Leafs fan here, I am happy for the Canes and fans. Kooch is an awesome goalie and has a great personality as others in the comments have mentioned. Also loved his goalie goal and celly, great stuff
I love this guy. As a goalie myself I always considered I could be hit playing the puck outside the crease. And if it was a close play I was ready for a collision. That’s half the fun!
One of my favorite goaltender moments ever was in my final year of midget (high school hockey in Canada for all you American's). One of my bestfriends was the goalie on my team and the first game of the year he decided to charge out from his crease to play the puck, the player on the other team absolutely steamrolled him sending his helmet flying as he completed a front flip from the hit then just casually flung his long hair back as he skated over to our bench laughing while all our players on the ice went after the guy who hit him. He was the best goalie in our league and there was quite a skill difference between him and our backup so we got pretty defensive about anyone trying to go after him and he was a large part of why we ended up winning the league that year. We still laugh about that hit and the casual hair fling to this date just over ten years later ..... and he too believes goalies should be fair game while out of their crease to play the puck
The league has it clearly defined. Goalies are not fair game just because they're outside their crease. Rule 8.5 - Interference with the Goaltender Goaltender interference refers to any attacking player who, by means of their stick or body, interferes with or impedes the movements of the goaltender by actual physical contact. While incidental contact with the goaltender may occur, attacking players must make an effort to avoid contact in all circumstances. The onus is always on the attacking player and players who do not make an effort to avoid the goaltender must be penalized. Protection of the Goaltender: A Goaltender is not ‘fair game’ just because they are outside their goal crease. A penalty under this rule will be called where an opposing player makes unnecessary contact with the goaltender anywhere on the ice. Likewise, Referees should be alert to penalize goaltenders for infractions they commit within the vicinity of their goal.
I know it's a rule now but I would love to know when this rule was instated because it wasn't this way back when I played the game. But if you did hit a golaie you knew you were dropping the gloves.
Long time Canes Fan here. I love his feisty ness too. I will say this season has been an unexpected rough start for the canes but we are starting to pull it together. I love Kochetkov but he also was having a hard time finding his stride till recently… which is understandable since he started the season in the AHL and was given the starting position due to Andersen being injured and raanta being very inconsistent
I have a lot of faith in this canes lineup.. however we always seem to win or lose as a team.. it’s never one specific guys fault or one part of the lineup.
Speaking of Andersen, I really hope they gets better. Absolute shitty way to be out on IR. Having blood clotting issues is serious and shouldn't be something that costs you games, a season, or a career
No, goalies should not be fair game to hit while playing the puck. While playing the puck goalies are sitting ducks that have poor mobility for getting out of way or bracing for contact. Goalies are usually playing the puck while an opposing player is skating full speed down the ice, against a target standing still. This results in the goalie being obliterated every time, like all the clips at the end of the video show. They got rid of touch icings essentially for that reason (colliding with the end boards vs stationary goalie).
If the goalie goes behind the net to play the puck I can totally understand not being fair game but when a goalie charges forward from his crease towards the on coming playing, similar to the James Reimer incident which resulted in ebug David Ayres coming into the game then the goalie should 100% be fair game. Do you really expect a player skating at full speed who is on a (potentially) breakaway to just stop on a dime, turn around and skateaway because he sees the goaltender is charging towards him? In that circumstance the goalie has two options, the smart one which is to stay in his net/crease and face a breakaway, or the dumb one which is to charge towards the puck and on coming skater at full speed and risk either getting blown up or looking an absolute buffoon when the player beats him to the puck and pulls it around him for an easy empty next goal. Goalies make the wise decision and stay in your net. Now yes if the goalie clearly wins the race, plays the puck away and the charging player still decides to hit the goalie seconds after then obviously it is a penalty and should likely be a major for charging a defenceless player but remember hockey is a fast game and if you guys skate full speed towards each other and arrive at the puck nearly simultaneous then there's going to be a big collision regardless if one of those players is a goalie or not
What's hilarious is he tells the reporters here he wants to be a forward and score goals and not be a goalie anymore. He is hilarious and everyone loves him.
As a former Lacrosse goalie once we were out of the crease we were treated as any other player on the field. I embraced that by joining in on the play. I never understood why hockey goalies were so coddled once they left the crease.
@@dabootvvexcept we do wear pads. We have no protection down low, tend to not wear elbow pads like the rest of the players, and don't wear shoulder pads (we do have a larger chest protector to protect our midsection from shots). As such, we are susceptible to getting wacked on the elbows (this is a common target from attackmen to "punish us"), our arms, and our legs.
I always loved getting involved in the play. If there was a ground ball near my crease, I wouldn't hesitate to run out and pick it up and clear the ball. I'll be damned if I'm going to allow an attack man to scrap out a ball and shoot one on my crease.
So glad the algorithm brought me to ur channel 😂…goalie here and you have to be weird to decide standing in front of 100 mph puck is a good idea Also love he’s here for the vibes
One of the reasons the league trys to protect goal keepers is that their equipment is meant to protect them from flying pucks where as a forward or defencemans equipment is designed to protect him from punishing body checks. His equipment is tightly fited just for this job, whereas as a keepers equipment is made to allow free movement. You also have to allow for the fact that a keeper can not move as quickly as a regular player, so the keeper is always going to come off a lot worse because of the kinetic energy difference. These are the reasons they try and protect keepers.
For open ice hits it really isnt making much of a difference outside of the helmet that disadvantages the goalies tho it's mostly the assumption they wont get hit that hurts them because idk about newer players but the equipment is really not that much like there is padding on the shoulders, the elbows and for upper body thats about it if anything goalies just lean back from the check so they end up on the receiving end just as any player would they are playing against players that had to thrive in bodycheck opposition since they are 13-14 while they never have thats all.
I like my games played like this guy does. So much personality to every game and you have to adapt as a player not only to teams but their individuals in order to win. Not everyone is into the game turning cookie cutter for how Bettman wants Entertainment delivered from his palms via Toe-Drag-Release.
His 1st game with the Wolves a fight broke out behind the opposing teams net. The goalie decided to join the fracas and Kochetkov had to be intercepted at center ice. Instant fan favorite, that he was good and help the Wolves win a Calder cup was the cherry on top.
Canes fan ...love Kochetkov. There should a an arch line from the corners to say the hash marks...make it green. If the goalie goes past that line he's fair game for being checked....behind the net not so much to much risk of injury.
He probably carried that 52 over from his defenseman days. Which is even more comically awesome! Dude's a stud and he's silly... which means he's infectiously likeable! I'm a Stars fan and I'm cheering the kid on. He's messing up hockey for me! Hope it continues...
Goalie here - we shouldn't be iniating contact, and players shouldn't be able to check us. Main reason is that the leg pads only let you move cleanly in certain planes of motion, so you really can't adjust your body to brace for contact in the same way. It's like hitting someone whose knees were ever so slightly tied together.
Any plays made by a goalie outside of the trapezoid and the blue zone in front of them has long since been fair game for them to have calls made against them
Panthers fan and I hope we get more goalies like him in the future. He's like, what if 90s goalies made a comeback. Love seeing him flail around in the net
When I was coming up they didn't want us to play like the old guys they wanted us to play this new style like the Canucks goalie and I think the old school goalies for a hell of a lot better than to days goaltenders we need more goalies like this again to make the craziest most skilled saves Martin Brodeur and Tim Thomas was honestly the last guys to really do that on a regular basis
Just watch any Bruins game and see how Marchand accidently gives other players "haircuts" as the play ends or the puck leaves the area. His callous disregard for other player's safety will one day result in a devastating eye or head injury.
i had the honor of being able to see him play with the Chicago Wolves and he’s a phenomenal goalie and an amazing personality. he has Chicago’s entire heart ♥
The reason the goalie isn’t free game is because they don’t have the same level of protection. The game would be worse if we more for taking hits instead of blocking shots. We’d also have to change team comps to allow more goalies in the lineup. If a skater or two gets hurt in a game, there are at least still 16 other skaters to use. We’d have to allow at least 5 or 6 goalies be on the bench.
pretty sure the point is more about the goalies staying in the net than it is about really hitting the goalie like in the example there is a collision but not real body check one just braced for the impact. You cant assume you will never be touched outside of the paint now that doesnt mean its free bodycheck just that player dont have to back off from reaching the puck you. play the puck and if a collision occurs (without charging then thats part of the game)
Tbh I agree goalies shouldn’t go out thinking they are invulnerable BUT the serious lack of padding on the back of the goalie means any hits to the back or landing on your back or back of head would lead to a lot more injuries to goalies compared to if you had the same hit against a normal player
I absolutely agree with you. When the goalie comes out of the net to play the puck or like in this video, block the guy off the puck, they should be open to everything the same as every other player.
it seems fair to me that the goalie can't be checked, since it is also super risky to come out like that. any misstep is almost a sure goal. and goalies regularly come out of the crease to cut down an angle, wouldnt be fair to hit them. seems fairly balanced, it's just that a lot of players don't expect stuff like flying poke checks anymore so sometimes they're caught sleeping. On the other hand, I think Markstrom is notorious for coming out to play the puck and letting an easy goal in, so it works both ways.
One strange moment = Kochetkov has regular skater skaters, not the goalie ones. You can clearly see it on 2:39. It is so weird, the skater skates are not good protected from very strong shots. Any idea about that?
Used to be able to hit the goalie when he came out of the crease to play the puck. They had to change the rule cause goalies were getting injured so much.
The russian forward we just called up today from the wolves said Pyotr plays every game like it could be his last game. I also expect good things from this Pominorov(butchered it probably) guy
One reason goalies shouldn't be treated like players as far as hits go is because of our masks. They are designed to stop the impact of a puck at high speed almost exclusively from the front. The impact of a player to the head of a goalie can be life threatening. The shell of the mask is what takes the impact of the puck, a relatively small object travelling at a high speed, is absorbed by the mask and transferred around it. The foam inside the mask is almost entirety for comfort, it's too thin to absorb any significant impact, again that's what the shell is for. But if a player hits a goalie then they have very little protection. Should a goalie be protected from hits? Yes. Should goalies be penalized for plays like that behind the net? Yes, it's interference. The flying poke check is legal but the goalie is taking his life in his own hands. I've done it once and the refs didn't stop the fight that occurred. ;)
That's interesting about the masks. I didn't know that. I do agree that goalies often "pick" opposing players by just getting in the way. Goudreau was fair game in this instance, though, as he was handling the puck. Be careful out there. :^)
Goalies coming out to play the puck can't be treated (e.g. hit) like any skater simply because they're not used to nor expecting to be hit and are of limited supply (only 2). The general rule of thumb is that a goalie shouldn't deliver a check or be physical and in kind, they're given that special bubble -- that should have been a penalty called (it was interference) by the goalie.
I agree to an extent , the clips shown in the video for goalies getting hit ALOT OF THEM have hits the head of the tendy being shown , that imo doesn't count and needs to be called regardless
being an ex-goalie, your balance is just really whacky with the different skates and pads, so it's totally ok that players aren't supposed to check goalies, wherever they are on the ice but the rantaa situation was a different story, lumberg was simply too fast and got cut off, so its not his mistake :D hope kochetkov doesnt burn out and keeps his spirit!
The reason the hits on goaltenders out of the crease tend to get called is because so many people either go high on purpose (which is a penalty), or hit the goaltender away from the puck (which is a penalty). The Lomberg call, for example, he turned his shoulder into it. It wasn't a simple check. If he just bodies into the goaltender, that doesn't get called.
I honestly believe they should add a 24” dotted line around the goalie crease and net those extra inches are their safe zone out side if that goalie takes the risk of being hit
@@garygray2528 why not just say they can't leave the crease at all? why not just say if a goalie plays a puck that wasn't shot at them its a game misconduct. that would really stop that for happening. they already made the no touch zone because a goalie was too good at playing the puck.
@@justinmiller5660 I do agree but even with the small area of the crease I do believe they should be allowed an extra 12”-24”. Just cause the crease is so limited
I think there should be an area around the net, kinda like the trapazoid, that the goalie can play the puck without contact. Even as a canes fan, that call was crap. What does Raanta expect? You play the puck near the circle live with the consequences.
there used to be a time when goalies were allowed to be tackled when holding a puck outside the crease.. theres a reason why it isnt so anymore. goalie gear is not designed for hits and pads + not so agile goalie skates make them too easy target and head gear is designed for pucks not shoulders.
Rules should be similar to soccer goalie is out of the goalie box or goalie crease then they are treated as another player on the field or ice and getting checked is one of those normal player functions
I get what you mean about making goalies fair game for checking but let’s consider how many starting goalies would be targeted and injured. Not good for the league.
To add on: goalie equipment also isn’t designed to take hits like skater equipment. They will be more prone to injury because of it which makes them easy targets.
I'd like to see a bit more ability for goalies to be physical too, but at the same time I understand why it's really discoraged. Goalies are just too important to their teams for them to be allowed to be targeted by the oposition. Imagaine in the playoffs how beneficial it would be for the opposing toam to target Andrei Vasilevskiy for example, when if you injure him you probably win the series.
The nebulous goalie impunity impugns my otherwise pure pride in the position. I believe: I keep out of trouble and scrums because my boys “have to” fight for me. And I think: If I’m going to play the puck, I better play it like a player. There will be no cheapshit, crying, or flopping… Just saves.

Main reason is that the leg pads only let you move cleanly in certain planes of motion, so you really can't adjust your body to brace for contact in the same way. It's like hitting someone whose knees were ever so slightly tied together.
Reminds me a bit of Roy, attitude on the ice, unorthodox play in the crease and personality off the ice.
2:55 right here is a prime example of nhl favourism. Swinging stick at another player and ref looks away. Unreal
I like these breakdowns alot🎉
I absolutely agree with you. When the goalie comes out of the net to play the puck or like in this video, block the guy off the puck, they should be open to everything the same as every other player.
Here in Raleigh we call that a 'Pyoke-Check'! 😊
Haha that’s so perfect
Was that a Pyoke-Check or a Pyoke-Trip? It looked like he only went after a skate blade.
More goalies should be like Kochetkov.
Lomberg looked to me like he pulled back as much as his momentum allowed him to do so.
Loved the video...subscribed :)
it seems fair to me that the goalie can't be checked, since it is also super risky to come out like that. any misstep is almost a sure goal. and goalies regularly come out of the crease to cut down an angle, wouldnt be fair to hit them. seems fairly balanced, it's just that a lot of players don't expect stuff like flying poke checks anymore so sometimes they're caught sleeping. On the other hand, I think Markstrom is notorious for coming out to play the puck and letting an easy goal in, so it works both ways.
2:13 excuse me if im wrong im new to hockey but he shouldered him in the head... isnt that the problem?
Yes
One strange moment = Kochetkov has regular skater skaters, not the goalie ones. You can clearly see it on 2:39. It is so weird, the skater skates are not good protected from very strong shots. Any idea about that?
Used to be able to hit the goalie when he came out of the crease to play the puck. They had to change the rule cause goalies were getting injured so much.
The russian forward we just called up today from the wolves said Pyotr plays every game like it could be his last game. I also expect good things from this Pominorov(butchered it probably) guy
Ponomarev has done pretty good so far in his two games on short notice
I've done it once and the refs didn't stop the fight that occurred. ;)
The puck was right there, it was definitely not interference.
Kochetkov reminds me a lot of Petr Mrazek. Well his old days
I agree, a goalie outside the crease is just another hockey player.
awesome stuff
Entertainment -> revenue -> more star players -> wins -> more revenue
What is that background beat @cunuckhockey ? Michael Bisping uses that as his intro sound, had me like "do I have a video open in another tab??" lol
1:26 That tackle on Lundquist was brutal, yikes
Johnny Bower was the poke-check artist
I'm looking up a history of the poke check. What a move.
Take care of the goalie. One day he will win the cup.
I agree to an extent , the clips shown in the video for goalies getting hit ALOT OF THEM have hits the head of the tendy being shown , that imo doesn't count and needs to be called regardless
🇨🇦This Canuck 100% agrees that goalies should be fair game if they leave the crease! They have a ton of equipment on and are typically huge men!
I feel Goalies should be protected behind the net but once in front of the redline and passed the FO dots your open game
As a Devils fan, kinda jealous of Caniacs having Kooch, he looks like a hoot!
That was awesome on tatchuck
So long as he stops. The puck, he can be as weird as he wants
Once the goalie leaves blue area of the crease to play the puck, they should be fair play just like any other player on the team.
being an ex-goalie, your balance is just really whacky with the different skates and pads, so it's totally ok that players aren't supposed to check goalies, wherever they are on the ice
but the rantaa situation was a different story, lumberg was simply too fast and got cut off, so its not his mistake :D
hope kochetkov doesnt burn out and keeps his spirit!
Love this guy, He rocks!!!
Nice to see the personality displayed the NHL could use more of it.
I honestly believe they should add a 24” dotted line around the goalie crease and net those extra inches are their safe zone out side if that goalie takes the risk of being hit
12” to 24”
@@garygray2528 why not just say they can't leave the crease at all? why not just say if a goalie plays a puck that wasn't shot at them its a game misconduct. that would really stop that for happening. they already made the no touch zone because a goalie was too good at playing the puck.
@@justinmiller5660 I do agree but even with the small area of the crease I do believe they should be allowed an extra 12”-24”. Just cause the crease is so limited
The Florida clip where Raanta get's hit would have been a penalty if he was a player looking at the Geekie hit in Wjc
I think there should be an area around the net, kinda like the trapazoid, that the goalie can play the puck without contact. Even as a canes fan, that call was crap. What does Raanta expect? You play the puck near the circle live with the consequences.
Goalies' equipment isn't designed for recieving bodychecks
Love it!
he's without a doubt someone id follow to watch on another team
You add the love of hockey to not being a young man in Russia right now, and you can start to understand his energy.
there used to be a time when goalies were allowed to be tackled when holding a puck outside the crease.. theres a reason why it isnt so anymore. goalie gear is not designed for hits and pads + not so agile goalie skates make them too easy target and head gear is designed for pucks not shoulders.
Last season when Binnington tried to hit Staal, Binnington himself got bodied and there was no call
I'd like to see a bit more ability for goalies to be physical too, but at the same time I understand why it's really discoraged. Goalies are just too important to their teams for them to be allowed to be targeted by the oposition. Imagaine in the playoffs how beneficial it would be for the opposing toam to target Andrei Vasilevskiy for example, when if you injure him you probably win the series.
he is unhinged like Bryzgalov
0:42 why is that controversial? The Canes were up 4-1 with only 4 minutes left.
I'm in favor of a goalie being able to check players. But only if they are allowed to get checked when not in the crease
I definitely agree that if a goalie leaves the crease to play a puck, he should be fair game.
