Stripped the drive cups on mine 2 weeks after I got it from horizon fest. I just replaced them with the metal cups, and put a proline 65 f100 body on it. Got chevron tires and new wheels coming for it, and I installed a TBR wheelie bar on it. Next is a goolRC 3650kv brushless. They’re cheap and easy to mod. Still not sold completely on arrma, but I’m making it tough 😎

I bought two of these Granite Voltages and they have been a blast. My 7yo daughter is learning quick and having fun with hers and I'm learning about the new school of RC. Lipos and digital receivers and digital ESC were not a thing back when I was a kid and into RC.

I did a similar build with my Arrma Granite 2014 2wd, put in a brushless system from OCday (cheap but a good buy), 5200mah 3s lipo at 50c, cheap 20kg servo from amazon, some aftermarket shocks (also from amazon) and the Arrma Raider body for looks. The car has a 54t spur and 15t pinnion. I'm able to push out 70mph and spent $300 in total.

Well I did this upgrade. It stripped the outdrives within a day. I suppose it’s not a grow into truck. Maybe a 15t brushed motor would do ok in this truck and that’s a maybe. The arrma voltage is a really nice first Rc though, just keep it stock. I’m sure the RC driver had the same issue eventually.

yeah i've had a lot of issues with the truck not keeping it stock. I put a slightly beefier traxxas motor into mine (brushed) and it made so much heat the plastic deformed and the gears quit meshing..keep er stock...or fit an axial fan onto it..

Wow. I can't believe it withstood that much power. I know the plastic outdrive cups have been problematic for some folks, even on the stock powerplant. So I was a bit skeptical in thinking the Castle system would work out well. Guess I was wrong. Beastly Voltage you've got there Greg!!!

Just bought a granite voltage for me and one for my son. After watching this video and others like it the voltage looked like a great deal. One run in with the stock battery.. the outdrives broke! Replaced the outdrives and within two runs they had broke on both trucks. I cant see any way this truck held up to that much power and abuse after my experience. Its sad because its a really fun truck to drive.

    • @geodude3966

@@gladiatorfpv3506 I had the same problem on mine. I bought a Granite Voltage back in March, thought it would be a fun little truck to mess around with for $100. On stock brushed power with the 6 cell nimh the differential shaft snapped after a few minutes of running. Worst part is, the diff has been out of stock since Dec 2019 and didn't come back in stock until July/Aug 2020.
Imagine some poor kid getting this for Christmas in Dec 2019, breaking it after one run, then not being able to drive it again until July 2020.

+1 on the Dremel (or any quality rotary tool) recommendation for rc. Might I also add that spending $25 or so on something like the taclife arto 2c (massive selection of different bits) will get you much farther then whatever happens to be included with the tool itself. I'd also add that unless you're spending $100 or more on a rotary tool, go corded vs cordless. You'll get much better torque and usability out if a corded tool in that price range as opposed to cordless. Besides, when will you ever really need to use a rotary tool for modifications in the field?

Trying to decide between the Granite Voltage or the Fazon Voltage for my first RC to learn the ropes on before I buy a Losi brushless. The Arrma will just be for backyard bashing but my background is in racing Losi Ts on dirt tracks back in the day so that's why I'm torn between the two. What's your opinion on the difference? I ordered 2, one for me and my son. So far I have broke a front lower control arm, and a couple differential outdrives (keep a handful of outdrives on hand because they strip and crack easily.
The whole reason I'm watching this video is because my sons granite has already started malfunctioning in the esc. Worked great for about 4 or 5 2s Lipo runs, but now the throttle cuts out or will take off on its own. Steering is also affected, at one point the esc was making the servo max out to the right without even touching the controller. I've scoured the web for info as to what to upgrade, this looks like a solid combo, but I would expect to start breaking more parts.
I knew the Granite would be a beginners truck, but damn only got one day out of it before i have to basically double the cost of it. I may contact Horizon to see if theres a warranty

I got a awanfi 2s lipo 5000mah but it's looking like the balance lead plug at the end is preventing it from closing. Any tips? In all honesty I only tried it really quick and didn't spend any time yet getting it in there.

@@cwatson42785 After i wrote that first reply I cracked the ESC open and it had some moisture in it. We did run it through some decent puddles but nowhere near submerged. I dried it out with paper towels and slapped it back together. Ran tip top for about five minutes but was too dark to see it. Im crossing my fingers thats all it was. Seems fine now.
As far as batteries i grabbed some Turnigy 5000 mAh 2s 20C LiPo, and a Turnigy Reaktor charger. You won't be disappointed with your LiPos. Makes a huge difference. Stock batteries last about 5 minutes. My batteries fit, but are way thinner so maybe some foam is in the future. I just tuck the balance wire into the battery compartment and just let the lead hang out.
Its a great little truck but it will break if you smack curbs or jump it too hard. Easy to work on so far. Worth the 85$ i spent on it plus 100$ worth or battery equipment. Makes me feel like I'm ten years old again, bustin out plywood and 2x4s building ramps n shit

If you decide to upgrade to another truck for heavier bashing as a great value I HIGHLY recommend the 3s Arrma lineup. They are incredibly tough for jumping and bashing and really fast! They also have the brushed granite and brushed typhon that are really tough just not as fast for about 230$. They can take a absolute beating and walk away everytime! This hobby is alot of fun and definitely addicting! And also expensive! Yeah usually once those esc and electronics dry out they will be fine. Set them next to your heater. But if not horizon will definitely take care of you! Have fun nick! And thanks for the info! Also nick a blow dryer would probably help get out and moisture deep in the electronics. 👌🍻

One question, how many diff outdrives did you completely strip with this brushless setup? That is the ONLY thing keeping me from upgrading mine. The out drives on my stock setup strip ALL THE TIME. I have gone through 3 sets in about 2 months. This was a terrible design by ARRMA. ALL they had to do was make them made out of metal.

    • @rcdriver
      @rcdriver  6 років тому +1

anthony Defuria I do agree I’m not a fan of the low cost outdrive design because it could be a potential weak spot when bumping up the power. But so far we haven’t broken a single outdrive. Just the shock shaft.

I 100% agree. When I saw what motor he was installing I thought it would strip the out drive instantly. Mine strips the out drive everytime I drive it and its stock running on 2S.
After watching I wonder if there is just a bad batch of out drives out there. The ones that came on mine and the ones at my local hobby shop were both weak. Maybe I will order a set online and see if that makes a difference.

    • @anthonydefuria9224

@@sonofsega816 the first one stripped within the first 8 min of running this truck, actually it split right in half. I called horizon and they sent me a new set for free. Those lasted a little longer but one still stripped. I've ordered several sets to keep on hand but im afraid every time I drive this truck I'm going to need new outdrives. I understand ARRMA tried to keep the cost down on this truck but these should have been metal. Would have gladly paid more for this rig if they were metal.

RCDriver_Online well, it's been two months. Have you continued to drive it this way and have you broken any diff outdrives yet?
What outdrives can you recommend or suggest for this puppy?
Also, I believe this car requires the chassis to be split apart to access the gearbox to apply heavier grease. What grease would you recommend?
If the outdrive issue is not resolved on this car, constant breakage with upgrading to brushless would end up discouraging me as a new hobbyists.
You mentioned that is hard to keep it straight with the new power, we found that to be the case even when stock. Constant rear wheelspin. We have some Duratrax Lockup tires and a 15t brushed mirror coming in. I am concerned about outdrive durability with newfound traction, even with the stock motor, but we shall see.
I'd love to hear your input and or solutions.

Great vid love the channel, and awesome upgrades for the Voltage. Sweet truck especially for the enitial cost, with the upgrades its probably still a affordable R/C.

      1. how did you make the metal ones? - did you borrow from another rc car/truck? are you worried you may now brake a shaft? I was thinking the plastic diff may be like a fuse.. it dies the rest lives.. if you could let me know I would appropriate it thanks renderw@gmail.com

I got a used arrma granite brushed the other day for $20. Put a brushless 3s vileneon system in it. Cant keep the front tires on the ground. Can rock it back onto the tires with 2 pumps or the trigger. Goes about 55 with stock pinion gear, ordered a smaller one. Got a video of it, check it out.

Would be perfect to get a $30 goolrc system and toss it in here, and get a cheap redcat rxtx. Well under $200 and you’ll have a decent little basher.

First things first, I would not waste my money on an off-road 2WD unless I was going to race or convert it into a dragster. If I am going off-road then I am buying 4WD. it doesn't matter what I buy I always upgrade (it's like a sickness) something.

it has nothing to do with the skill or lack of skill it has to do with the fact that I like to go off-road and you get stuck with a 2WD more than you do with a 4WD. I don't like getting stuck when I think my vehicle should be moving. 4WD snob, yes I am.

Not really, You are trying to tell me that you can drive a 2WD just as good as someone who has a 4WD vehicle up a steep hill? All you did was attack me for voicing my opinion on 2WD vehicles even after I said I was a 4WD snob. You have no idea what kind of off-roading I do but yet you feel you could do the same and not get stuck. I am not here to attack anyone or get in an argument of any kind. with that being said if you can't say anything without trying to belittle or make someone look bad or trying to make someone look inferior to you then maybe you should not make any comments at all.

for your TX for $7...but they sell a 2wd BUSHLESS MT RTR on E bay for only $80.lol
You just need decent 3s GOOD 30-50 C ratings. It'll do back back flips from a stand
still all day long. The only the sucks would be...you'll have to duct tape tires.
