    With RED cameras, increasing ISO in camera allocates more stops of dynamic range to the highlights while also increasing noise, whereas reducing ISO in camera allocates more stops of dynamic range to the shadows. Additionally, underexposing and recovering shadows in post is not testing dynamic range, but exposure lattitude. The traffic lights tell us if the highlights are being clipped.

    This is one of the many reasons film directors prefer shooting on film vs digital, because even though film has around 14 stop of dynamic range, it allocates most of it in the highlights. Kodak 5219 has 9.5 stops above middle gray. This is why film is making a comeback in Hollywood, with over half of the Oscar winners shooting on film

    The C500 mk2 is one of the best for being able to grade to the Alexa LF! It’s a great camera, but so is Red and I love the Monstro, but it’s work! I like the Sony Venice too and I’ve used the C700 options, including global shutter. I’m looking forward to working with Komodo more.

    Very interesting and I'm learning a lot about these high end cine cams. I love these series!! I think the lighting conditions is absolutely mad ; ) and I would try as hard as possible to avoid it. ( I photograph mostly.) But there are lighting situations that I have ran into similar to this and yes trying to lift up after exposing for highlight cause color shifts. If skin tone is not present one can get by but when there are skin present all cameras struggle after lifting the mid and shadows a lot. And when exporting to lower resolution one might think it will be less obvious but its actually contrary. The shadow side of the face will get strong noice and color shift and that will get enhanced when downscaling. It will look blotchy at the end result/smaller resolution and impossible to deal with. The Komodo looks fantastic, the highlight roll off is just candy to my eyes, I almost start to want it...

    I’m struggling building the concept of the VR Rigs, but this is a major budget project. Komodo smaller, but by the time I kit them out not as much. The RAW is a big draw because of the complexity of 5-6 cameras synced in the VR platform. If I could get RAW out to record from C-70, I’d defiantly go that route.

    The 16+ stops of dynamic range doesn’t make any sense because you physically can not store more than 16 stops of light with a 16 bit ADC. It’s impossible. The 16th stop below 65535 is literally code values from 1 to 0

    At 4:35 sec was the outside area clipped? It didn't look like it. You also didn't grade that footage down to match the at 7:38 sec. Why not? Also, adjusting ISO on the Komodo moves dynamic range stops to the right or left meaning to the highlights or to the shadows. It doesn't work like other cameras. That's in the Komodo user guide. It also looks like the footage at 7:38 has a different f/Stop . The first clip looks sunny because of the window exposure and the other looks like a different day and dark. I don't think either ones is graded properly. What did the stop signs give you?

  • @albertcurielx

    Not sure why you turned off the comments on the a7siii video, but I highly recommend doing a over/under test like CVP, with a light meter, in a controlled setting, that isn't changing due to weather and time of day. That's the only way of comparing these cameras, and as it is, CVP is getting different results comparing the Komodo and the a7siii. Hell, even CineD is getting different results, especially in highlights. Actually working with Komodo, I can say the DR was terrible, and is a huge reason why I canceled my preorder. But I wouldn't buy a a7siii either.

    • @carlosq00
      @carlosq00  3 роки тому

      Alright here goes my answer. The vast majority of people who watch my videos aren't subscribed to my channel. They don't follow me on any social channel and don't really contribute to the community that we are building here. So they didn't understand that there was a complete series that had been shot and produced going through multiple weeks of actual shooting scenarios. The first set of episodes was to establish a foundation and throughout the series to identify how to get the most out of each camera...none of that matters though, because again, they like most people don't follow the channel and all had the "I want it NOW" version of the series. So I canceled it and rather than reading stupid comments that came from the lack of understanding on what we were trying to do with the series and share with the community that actually cares enough to support the channel...I decided to save myself the negativity and extra "FREE" production covering topics that really only matter if someone wants to invest in themselves and give back to this community. So if few people care, why should I. I already own the cameras and I already got my workflows sorted. I can get everything that I need out of my camera lineup the rest is just noise. I thought I was going to help people and as it turned out the Trolls showed up and it didn't really help me gain audiences that want to be part of this community. So I'm not going to invest any more time in tasks that apparently only matter to me.

    This is funny seeing a couple of years down the road, Red Komodo does not have 16+ stops of anything at any point in any shooting scenario. It has 12,2 stops at a noise ratio 2 which is pretty good for a super 35/apsc camera with a global shutter. But of course nothing compared to the Alexa 35 (which is much more expensive). But it's important for anyone to realize it's nowhere close to 16+ stops if dynamic range is important for your shoots, like run and gun documentaries etc. At that point a mirrorless full frame camera with good ibis (and autofocus for those who are accustomed to that) might be the better choice. The Alexa which is the best camera available on the marked is 15,2 stops at noise ratio 2. The Alexa is not a cheater camera and has no inbuilt noise reduction so no matter if you shoot pro-res or raw the result is the same. Much cheaper mirrorless cameras can match the Komodo easily for dynamic range (but not for how much you can push the image in RAW, which means you will be able to get more accurate colors with the Komodo in RAW than the mirrorless cameras no matter if you use Prores RAW or similar with those) So keep all of this in mind depending on your workflow. If you only do rudimentary color grading for weddings and similar shoots a mirrorless camera might be a much cheaper and better option but if you plan on doing advanced color grading for film quality shoots you might want to pay up the extra bucks for RED (etc)

But we also used the OG Komodo and recently the also the Komodo X which is quite something with the new framerates. We always love your input and testing! What happend to lighting? Isn’t that the magic that makes a good image perfect in the end?
    A shot is only as great as the location is. If you have bad light conditions, a camera won‘t make a nice image. no matter what it can do with DR or how the „lowlight“ is.
    Shaping your shot by manipulating the environment, changing angles, changing or directing light will always be the goal for a good image.
    You will never get a better looking headshot infront of a window than with lights. No matter which camera you use.
