Stop Jeep JK A-Pillar Leaks

  • Try this simple (and cheap!) fix to stop your Jeep Wrangler JK soft top from leaking where the door meets the A-pillar. I've had this in place for about two weeks now, and have even tested its effectiveness in some pretty powerful thunderstorms in North Texas -- and not one drop of water made it inside the Jeep!
    EDIT: A few commenters have suggested they "can't tell where this is" from the video. To clarify, you're looking at the leading edge of the soft top, where it meets the windshield header.

    2007 JK with this issue; I thought for sure the problem would be on the edge above the door since that's where the water was hitting, but this worked like a charm! Thanks so much!!!

      I’m glad it worked for you! I’ve found you have to replace the material every so often, especially if I’ve been going topless. I’d like to find a sturdier adhesive, but this gets the job done!

    information was helpful, but you stayed tight the entire time. Not sure if this area is above windshield or side window.

    This worked on my 2012 soft top JKU. I used weatherstrip I already had in the garage. Now it is quiet in the jeep too. Thanks

    Well we did have a good rain last night and the leak was still there. Same cup of water on the driver side and passenger floor pan. I guess where the water is actually coming in from the outside is a different issue than the one you had. I have to thank you again for putting up this video. I'm sure it has helped many and at least we'll try to put me in the right direction.

      James Bonanno I'm sorry it didn't work for you. Keep trying variations on this, as everything I've read suggests all these frontal leaks are the result of a poor seal along the windshield. Good luck!

    Too tight on the video.... we can't tell where you;ve put the foam.

    This is exactly what my problem was but I have no clue where you're putting that tape

    • @SmokeytheJeep
      @SmokeytheJeep  6 років тому +2

      Sorry, I'd no idea this was going to be so difficult for folks to discern. The foam is applied to the leading inside edge of the soft top where it makes contact with the rubber windshield seal. One piece goes along each side and one in the middle.

    When you do an install video you should show every step of the install. Way to lose everybody between the tape in your hand and the tape already on the Jeep.

    I can attest to this - I do this annually. Just hold onto the roll of foam seal, takes about two minutes to do each year. Faster than getting a car wash.

      I have to change it every time I drop the top; our area’s high winds end up shifting the pieces around. Still, a roll or two of the material at $4 a year (was $2.xx prior to the current inflation), it’s a cheap, easy fix!

    Okay I gave this a shot. I already had some campers tape there, but only a couple inches long I noticed yours are longer at each end and you have a 5-inch piece in the middle. I mimicked exactly what you did. Hopefully this does help. My leaks are in the same location as yours and when I finally gave up and brought it to the Jeep dealership they wanted $540 to fix a leak on the driver side and passenger side. That is absolutely insane. I will keep you posted.

      James Bonanno As time has gone on, I've realized two important takeaways: First, the adhesive on the foam won't withstand prolonged top-down driving, so be prepared to replace it if you drop the top often. Second, I've experimented with different lengths and additional pieces. Less is definitely more. Adding much more than is shown here will actually increase the leakage.
      I look forward to hearing your results!

      Smokey the Jeep that was some good advice and one point you brought up is something I will need to heed. I understand that I will have to replace the campers tape from just normal weather wear and the like. The top down it's something I do often, but I found myself adding more strips than you actually had in place thinking that would tighten the seal even more. After reading what you said I think I'm going to pull one of those strips off. Thanks again for the timely response and the genuine concern that a fellow jeepers will be able to deal with this situation.

    Did you put the foam seal right above the door under the soft top on the channel where the top sits?

    • @SmokeytheJeep
      @SmokeytheJeep  3 роки тому

      The foam is along the leading edge of the soft top, where the soft top meets the windshield.

    • @ryansawyers6002

      And it goes down the top of the door

    This works well for a few months before it starts leaking again. Did this to mine in September last yeah and it was leaking again by the end of December into January.
    Not really an permanent fix, I think a new channel would be better but I haven't tried it yet.

      jesse77wilson Thanks for sharing this. Frankly, I think the junction between the soft top and the windshield is a poor design. But, even if this is only a temporary fix, it's cheap enough to be worth it!
      Thanks again!
