  • This is the end result of just over a week of early morning starts heading down to the local train station while I was on holiday (Burry Port South Wales) This holiday was actually two weeks but unfortunately I only found out about the freight trains about half way through the first week when at about 06:30 in the morning I heard something that sound like it was worth while getting out of bed for, and boy was it worth it.
    These trains around the 2500 tons of loaded oil train heading out of Pembroke oil refinery heading to various places around the country, with empties and light engine move made in the late afternoon to evening.
    All the train were double headed meaning there is 6500 horse power at hand to move the loaded train with almost ease.
    It was incredible to finally see the real life Revolution Trains TEA tankers hurtling along and speed along the Welsh coast line.... Amazing to witness.

    Until recently they ran 2 trains a day hauled by class 60 and before that I recorded them with 3 x 37s. Their running times are available daily on "Realtime Trains" giving their passing times throughout the whole route, so it's no surprise when they pass.

    6B13 runs loaded tanks daily to the Murco depot at Westerleigh Junction just north of Bristol. Was always a class 60 duty until DB recently withdrew them, now it requires 2 x cl.66 to haul 21 tanks apparently, whereas the class 60 frequently handled 28/29, allbeit with banking assistance in the Swansea area. Thanks for the video, nice to see semaphore sigs.

    Where have you been then?. Class 60 tugs have been pulling 29-32 loaded oil tanks for years on that route. They all take the swansea & district toward port talbot. Their startoff pulling power is legendary. Sadly they were unreliable! But nevertheless, a magnificent sight to behold. Those 66 are truly ugly though.

      @@williamdavies3295 So we stayed in the village/small town of Burry Port South Wales, and the station was literally a 2 minute walk from where we were staying.
      I would of absolutely loved a class 60 pulling g 29+. I've never seen a class 60 up close, only through trees from the Kennet and Avon Canal on the oil trains that run through on that line. Don't they match the class 59 for pulling power?

    I think the caption 6B13 at 3:00 maybe incorrect, as these appear to be the empty tanks returning westwards to Robeston (6B47?). 6B13 is allocated to the fully loaded eastbound working to Westerleigh.

      What is it with UA-cam commenters who think they know more about a company's operations than the company itself? Instead of sitting there wondering how the experts could be so stupid, ask yourself what you're missing. Assuming that the class 60s aren't simply broken (though that's entirely possible for 35-year-old locomotives), the most likely explanation is that it's very expensive to maintain a small fleet of unreliable locomotives for just one purpose -- apart from everything else, you need a large inventory of spare parts. A pair of 66s can handle the train well enough, so it's easier to just do that.

    • @DOCTORDROTT
      @DOCTORDROTT Місяць тому +2

      Wrong, it does, I worked on class 60 and 66's from new. Class 60's always needed extra TLC . the CUSTOMER comes first, it was let down by niggly faults on class 60's. DBC HAD to show the customer it was committed. So put two 66's on for reliability, now regeared 66's hopefully that will work.

    • @DOCTORDROTT
      @DOCTORDROTT Місяць тому +2

      @@beeble2003 correct, I worked for BR Transrail / EWS / DBC and saw the issues first hand on having to fix failed class 60's on that train. Main issues ........starter motor abutments, Power earth faults, AWS / brake sensor faults and coolant leaks. Expensive to maintain and high engine hours reached.
