get it around him to an open net. Unfortunately Brady didnt have his head up and didnt see him out that far and so didnt try to move the puck around him, thus making the poke check connect with his skate.
    Whether or not it should have been a penalty or a re-do im not sure, but i just dont think Kochetkovs intention was to purposefully trip Tkachuk

Let's face it, a player has the ability to move the puck quickly left to right. What's Kochetkov supposed to do, just wave at the puck to stop it? Tkachuk had his head down and didn't see it coming. That's on him.

The goalkeeper may attempt to stop the shot in any manner except by throwing his stick or any object, or by deliberately dislodging the goal, in which case a goal shall be awarded. There are 3 things a goalie can not do : Leave the crease before the shooter touches the puck, Throw something, or intentionally dislodge the net.

      If you watch it slow, you can see him look at that front skate, and aim directly at his front skate to trip him. Not sure why people do not see that. Not a Sens fan, and Brady did have his head down. The whole point why Brady was upset, was it was basically aiming at his skate to trip him, without even going for the puck, tripping him at speed into the boards.

    • @ajpdeschenes
      @ajpdeschenes 9 місяців тому +1

      @@joeldijkema5104 Exactly! When I say as a goaltender that he was aiming the skate, it's not that it's something I've ever done. But I don't see how he could look at the puck and totally miss the puck like he did. He was aiming the skate I'm 90-99% sure about it.
      Also, as a soccer player too, who consider myself as really good tempered, when someone is purposely trying to cheat, hurt you or play against the rules, you can really lose it completely. I totally understand Tkachuk's reaction and I think the goalie should have been suspended, not Tkachuk,
