Had a friend show me how to do this in person and then IMMEDIATELY lost the ability to do it when I was alone. I must have watched 8 videos before this one trying to get it back and was so frustrated, but your steady pace and the "swivel and scoop" description made sense almost right away! Thank you so much! ❤️
Same!! I've watched 4 and hers was the one that I finally got it! Other videos were too fast (and even slowing down the playback speed didn't help) and didn't show every step (like their hands would be in the way of the camera etc). Marly's videos are so helpful:)
Very enlightening! I've been knitting for nearly 40 years (with hiatuses), but feel like a newbie watching this - I've always used long tail cast on, until recently I didn't even know other ways exist!
This video is the 4th one I've watched trying to do knit cast on and it is the only one that was easy to follow and see every step:) I loved how you did a few cast on stitches to make sure we got it. Thank you!♡♡♡
A dear friend is teaching me to knit, and she showed me this, 'this makes the strongest edge'. So thank you, bc since we don't cast on all the time, I needed this
I love the way you explain and this is the best way I have seen so far. My granddaughter is teaching me to knit. I am over 60 years and she is an amazing teacher and now I see you have the same qualities. Thank you for this video and I have subscribed your videos.
Thank you so much for this video and all of your other videos! I am a new knitter and I am finally able to understand this beautiful craft because of your great instruction and video. I especially loved them all with your sweet momma when she was beginning to knit. I hope more videos with her are planned in the future. Thank you again and God Bless you and your family.
You are the best teacher! You allow the learner to perform the technique during your tutorials. You take your time, you never rush. I got it the first time! I'm going to love this new cast on, no more measuring yarn. What a relief! Thank you, Marly 🤗
Thank you for your quick reply! I am an absolute knitting beginner and am just now finding the confidence to try a pattern. Tension has been tricky for me. I will be 62 on May 15, so I guess it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks! Love this cast on!!
Hello Marly. Discovering all your UA-cam videos. I subscribed, you are SO good! The way I was taught was after the wrap just scoop the stitch on the right needle over an onto the left needle. I've tried both ways and I notice your way the stitches are smaller and tighter, my way they are larger and looser.
This is such a great cast on stitch for beginners. My mom taught this to me when I was a child to make me more self sufficient. It creates a very secure first row of stitches and I was always successful with this method. And now, I have to explore and learn about the other ways....
Thank you for this excellent teaching, i finaly cought on to the detail.i watched at work and at home to i got it. Thanks now i am ready to learn to knit.
I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. I appreciate it. I'm going to try this because when I do a long tail cast on, it is either not enough or way too much. Again, thank you.
I have been trying to crochet all summer and I have hit a frustration point with it. I am going to take a break from that and give knitting a try. This looks like you have more control of your yarn and keeping your rows straight. We'll see how it goes. This looks like a good place to start.
Thank you for this tutorial. Usually I do the long tail but it usually takes me three tries - not enough yarn to finish the cast on, or too much yarn left after cast on. I need to cast on 150-200 cast ons so this cast on is perfect. Again, thank you for your tutorial. Barbara
THANK YOU so much for this! I'm a self-taught knitter so I have had to learn everything by trial and error. The long tail cast-on always frustrated me because either I wasted so much yarn or I didn't calculate correctly and had to start over. NEVER AGAIN! THANK YOU!
Catherine E. Lewis no don’t waste yarn, it’s super easy to judge. For each cast on stitch you want to make, wrap the yarn around the knitting needle. Example, if you want to make 10 cast on stitches, wrap the yarn around the needle 10 times. It’s easy. I personally don’t like this cast on at all. Long tail is the way to go or twisted German
I'm a new-ish knitter, making my first sweater and it calls for a "knitted cast-on." Not something I've ever done before, but this video made it easy to learn to do the first time
Marly, I have your classes even on Craftsy. I would love for you to do a video on the ins and outs of double pointed needles. I would like to knit gloves and mittens but I am lost with dpns.
I would say follow the pattern you are using and if it doesn't specify a style of cast-on stitch then I would consider whatever style cast-on you chose to use as your cast-on row only and not the 1st row of knitting, so you'd start your first row of knitting after casting-on. In my experience this should always be the case - cast-on first, then knit.
@@strangeaslife Thanks so much. Started up knitting again just recently - haven't done it since high school. And that was a very long time ago!! Love the UA-cam lessons!
I tell you since watching videos I've learned I have knitted wrong for over 40 years. I wasn't taught to swivel the left needle and scoop ( you pull it up and plunk it on the left needle), I was also taught knit is counter clockwise and purl was clockwise. Is this known as any certain style Marly Bird???
#WHY is it important to "swivel & scoop"? I have done this kind of cast-on without that, so I would like to know your reason for doing it. 😄Really Curious!🙂
Tiffin Filion I don’t swivel and scoop and it comes out looking like knit, not purl. I’ll have to try this, a pattern I’m using called for it for adding stitch’s
Why do I end up with one needle having the tail and the other having the working yarn? No matter what method I use,, I don't end up with both the tail and the working yarn on the same needle to continue to join and work on., Can someone please help? TY
MaryEllen Jackson it sounds like maybe your casting on with one and then knitting with the other? Tie something to your tail after casting on so you don’t get them mixed up.
Find "some way" to maintain tension??! How to hold your yarn is important. I have ended up using the continental method because after crocheting for 50+ years, this is the way I maintain tension.

Thank you for using ginormous needles for this tutorial! It was super helpful to see exactly where the needles go in the yarn :-)
Excellent demo and description of how to cast on.

Thank you. You might enjoy the videos I’ve done with my mom.
Thank you so much! I was looking everywhere for a good way to cast on and this was the perfect video!
Thank you! I watched 3 other videos before I came across this one. So easy 🧶❤
You’re welcome 😊
great video. super helpful. a coworker of mine abandoned some needles and yarn so I've picked them up and this is getting me started :)))
Very helpful tutorial 🙂👍🏾 I as a long time crocheter decided to learn how to knit and this cast on way is my go to 💖🧶
I watched so many videos and yours was the only one that explained it well enough that I was about to actually follow along. Thank you!!!
I agree! Thank you for this tutorial!
I love this for me as a beginner. I also loved how you got right to the point! I’m gonna follow you. Thank you!

Thank you, Marly! Watched several videos, you made it simple. I was missing the twist when I scooped, made all the difference.
Glad it was helpful!

Hi Marly, finally getting myself to learn to knit ❤😊
Thank you for your quick reply! I am an absolute knitting beginner and am just now finding the confidence to try a pattern. Tension has been tricky for me. I will be 62 on May 15, so I guess it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks! Love this cast on!!

This is a wonderful instructional video! So easy to follow along with. Really helped me to nail this cast on I was struggling with
Your video is incredibly helpful. Nice and slow so I could follow. Thank you very much! I'm a fan!
Glad it helped!
That swivel & scoop makes all the difference! Thank you for being so clear!!
I am knitting first time
N this video helps me a lot
Thank you for the easy n clear teaching
Regards
Pearl Saket I don’t like this cast on at all. The long tail or twisted German is the way to go

Perfect! Just what I needed.
My mom taught me that way years ago and I could not for the life of me remember how to do it. Thanks for sharing.
Love this cast on method! Great for projects with a lot of stitches. No measuring, just need a tail!

I highly recommend taking a look at the Learn to Knit videos I did with my mom. “Marly and Marly’s Mom”.
The knitted cast on is I was taught. Excellent tutorial.😊
You're an excellent teacher! Thank you for creating your videos. I just started learning how to knit.
Thank you so much! This is awesome! Whenever I use the long tail cast on I either don’t have enough yarn or way too much. Never again. 👍🏻
I like it, How does this compare to the long tail cast on. I can see the knitted cast on as a yarn saver...as well as a time saver...no guessing..
Thank you for this tutorial. Usually I do the long tail but it usually takes me three tries - not enough yarn to finish the cast on, or too much yarn left after cast on. I need to cast on 150-200 cast ons so this cast on is perfect. Again, thank you for your tutorial. Barbara
I too have a hard time with the long tail. This technique is easier and far superior!!!
Thank you for this excellent detetioal

Very clear. Thankyou

great, glad I could help.
This is very helpful
Thanks! I like this method.
You're welcome!
Thank you. I really want to learn knitting.
great video!thanksss
That’s some Super-Mega, Chunky yarn!
Marly, I have your classes even on Craftsy. I would love for you to do a video on the ins and outs of double pointed needles. I would like to knit gloves and mittens but I am lost with dpns.
A B have you considered magic loop? I find it much more user friendly
Thank you. I learned something new.
My favorite cast on.
I don't have to measure out anything except a tail
What do you do after that? Total lost. I just have one line of that😭
once you have "Cast On" the right number of stitches for your project, you can begin knitting, following the pattern directions.
When you cast on this way, do you consider that as your first row of knitting? Or do you just start out your first row of knitting after the cast on?
I would say follow the pattern you are using and if it doesn't specify a style of cast-on stitch then I would consider whatever style cast-on you chose to use as your cast-on row only and not the 1st row of knitting, so you'd start your first row of knitting after casting-on. Thank you for your instruction. I’m a new subscriber/knitter. I’d love to see the pendent you’re wearing! Where did you purchase it?
By George I think I got it !!🧶
Okay, so is there a second video on how to do the second row with this method?
Pretty sure for the next row you just go to the knitting that's next in the pattern you're following.

What kind of yarn was that
Denise Contreras might be Red heart college I think, but maybe she will share soon.

#WHY is it important to "swivel & scoop"? I have done this kind of cast-on without that, so I would like to know your reason for doing it. 😄Really Curious!🙂
Heather McGuire I was wondering the same, I don't swivel and it turns out fine.
Tiffin Filion I don’t swivel and scoop and it comes out looking like knit, not purl. I’ll have to try this, a pattern I’m using called for it for adding stitch’s

MaryEllen Jackson it sounds like maybe your casting on with one and then knitting with the other? Tie something to your tail after casting on so you don’t get them mixed up.
Which is better: Knitted cast on, or Cable cast on, and why?
Amazing tks for sharing
Find "some way" to maintain tension??! How to hold your yarn is important. I have ended up using the continental method because after crocheting for 50+ years, this is the way I maintain tension.
I absolutely agree. Holding the yarn is very important to keep a good tension.
