Thnx. I have my thermostat set in the HEAT mode, and I notice that it is running all the time, and not Cycling off at all, so i went out side and NOTICE THAT THE OUTSIDE UNIT is not running at all. Which tells me that the heat that I am currently getting is from my heat strips. Am I correct?. And, if the thermostat is set in the heat mode, and the first stage is not coming on for what ever reason, do thermostats automatically goes to the 2nd STAGE, and brings on the heat strips? You answer will be appreciated. Thnx. again.
I have a heat pump and set it to 79 as I’m kinda cold natured due to circulation problems. It only goes up to 78 and then runs nonstop with 78-79 degree air coming out of the vents. The auxiliary heat is off and it says “heat on” on the thermostat. The air from the blower feels cool to me and this is with about 40 degree outdoor air. I have seen the vent temperature about around 100 degrees with no auxiliary heat indicator on, on the thermostat so I think there is a problem with the first stage. Mabee restriction or bad tx valve ? I think room temperature air coming out of the vents with “heat on” indicator on is not going to satisfy the thermostat. It will run nonstop under this scenario. Any help is appreciated ! Thanks !
Mine is Honeywell .no auxiliary button or emergency heat but I also have natural gas line.temps here are unusually cold over next couple days may be down to zero tonight.
Its 47 degrees outside and i have the the thermostat on 69 and my aux heat is coming on ever time the pump comes on. It shows on my thermostat is why i know and i can feel the hot air coming out of my vents. What could be wrong
Compressor may be bad. Same thing happened to me. Wasn't too cold, and auxiliary heat suddenly appeared on my thermostat, even though the thermostat wasn't set to emergency heat.
I have an 18 month old American Standard heat pump with a natural gas furnace, known as dual fuel. Last year the heat pump switched off and started the gas furnace when the outside temperature was below 40 degrees. This year, even at 29 degrees, the heat pump keeps operating and holding set point. What is broken so that my heat pump no longer switches to operate the gas furnace based on outside temperature?
Most digital thermostats show when aux heat is working. Usually set for temps below 35.

Maybe you can assist me. Thnx for ur videos. What is a "high pressure lockout"? And could a defective thermostat caused the defrost board to show this code. My heat pump board is currently showing this code. The OUTDOOR unit DOES NOT, start up at all, in heating or cooling. There is 24v on the R and C terminals. In the "emergency" mode, I am not getting enough heat. It only heats up to 72degrees only, and runs all night. And never shuts off. This is a RHEEM system. 6yrs old. I am really frustrated now, because i am having all these issues at the same time. I am thinking the thermostat is mal functioning, then I think its the defrost board. then i think the heat strips has issues. I am a wreck with these issues. The indoor unit runs fine, but NOTHING from the OUT DOOR UNIT. I just can't figure it out. Hope you or any other can assist me.
I noticed that my kitchen is colder than my living room and that my thermostat close to the kitchen is running auxiliary heat. Found the source of air coming through the kitchen under the stove and will hopefully get that plugged today. Turned my thermostat down in the meantime. 20 degrees outside 63 in the kitchen and 68 in the living room.
check your upstage timer as well, if its set to a low amount of time your system will kick in higher heat if the thermostat setting is not met, best bet with a heat pump is set a honeywell t series to a pre made schedule , it will heat slowly to your scheduled temperatures
If the auxiliary is on all the time, the control might be set to emergency heat mode, or the heat pump might be broken, or not sufficient for the size of the house. Some controls have a 2 to 3 degree differential. Where they will run without the aux/emergency heat, raising the temp in the house by a degree or 2 without ever using the aux/emergency heater elements. If the control senses a greater difference, it will automatically turn on the auxiliary/emergency heater elements. On a cold morning, I'll ease up the temp in the house one degree at a time. It takes about 5 minutes at each degree on our system. This prevents the aux/emergency elements from kicking in. There is one room in the house that seems to get more heat than other rooms. Easing the temp up helps to keep that room from getting too hot.
You mention that some smart thermostats have an algorithm that avoids using aux heat as much as possible. Do you have any example or recommended smart thermostats for 1-stage heat pump + aux heat?
When I turn my heat, my ac fan turn on also, so I have to put it on em heat then the fan motor turn off and the blower turn on and I get heat, is that normal?
No, sounds like the wiring T stat may be crossed. I have had a install insummer, then winter came and the cool came on with the heater. A seperate service the , said was hooked up incorrect. I think some Tech will "sabotage " your cooling so you will have to call them back 6 months down the road.
I think her system is running in aux heat because the heat pump can't currently heat the space. It could be that her system is not capable of heating at the current outdoor temp, or she may be low on charge. Perhaps both.
My 2 Floor 23 year old house has two separate Heat Pumps. I just replaced the Blower Motor for the 1st Floor. But the Heat is still operating with the Unit in the OFF position. With the FAN in the ON position, HOT AIR blows out!
I usually turn my thermostat back at night to 66 degrees. In the morning I turn it up to 67 or 68. When I do the Auxiliary heat comes on. This morning it was 43 degrees outside. Should the auxiliary heat be coming on if I only move the thermostat 1 or 2 degrees and it’s not that cold outside?
I do the exact same thing with my night-time and daytime settings. It depends on your system and thermostat setup. It is not abnormal in most cases for your Auxiliary Heat to come on if you increase the set-point more than 1 degree at a time.
Just install a toggle switch in the auxiliary heat circuit so you can manually turn off auxiliary and when the outdoor temps get cold enough toggle the auxiliary back on. If the heat pump alone can’t keep up down to mabee 30’s odt then toggle the auxiliary back on. That way you have more manual control of when the money switch is on. Also it’s easier to see what the heat pump alone is doing, and whether it’s working properly by itself.
Thats what im trying to figure out how to do it on my older white rodgers thermostat. i believe its removing the white wire on the thermostat and jumping it to the ground wire but I'm still researching
@ If you’re trying to disable auxiliary it should be the white wire. Just disconnect it at the tstat. Tape off the end and tuck it back in under the face plate and it will disable auxiliary. Power gets sent from the tstat auxiliary terminal via the white wire. Unplug the white wire.
It's 20°-30° outside I have Alexa which is letting me know I'm on auxiliary mode it's 59 degrees inside and I only turn my thermostat to 60 degrees.... And it still comes on????
This is false information at least in most cases . Typical 2.5 ton heat pump will consume 2000 watts. The AUX will consume 13,000 watts . One hour of AUX operation equals 6.5 hours of heat pump . All dependant on the equipment of course .

How many days can I use emergency heat ?
Thank you for this clear explanation of how the auxiliary heat function works for a heat pump.
You have a LOT of informative videos! Subscribed.
is the thermostat the only way to disable aux heat. I Can't stop my aux heat, it comes on below 32 outside no matter how i set the thermostat.
I WANT my aux heat to work when the heat pump is on. I'm willing to pay for it. I want a high temperature rise. How do I do that?

Low charge on refrigerant can cause this....also make small temp changes instead of large jumps

I have a Honeywell thermostat. Sometimes it will display Heat (not Aux Heat) but the gas heat is actually running.

Nest so far for me is doing excellent.
I paid $2210 to repair the problem with the heat pump and it still keeps going on auxiliary heat?
When I turn my heat, my ac fan turn on also, so I have to put it on em heat then the fan motor turn off and the blower turn on and I get heat, is that normal?

Sounds correct the unit runs till it senses it needs aux and aux is different from emergency heat aux uses both emergency cuts off the outdoor unit

It sounds like she may be using the “move to Florida” setting.
If its 11F degrees outside it will cost less to use AUX heat. Once it is above 25F degrees outside it is more efficient to use normal heat.
This is false information at least in most cases . Typical 2.5 ton heat pump will consume 2000 watts. The AUX will consume 13,000 watts . One hour of AUX operation equals 6.5 hours of heat pump . All dependant on the equipment of course .

Any time you go up more than one degree will come on.
Please how do I get my auxiliary heat to go off?thanks.
