Something similar happened in the FPHL last year with the Watertown Wolves and - ironically - the Carolina Thunderbirds last season. Only difference was it was in the shootout.
It's laughable that people are saying he didn't play the puck so it was an illegal move. This kind of play is designed to take away any last second movement of the puck. Let's face it, a player has the ability to move the puck quickly left to right. What's Kochetkov supposed to do, just wave at the puck to stop it? Tkachuk had his head down and didn't see it coming. That's on him.
Pretty clear that the poke was for the skates, not the puck. The puck was eight feet the other way. He looks at the skates, ignores the puck, and goes right after the skate. Nothing a goalie at this level does with his stick is an accident, including "accidently dropping" his stick across the mouth of the goal.
Finally, someone who gets it. I'm all for goalie poke checks, but neither of his two penalties were clean plays. As someone mentioned already dropping your goalie stick in front of the net is the same idea as leaving it laying across the crease when pulling the goalie. Also, the point of a penalty shot is that the player was interfered with and did not get a fair shot at the net. Which is pretty much what happened on the penalty shot. The goaltender may have been intending to poke check him but it was horribly timed and he basically just ended up sliding at his feet.
Lots of people commenting on the rules of a penalty shot that clearly don't know the rules of the penalty shot. Maybe have a read before popping off ...
What's Tkachuk running his mouth about? That's a legit goaltending play. Good to see that style hasn't completely died off. Skaters have become to comfortable around the crease.
Charging the player from the goal is the best way to close the gap of the goal. If you see it as a geometrical advantage when the goalkeeper closes the gap with the shooter he closes the goal. Brilliant!
I'm 51 years old and had a similar engagement with an aggressive goalie. I didn't get mad when he took me out, probably because I scored. As soon as the goalie commits there's a lot of net, just don't skate with your head down. And I promise it hurt me a lot more at 51 tumbling over a sliding goalie than it did Tkachuk.
Woah, that short scene of skating the river in Ottawa looks like a fantasy land that I need to be in! Also, goalies are always weird, if your goalie isn't weird, he's swiss cheese.
I see nothing wrong with what the goalie did I mean it’s no different than a defenseman who slides trying to break up a 211 what’s the difference I mean if old upchuck had his head up he could’ve gone right around him
The difference is the rules. The goalkeeper may attempt to stop the shot in any manner except by throwing his stick or any object, or by deliberately dislodging the goal, in which case a goal shall be awarded. There are 3 things a goalie can not do : Leave the crease before the shooter touches the puck, Throw something, or intentionally dislodge the net.
I do remember goalies doing that a lot in the 70s and 80s. Skaters who could handle the puck with their head up just went around them. Something to practice there Tkachuk.
Looked to me like Tkachuk lost the puck when he saw Pytor charge out to challenge. The puck got the body. I don't think the trip was intentional. More like a follow through.

B.E.A. uuutifull. Love that style of goalie, reminds me of Roy, Potvin, Fuhr.
Its going to include a Tkachuk 😂😅😂
I love that Hasek style goalie, wow does it put on a show.
Kotchetkov with the pad stack! Awesome!
Imagine having a family name where most people instantly think of you as a hotheaded jerk player...
Thats putting it mildly.
Never seen a penalty shot like this?
Then you've never seen an NHL game before 1990
Good vid. Subscribed.
The Ottawa Disbelief Man is amazing
What a nice calm, respectable Captain Ottawa has.
He got out played and threw a tantrum. Nice goal tending.
Kochetkov waited Tkachuk's entire carreer and his to make that poke check
Old school poke check 😂
Lots of people commenting on the rules of a penalty shot that clearly don't know the rules of the penalty shot. Maybe have a read before popping off ...
Pretty fun save. Players are gonna get wise to it eventually, but it’s a lot of fun to watch this old school goaltending style.
Kochetkov made some new fans.
100% McFly
That's OLD SCHOOL HOCKEY, baby!!!
What's Tkachuk running his mouth about? That's a legit goaltending play. Good to see that style hasn't completely died off. Skaters have become to comfortable around the crease.
This kid is going to be a incredible goaltender by the time he is 30.
You can tell Kochetkov grew up playing Chel as a goalie 😂😂
I love that old style of goaltending. Like Gerry Cheevers, I'm a fan
All sports are considered Entertainment and this goalie is definitely Entertaining.....
@@madadhdbrain read the whole rule.
Tkachuk DENIED! Great hockey play & goalie rocked that save!! Brady crying & throwing a temper tantrum 😂😂😂
Sloth tkachuk got embarrassed
I do remember goalies doing that a lot in the 70s and 80s. Skaters who could handle the puck with their head up just went around them. Something to practice there Tkachuk.
Senators are the grimiest team in the league.
Kochetkov 🤣👏👏
Tkchuck is such a cry baby 🤣🤣🤣
He handles his emotions worse than my toddler.
@@tracker831no kidding
This goalie is AWESOME. Never seen a goalie pin the puck behind the net and scrum with the defense
Kochetkov reeks of Ron Hextall and I like it.
Looked to me like Tkachuk lost the puck when he saw Pytor charge out to challenge. The puck got the body. I don't think the trip was intentional. More like a follow through.
Shouldn't haven't been a PS in the first place
Not a fan of the canes but im liking this guy
Funny how Hasek used to drop his stick just like this 4-5 times every game during his whole career... and NEVER got called!
I’m sick of the Upchuck family in hockey. Can we just ban their entire clan?
