  • The Roland SE-02 is an amazingly capable and HUGE sounding analog mono synth. Made in collaboration with Studio Electronics, Roland have created a fantastic sounding analog synth whose sound is much larger than its very compact size! Here's a demo of some of the vintage-style funk lead and bass tones I programmed, that can be achieved with the Roland SE-02 analog synth.

      mmmmmmmmmmmmm ive posted loads of comments on videos on this very point ie all these "nutters" who have the silly idea that to demstrate a synth all you have to do is set up an appagiator/sequencer and just twiddle the knobs ! this guy here is the 1st post where somebody actuarly knows how 2 show what a synth rearly sounds like ! only fault in this video though is that the "heart" of a true synth solo sound is the portamento, which as far as i could tell wasnt used at all in this demo. real shame as it , for me, took away some of its beuty as a synth. cheers

    Is it 100% identical to everyone's favorite "miniature" synth? Maybe not. But, it definitely has the lively soul that makes Moogs so enduring, and I can hear that through six year old MacBook Pro speakers. Thanks for the great video, Mike!

      DGShackleford agreed. Especially for the price. Knobs are too small though. I guess the Behringer Model D will be similar. These are interesting to me even though i just got a minimoog.

    Hello. Have you had possibility to compare it to Sub 37? How does it compare soundwise?
    1.Which do you prefer for lead and bass sounds?
    2. Which one has better filter?
    3. Do you feel limited with EG possibilities compared to Sub 37?
    4. Sound quality of oscillators (comparable to model d or sub 37?)
    5. Lfo possibilities versus xmod possibilities?

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 5 років тому +2

      Frank Macsai I’m not a huge fan of the Sub37s sound personally. It’s a more versatile machine overall but I like the sound of the SE-02 more honestly. And it’s no slouch either. Don’t forget the 3rd oscillators can act as an LFO and do FM sounds with oscillator 2. Also the LFO has 9 waveforms and can effect the filter and oscillators simultaneously. There’s also the cross mod options, feedback circuit, 2 EGs, oscillator sync, and a few other features. Check out the manual on Rolands website that includes the manual for the updates. It’s a surprisingly versatile machine.
      To add, idk much about the Sub37s sequencer but the SE02s sequencer has a song mode with live recording and parameter locks per step.

    For a major part of synths Demos on UA-cam: most of them are a lot of "blablabla" and few a real demo of what they do ...
    I used to look for synths demos, and a majority are just knobs twiddling ( agree with Jerson !! ) and a lack of keyboard playing ( in fact: completely just like as me !! ) ....
    Mike: you are definitly one of the most brilliant and excellent player i 've seen on youtube these last 2 years ( my words: its just engages me... ).
    Thanks for humility and such good way of playing keyboard, great universe and "colours" i heard from your videos.

    Let’s cut to the chase, how’d you change the LED colors to baby blue on the S8???

      Mike Pensini haha sorry, the SE demo is awesome, convinced me to purchase it but if the keyboard is a Roland System 8... how did you mod to change all the green LEDs?

    • @MikePensini
      @MikePensini  6 років тому +1

      They’re still green, maybe just a slightly cooler colour temp on the video.

    Great demo - I went out and purchased an SE-02 after seeing this. Question, how do I connect my Roland 8 Keyboard as a midi controller keyboard for the SE-02? What mode do you put the keyboard in to just play the SE-02?
    Thanks and keep up the great work!

      Great to hear man - hope you're enjoying it! Just a regular MIDI cable - connect MIDI out port of System8 to MIDI in port of SE-02. Just leave the System-8 in the default mode.

      I'm definitely getting one. Looks like all of Studio Electronics' experience with the Midimoog is definitely paying off. I will definitely be getting this one before the Behringer Model D clone.

    Hi Mike awesome job!. I've been trying to copy some of these funk leads and basses but struggle with a few. I'm using a deepmind but if you made some quick tutorials on these types of sounds on any synth I should be able to get a close match. Thanks

    I own an SE-02. I’m a bit meh about it.It’s nothing special. It has something missing sound wise for me. Maybe the envelopes aren’t fast enough. I dunno. I do like the built in delay & the small size. I’ve had analog synths since ‘81, still have Prodigy,JP-6, SCi ProOne & CS15. Personally I prefer the Roland Boutique SH-01a to the SE-02 but the real underdog winner is the Arturia Microbrute with a delay pedal. Such massive sound from its mixable waveforms and amazing filter. Can’t believe you can get so much from 1 VCO. Also, a 20 year old Korg MS-2000, although VA, sounds more analog than the SE-02 and is a wicked bass synth.

      We'll have to agree to disagree on this one! I absolutely love the SE-02. It combines some of the best parts of Moog and Roland in the one box, never disappoints for basses or leads. Each to their own though - lucky there's enough different boards out there to suit everyone!

      Mike Pensini I must apologise. I hold my hands up. You’re right. Plugged SE-02 into a much better amp & speakers and yeh, not meh, sounds great for leads & basses and does really cut. Happy to be wrong on this occasion.
