Smokey the Jeep

For some, it’s climbing Mount Everest, pushing their bodies and equipment beyond the limit of physical endurance. For others, it’s experiencing the thrill of luxurious living, swimming in a sea of caviar and roses, with servants to handle every need. My life’s dream, however, was far simpler: I’ve wanted to own a Jeep.
There’s something about the vehicle that helped win a war, that conquered the Rubicon (and continues to do so with great regularity), that has captured the imagination of generations across the globe. Whatever they’re called - CJ or Wrangler, in YJ, TJ, LJ or JK flavors - the short-wheelbase Jeeps embody a uniquely American spirit.

After installing my dual-beam Rigid D2 Duallys, it was time for a little off-road test along the Canadian River north of Amarillo, Texas. The aim was still a bit off, but the light output on high, anyway is impressive. In the video, I start with the Rigids' low beams. Wait for the highs it's worth it.

Thanks tor this vid! Been skiing red river for a few years now and wanted to know the roots of the towns history
I appreciate the kind words. Red River has been a regular getaway of ours since the trip documented here.
Wow this dude is an idiot. How on Earth are we supposed to see where you put the foam??? Wtf
Wow. Tough crowd here at the end. Guy tried to help and gets a big kick in the…… Can’t hear…. Can’t tell where… Next time…. Lmao
I can attest to this - I do this annually. Just hold onto the roll of foam seal, takes about two minutes to do each year. Faster than getting a car wash.
I have to change it every time I drop the top; our area’s high winds end up shifting the pieces around. Still, a roll or two of the material at $4 a year (was $2.xx prior to the current inflation), it’s a cheap, easy fix!
😻 ρгό𝔪σŞm
2007 JK with this issue; I thought for sure the problem would be on the edge above the door since that's where the water was hitting, but this worked like a charm! Thanks so much!!!
I’m glad it worked for you! I’ve found you have to replace the material every so often, especially if I’ve been going topless. I’d like to find a sturdier adhesive, but this gets the job done!
When you do an install video you should show every step of the install. Way to lose everybody between the tape in your hand and the tape already on the Jeep.
Did you put the foam seal right above the door under the soft top on the channel where the top sits?
The foam is along the leading edge of the soft top, where the soft top meets the windshield.
And it goes down the top of the door
"Financial Mistake" 😂😂😂
Can’t even tell where u put it it zoom out and show
Your too close
What sunshade are you using?
Isaiah Reb Spiderweb Shade. I forget what they call the model, but it’s the longer of their two JK designs. Thanks for checking out the video!
Smokey the Jeep I thought that looks familiar. I am a new Jeep owner and installed that a couple weeks ago. Thanks for putting up this video!
Isaiah Reb Congrats on your purchase, and welcome to the most fun, maddening, thrilling, frustrating, addicting hobby/lifestyle you could ever want!
Smokey the Jeep Thanks! So far I have enjoyed working through all the joys of Jeeping! I have subscribed and will keep tuning in.
Isaiah Reb I appreciate it. Reach out if you ever have any questions!
looks so fun!!!
Awesome trails. I know where I'm going.
BrianScott2112 It really is beautiful. There’s not really any technical wheeling, but it’s a great place to take in the mountain air and enjoy the scenery. We’re hoping to go back next summer.
@@SmokeytheJeep any good places to camp on that trail?
@@goldenbanjo197 I honestly don’t recall. I know there’s plenty of camping locations around the area, but I don’t recall there being anything on/along the trails themselves.
Drop the music. We CANNOT hear you.
Thank you! Just fyi, music is almost louder than your voice. Next DIY, no music would work. Jeep on!
So you bought a total of three sets, for 12 modules total? These are the little 2 LED per module ones? Heh, I just bought three of those ones from amazon. I was hoping the three sets would give me a bit more brightness.
Yes, that's correct. I've since added a contrasting blue module in each fender well and four behind the grill. The blues behind the grille don't serve much purpose, but they all look cool. In all seriousness, the light output is quite sufficient for night-wheeling. A few of my friends run Lux lights. And, while there's are a little brighter, the difference isn't as much as you might think. Considering they paid anywhere from $100 to $400 for their lights, and the white units here were less than $50, including a cheap wireless switch, I'm happy with the outcome. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Well, my purposes are for underglow on a sedan that rides much, much lower to the ground. Do you think the light output from three sets of these will be enough for that purpose?
@@phyrexiannewborn7104 Three sets, so six modules? That should be enough for the sides, yes. I'd add another couple of sets for the front and rear, depending on the overall size of your vehicle. (If the car is short, you might get away with two per side and have one each for the front and rear.)
Naw, the product I got was this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IB03C1K/ There are actually four pods per set, so a total of 12. Are these the same style as the ones you have?
Phyrexian Newborn Looks like it
Hey man I have these same dual high /low lights , I’m just stuck in what goes where in the switch. Can’t get them to work. ?any help ?
Joel Lopez No problem. Let me refresh my own memory, and I’ll get back to you ASAP. 👍🏻
Awesome thank you man ,Hope to hear from you soon ,

ha. Keep on Rolling on!
Curious where this picks up... is this the last leg starting from Anchor mine or from the back side from Midnight Meadow? I just attempted to run the trail from the right turn just out of Red River in a stock Cherokee Trailhawk and that first mile was not a dirt road, it was for experienced wheelers only about 1.5 miles in I opted to return and take the long way around.... wrong trail???
I suspect you were in the right place. It did seem like the start of the trail was paved for quite a ways. I wouldn't have described it as for experienced wheelers only, though. There was nothing technical or beyond a stock rig's capabilities. At the time I filmed this, I was running a 1.5-inch leveling kit and OEM 32" BFGs. We also had a stock TJ with us that was lower than I. Other than the water hole you see in the video, there was nothing to pose any obstacle to a stock Jeep.
Going to have to give it another shot after winter.... That tril I took was just a tad wider than the vehicle and all rocks.... did fine crawling over 24" rocks :) only others on the trail were a couple ATVs. Will stay longer and do Goose as well.
Wow really neat. Didn't even know they did such a thing. Not too far from us either.
Bubbas Garage Vlogs It’s well worth the time. I’ve since seen them hold similar events other times of the year.
haha It must be TEXAS lol
We just bought the Rough Country switch pod, I wanted to install it first, before i do the bumpers and fog lights and what not on my jeep, I love the grommet idea and switch you installed that is a good idea. PS, I will be doing a video on the switch pod we received. I went to do the install last weekend but they shorted me the bracket that actually holds the switches so I didn't get to install it, waiting for it to come in the mail now and maybe get it in in the next two weeks or so, but busy so probably three weeks out now since they shorted me the bracket, anyhow, looking forward to it. I can honestly say I wish I had bought the s-pod at this point, I am sure as much as they cost they would have sent me all the parts to install it. but we shall see the cheaper rugged ridge one may well work out just fine. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week. Dale
Heartland Dual Sport I’m sure it will work out, but I know how it is to wait on parts! I’m not a fan of sPod, but there are lots of good companies out there. I’m fond of the Painless Trail Rocker and the Switch Pros, but those can be pricey. The Rough Country MLC-6 has a price point that’s REALLY tempting. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video sir, cant wait to see them on the Jeep. Thanks for sharing, congrats and merry christmas sir. Dale
Excellent intro my friend, Found you from a comment on NBR's channel, we are new to the Jeep club and having fun with ours.. Keep up the fun videos. liked, subbed and looking forward to seeing more from your channel. Dale
Thank you, Dale. I appreciate your kind words and sub! See you on the trails!
I guarantee you'd have more tread left if you kept higher psi..... ijs
Dash 1 That may be, but with the Jeep’s low weight, I’d be in the market for new kidneys. 😄 Thanks for watching/commenting!
I bought the exact same kit. Haven't installed them yet but I did hook them up to a Battery, all I can say is that they have an amazing light output for such a small package. You won't be Disappointed!!! Kitty Approved too!! LOL Cheers!!!
cpotter1565 Agreed, they’re great! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Thanks for the unboxing. Considering replacing my Sierra's stock OEM fogs with these as the fogs are on their way out, and it'd be nice to essentially get two types of light in a single housing. Your video seems to be the only place to see what the Rigid connector looks like, which helps my planning. Have you installed your set yet? If so, how are you liking them? (Cute cat, btw!)
Evan McCausland Thanks, I’m glad this helps you. I’ve posted an install video, and there’s a more detailed install write-up at my blog. (The link is on my channel page.) I’ve only tested them once. That video should be up tonight. Put simply, I love the light output, just have to get the aiming right. Thanks again for watching!
This video was done very well and mirrors the type of experiences I've had with my Wrangler DuraTrac. Mine were installed on a 2014 Jeep they now have 56383 miles on them and still measure 10/32" of tread depth, which is absolutely amazing. They do great in mud environments and off road in general. You're right they are quieter on the highway, because they are a Hybrid tire. As far as snow goes again they get an A rating from me. I will be upgrading mine to a larger size in the near future mine are only 32.1 in. 255 75R17. Thanks again for the info.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m still very fond of mine. I anticipate getting at least another two years out of mine.
Great unboxing and awesome lights! I use KC HiLites LZR's, but these Rigids are awesome as well!
Rocky X TV Thanks. I looked hard at the round KC LZRs, but I didn’t get all the info I wanted from KC, and I found these for essentially HALF PRICE from Rigid. I figured that was a great use of the money I was gifted for lights!
I just saw the price of these Rigids, that is a great deal on a set of Hi/Lo D2's. Great buy man!
Love it! Thanks for sharing this event with us!
Baa Baa Black Jeep We had a blast! Can’t make the expo in March (Gonna be there earlier that week - so close!), but look forward to getting down there for more Jeeping fun soon.
March is the Expo - We'll probably do our regular laps again around July 15th as in years past.
Sounds good. We’re in the area every few months for other business, and it’s hard to make time for extra visits. Hopefully, something will work out this year. You guys have a larger and more active Jeep community than we do in the Panhandle. It’s fun to join in on events when we can.
Tire in E rating is still 2 ply. I have a set I just Purchased with 3816 date code and it says 2ply polyester
Well we did have a good rain last night and the leak was still there. Same cup of water on the driver side and passenger floor pan. I guess where the water is actually coming in from the outside is a different issue than the one you had. I have to thank you again for putting up this video. I'm sure it has helped many and at least we'll try to put me in the right direction.
James Bonanno I'm sorry it didn't work for you. Keep trying variations on this, as everything I've read suggests all these frontal leaks are the result of a poor seal along the windshield. Good luck!
Smokey the Jeep no problem my friend I'll figure it out. Just another minor life challenge. By the way I've subscribed to your Channel. Stay safe on the trails
James Bonanno I appreciate it; keep it shiny-side up, my friend!
Okay I gave this a shot. I already had some campers tape there, but only a couple inches long I noticed yours are longer at each end and you have a 5-inch piece in the middle. I mimicked exactly what you did. Hopefully this does help. My leaks are in the same location as yours and when I finally gave up and brought it to the Jeep dealership they wanted $540 to fix a leak on the driver side and passenger side. That is absolutely insane. I will keep you posted.
James Bonanno As time has gone on, I've realized two important takeaways: First, the adhesive on the foam won't withstand prolonged top-down driving, so be prepared to replace it if you drop the top often. Second, I've experimented with different lengths and additional pieces. Less is definitely more. Adding much more than is shown here will actually increase the leakage. I look forward to hearing your results!
Smokey the Jeep that was some good advice and one point you brought up is something I will need to heed. I understand that I will have to replace the campers tape from just normal weather wear and the like. The top down it's something I do often, but I found myself adding more strips than you actually had in place thinking that would tighten the seal even more. After reading what you said I think I'm going to pull one of those strips off. Thanks again for the timely response and the genuine concern that a fellow jeepers will be able to deal with this situation.
This worked on my 2012 soft top JKU. I used weatherstrip I already had in the garage. Now it is quiet in the jeep too. Thanks
I'm glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
This is exactly what my problem was but I have no clue where you're putting that tape
Sorry, I'd no idea this was going to be so difficult for folks to discern. The foam is applied to the leading inside edge of the soft top where it makes contact with the rubber windshield seal. One piece goes along each side and one in the middle.
Too tight on the video.... we can't tell where you;ve put the foam.
Smokey is the panhandle jeep coalition still together?
mitch jones Yes, it's still going strong.
thanks. I just recently got my first jeep and am new to offroading. looking at trying to join a club.
I'm guessing Facebook to learn about get togethers?
Yes. It's a secret group on Facebook. We had some drama with another group, and they decided that was the easiest way to end it. Reach out to Don Hibbs on Facebook; he can add you. PJC is probably the most family-friendly group in the area. It doesn't wheel as often as some others, but it's all good people. Black Sheep Off-Road is another good one, albeit a bit more salty. 😉 Jeeps Exclusive is the most organized group here, but it's a little hard to justify paying to wheel (private land) when the river is free.
thanks Smokey.
I see that you do a lot of off-roading in Texas, if you don't mind me asking where are you located
It's no problem at all. We're in Amarillo. The folks we wheel with usually wheel at either the Canadian River, about 25 to 30 miles north of town; Buzzard Canyon near Sayre, Oklahoma; or around Red River, N.M., about 4 hours northwest of us. What about you?
Smokey the Jeep I live in weatherford Texas, I'm just trying to see if there was any trails around here but seems you're a little to far out for me to ask. I loved those red river trails you posted.
Thanks. Red River is a fun place to wheel. There's nothing technical there, but it's a good place for some relaxing and scenic trail rides. You might also look into Hidden Falls Adventure Park, as I think it's closer to you. I've not been there yet, but I have a friend from that area who loves it. They have good wheeling and some camping options as well.
information was helpful, but you stayed tight the entire time. Not sure if this area is above windshield or side window.
This works well for a few months before it starts leaking again. Did this to mine in September last yeah and it was leaking again by the end of December into January. Not really an permanent fix, I think a new channel would be better but I haven't tried it yet.
jesse77wilson Thanks for sharing this. Frankly, I think the junction between the soft top and the windshield is a poor design. But, even if this is only a temporary fix, it's cheap enough to be worth it! Thanks again!
That's true,
Looks like a pretty tough rig!
Rocky X TV Yeah, he's got an amazing amount of suspension travel. Of course, the driver is pretty fearless, too, LOL!
What rims did you use? What size and off set are the rims?
They're 17 x 8.5" Level 8 Trackers. The offset is -6 mm, with 4.5 inches of backspacing.
Hey where is the trailhead located?
Sorry for the delay in response, Destiny. The trailhead is behind the Auslander/Black Diamond grill. If you turn onto Pioneer Road from West Main Street, you'll come to a gravel parking lot to the right just after the Black Diamond. Turn right into this parking lot to stage, and the trail is basically in front of you past the dumpsters!
Great video! Looked like some kind of African safari scene at the beginning.
This kit is great! I paired it with the front big brake kit, slotted all the way around. Great video!
Rocky X TV Thanks. I agree. I'm planning to add the front big-rotor kit, likely early this summer. Thanks for watching! I'm enjoying watching your build videos. The one on the KC Gravity Pros was enlightening! 👍🏻
Smokey the Jeep Thanks! I just got a set of the regular KC Gravity headlights today, should have a video of them soon!
Rocky X TV Cool, I look forward to it!
Question- is it possible to remove the light while you have the brow on? It's just I have a winch on and can't remove the grill. So I wonder by putting this on, does it restrict removal of the light or access to the screws etc ?
The light brow does partially cover the headlights, but you'd have to remove the grille to access the headlights even without the light brow. There are four screws holding in the headlight retaining rings. At best, I think you'd only be able to access one of them without at least partially removing the grille. I have seen people running winches remove just the six plastic clips on the top of the grille and then lean it out to access the headlights. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching/commenting!
Not at all! With the possible exception of Fourth of July Trail, none of the trails in Red River are technically challenging. Some, like Greenie Peak and Goose Lake, have very steep drops. But wouldn't hesitate taking a stock JK or JKU on anything there. There are a couple of local places that rent out stock TJs. 👍🏻
Is there anything a stock jku couldn't handle going up to the peak?
Can u put link to where u bought these at
Sure. The seller lists them as several different things, and at different prices, but it's the same part number. m.ebay.com/itm/251548428332
