  • In this video I speak with the man who literally wrote the book(s) on backyard rollercoasters: Paul Gregg. Check out my sponsor Brilliant for a really fun way to learn! www.Brilliant....
I'm calling this a 'how to' video, but really it's deeper than that. This is a dive into what it takes to design a backyard rollercoaster. I took a lot of inspiration for the style of this video from Destin at Smarter Every Day. Let me know if you'd like to see more of this type of video on my channel!
Paul Gregg is a retired aerospace engineer who I spent the day with learning about his backyard rollercoasters. His rollercoasters are designed and tested to the same standards as airplanes, which is incredible considering the materials to build them are available at any hardware store. Paul has made backyard rollercoasters accessible to anyone with basic tools and a yard to work in.
    Visit Paul Gregg's UA-cam channel here: / psg20101
You can find Paul's books and other information about building your own rollercoaster on his website: backyardroller...
This was a very ambitious video to film as it was the first on my channel that required significant travel expenses. It's thanks to viewers like you supporting me on Patreon that I'm able to continue making videos and strive to constantly improve them. Thank you so much for your support, and a special thanks to my top Patrons: Enzo Breda Lee & TheBackyardScientist!

Have you watched other 360 videoes? I remember theres one from a guy who wind suits, where he stuch the camera on his helmet with a stick. You can't see the stick in the video however because it is in the blind spot. You can see his helmet however, so it looks as if the camera's floating on top of his head.
I know 360 cameras are basically 2 wide angle lens cameras back-to-back. So the stuffs at the top and bottom are the least clear and distorted.

Paul Gregg is an incredible guy with a staggering wealth of knowledge and experience in engineering and related disciplines. As Paul speaks about the topics of his expertise, he does so all while maintaining an admirable humility which I hope you get a sense of in this video. Make no mistake, Paul is an expert, but also a kid at heart. My favorite kind of person. Check out Paul's website and UA-cam channel through the links in the video description.

It shouldn't be too difficult to correct this in whatever video editor you use. Plus it looks to be a common problem, so there's loads of tutorials for various software.

It's really tough to film a video like this with a regular camera. I'm not sure I have the skill to have done it without someone else there to film for me. The 360 camera gave me the ability to get the job done by myself. Maybe someday this channel will make enough money to hire an assistant and I won't have to mess with such things. I appreciate the feedback though! I may be able to tone down the 360 feel if I make another video like this by managing the footage differently.

To add a little more thought on the acceleration issue, these small coasters of mine have much smaller track dip radius of curvature than a professional roller coaster, so it's a concern for me if I have a taller person ride. But, professional roller coasters have much larger track radius of curvature in dips, so the effect is much less pronounced. I believe professionals design to what is called the "heartline" first, which is a 3D path your chest/head takes through space, then they design the track offset from that 3D spline.

Actually there are a few (modern) rollercoasters that have a (near) perfectly circular loop. However coasters with these loops tend to have a lot of “hangtime” by going very slowly through the top of the loop. That and having a large enough radius is how they keep the g-forces in check. One example of a rollercoaster with a (very) circular loop is Copperhead Strike at Carowinds.

this just shows how perfectly designed rollercoasters are. because even this is really a rough ride when its designed by a plane engineer. and it takes alot to make a rollercoaster have a smooth ride

These coasters are a smooth ride for the size person they were designed for. The math is done differently for adults.

I Just wanted to make a comment related to your Channel Name. One night, camping on the very top of a mountain in NE Wa, in a clearing where I could watch the stars, I got up around 4 AM as the sky was just showing light. A Night Hawk flew over to me and flew around me 7 times in a perfect circle probably 15 ft away from me, then flew off. I was amazed and spun myself around with the Hawk the whole time to keep my eyes on him. I must have looked pretty funny, lol! A few minutes later it came back and flew around me again 10 times then landed on top of my van on my XM antennae which looked like a mouse with about 6 inches of the wire showing like a tail, LOL. Amazing experience! It was beautiful! Another time while bleeding the brakes on a motorcycle, pumping the brake, squeaking drew in 3 hawks who perched above me on a tree branch. They actually made me nervous as I've seen them in action close up with a friend who rehabilitates injured or displaced birds, his were Cooper Hawks, he learned to use them for hunting. He said they were far better than a shotgun. Thanks for your work, inspired me to share when I saw your name.

As a coaster enthusiast, you've got to thing about g forces when you build things like these. If you make an extremely forceful ride with a heavy cart, the track may not be able to take it. That's why actual coasters have a back spine
